Russell Wilson steps up in fourth quarter, Seahawks stun Patriots

Kyle Arrington, Doug Baldwin AP

Midway through the fourth quarter on Sunday in Seattle, the Patriots had a 23-10 lead. That wasn’t enough to stop Seahawks rookie quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wilson, who is quickly developing a reputation as a quarterback who plays his best when it matters most, threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes as the Seahawks won 24-23. Overall Wilson went 16-for-27 for 293 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw a career-high 58 passes, completing 36 of them for 395 yards and two touchdowns. But he also had two interceptions and two costly intentional grounding penalties, and the Seahawks’ defense did a fairly good job against the fast-paced New England offense. Patriots receiver Brandon Lloyd made an amazing diving catch that could have set the Patriots up for a last-second game-winning field goal, but Lloyd came down out of bounds — and came down hard on his shoulder, apparently injured.

The win improves the Seahawks to 4-2 in the very competitive NFC West, while the Patriots fall to 3-3 and in a four-way tie with the entire AFC East. The Seahawks and the Patriots are both in the middle of some pretty crazy division races, which is fitting, as they just played a crazy game.

That’s an impressive win, I don’t care what your favorite team is… Nice job Seattle, great job Wilson.

Poor Matt Flynn has to sit on the bench as Wilson shines.

The Pats secondary looked pretty awful throughout the game. Usually Brady is able to mask those defensive issues but even he was missing a lot of throws today

  4. themackstrong says: Oct 14, 2012 7:23 PM

We watched the improvement last week and now a breakout game. The Pats D took out Lynch but did Wilson throw a good game. Defense kept the Hawks in the game with those 2 picks of Brady. Go Hawks!

The New England defense has not made a game winning stop in a close game in years. It’s terrible. Brady played terrible in the red zone and game management by the coaches was awful. Kudos to Seattle, good comeback.

“Wilson, who is quickly developing a reputation as a quarterback who plays his best when it matters most, threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes as the Seahawks won 24-23.”

This kid has an uncanny ability to make in-game adjustments to keep defenses off balance.

    GO HAWKS!!

You aren’t going to win too many games when you have nearly 60 pass attempts.

Just a pathetic display by the New England secondary. They made Wilson look like a top 3 QB.

Again, they have trouble closing out a team. Teams seem to go on 4th quarter runs on my team far to often.

Two turnovers in the redone, which include the gaffe at the end of the half.

Brady played poorly. He looked fatigued with so many pass attempts.

This defense is bi-polar. They need to find an identity real quick.

Not to worry my friends, we still will endure an entire week of, “Well, despite their 3-3 record, this could be the best Pats team we’ve seen in years.” Rodney Harrison will be leading the charge.

  19. patsfan22 says: Oct 14, 2012 7:33 PM

This is not a superbowl team. The pats may get back to the superbowl but they will not win another superbowl until well after Brady retires. I don’t know who coaches the secondary but he cannot teach them even teach them the basics. This team looks good but when it really matters they fail, 3 losses by a total of 4 points is proof of that.

I’ll continue supporting and watching every week but this game is really confirmation of what I’ve suspected for a while. We were so lucky to get to the superbowl last year with the dropped pass in the endzone and missed field goal by cundiff.

  21. oreo51 says: Oct 14, 2012 7:33 PM

If Hernandez is having trouble on a wet field don’t have him play this week. The Patriots offense can and will operate fine without him. Besides the Patriots don’t need anybody slowing down what has been the best bad weather (rain, sleet, snow, wind etc.) quarterback that most of us has ever seen Tom Brady.

    ==================================

Have you seen that Seattle defense? I don’t think the Patriots offense will be fine this week.

    ==================================

Ho hum they are still the Seahawks. Last time I checked they were in last place in their division and thats with the win the replacement officials gave them.

The Patriots defense broke me today. If Matt Patricia and Josh Boyer still have jobs tomorrow that will be a shame. That is the single worse schemed defense ever, it is an embarrasment. But belichick will still give his stupid “gotta coach it better and play it better” nonsense we always get following yet another humiliating loss. Wake up Bob Kraft.

  26. ynot1381 says: Oct 14, 2012 7:36 PM

  27. folkcrusader says: Oct 14, 2012 7:37 PM

I’m a Seahawk fan since ’76. We think we have a pretty good team so it was great to see the ‘hawks play one of the best in the Pat’s. Hat’s off to Brady, he was everything he seems to be. I thought he may have tired a bit but 60 passes could do that. Wilson should get the home town haters off his back for at least a week.

  34. sarkent says: Oct 14, 2012 7:43 PM

Wilson has looked good the last two weeks, but against pretty poor pass defenses. Now the Seahawks have to travel to San Francisco for a Thursday night matchup against a team with a defense as good as or better then their own and an offense that is definately better on the whole.

    Another challenge.

  35. patsfiend says: Oct 14, 2012 7:47 PM

I don’t know where to start. They almost got Welker killed. You’d think they never played in the rain before. Brady was missing throws. Receivers were dropping catches. Lloyd looks to me to be out for a long time with that shoulder.

Red zone turnovers. Terrible clock management. How do they NOT kick that field goal at the end of the half?

And the secondary… are you kidding me? How many heaves downfield did they give up? The PI calls were atrocious (and deserved.) Didn’t Wilson just complete the 3 or 4 longest passes of his career in that game?

    Pats deserved to lose, absolutely.

Congrats Hawks on forcing Pats to have their ugliest turd of a game I’ve seen in a while. Good win by you.

  37. rushmatic says: Oct 14, 2012 7:48 PM

Seems to me that Belichick is typically able to punctuate strengths to hide weaknesses pretty well. I hope the weaknesses shown in our defensive front/secondary today are punctuated in practice.

Every time Wilson stepped into a throw down field, I was counting it a catch toward the end. That’s scary.

    Great job today, Seahawks.

Sorry, who’s obnoxious? Oh right, it’s fans of the other 3 AFC East teams that after 11 yrs of beatings, still spend their lives in their mother’s basement waiting for the Pats to fall. Still not gonna happen. Sorry, didn’t see one post mocking other teams in the division. Till now. They’re not behind anyone either. Pats lost a game(deservedly so) against a good team, that’s very tough to beat at home. Could say they gave it away, or just didn’t make enough plays. Still, WAAYY better than the rest of the division.

How bitter and little you are! Here’s the excuse: That Pats secondary stunk today, and the Pats O did a lousy job managing the clock (again.)

And, technically, with only one conference loss and a great point differential, the Pats are just fine in the division as long as they take care of the Yets next week, you cow muffin.

  44. andrewproughcfe says: Oct 14, 2012 7:52 PM

I have trouble seeing how a team with no defense, with only three wins against teams with winning records in the past two seasons, can be “stunned” to lose on the road to a tough team like Seattle.

What would be “stunning” would be if Belichick won a Super Bowl without cheating, or beat a team from New York in the playoffs, or didn’t reflexively bend over for his spanking when Tom Couglin came to town.

    @randallflagg52:

Pats had 475 yrds of offense against this vaunted D. Yes they lost, but you got nuthin’. phoff12 was right. 23-10 with 10 mins left, despite 2 stupid turnovers and a grounding call on Brady, costing 3 points. Gave it away/2ndary is just not good enough.

  49. yojoeyl says: Oct 14, 2012 8:01 PM

I just find it so hard to understand how a so called great quarterback can’t throw a pass when he really needs to. The Patriots could have put this game away but their so called great offense just couldn’t move the ball when it mattered most. The Seahawks are just another team to pick on their weaknesses, inconsistant play, fourth quarter chokes, and a pass defense like nobody elses 3 years and running. Congrats to the Seahawks for beating them with 30 less plays.

As a Seahawks fan, you can’t get the grin off my face with a crowbar right now. We got rid of Tavaris Jackson and added a kid who threw two TDs to beat Tom Brady. A defense that gave up a lot of yards made plays and came up big when they had to. Last two Patriot drives were three and out and turnover on downs in four plays.

An amazing win, but not much time to enjoy it. Suddenly HUGE game against the Niners this Thursday…gonna be a good one, if you like hard-hitting defense.

That’s the point, you started the hating. The Pats are perennial contenders for the SB and win the division every year. I don’t care if you have nostalgia for JKiick and LCzonka from before I was born. So, what if the Pats haven’t won a SB since 2004, they contend for it every year, while the dolphins organization wallows in ineptitude and misery. There is no shame in going to 2SBs since and losing in the last 2 mins. 30 other teams wish. I laugh at people that say Pats haven’t won anything since 2004. If all you have is rooting against the Pats, because your team has no hope, I feel sorry for you. I had season tickets for the Pats during the 1-15 RRust days. I didn’t spend my time rooting against the class teams and winning organizations(buffalo at the time), I admired them.

    TO PAT’S FANS:

As a Seahawk fan I can tell you your offense is very good. No one has done that to Seattle this year, and our losses where mostly based on our passing game being “in development”.

I am just saying I wouldn’t worry too much, since you guys did something no other team did – pass for nearly 400 yards.

  67. juliusanonymous says: Oct 14, 2012 10:49 PM

I’m a Seahawks fan, and I think people need to stop hating on the Patriots and their fans. That was the best offense we’ve faced all year and their defense is vastly underrated. They are REALLY good. Seahawk fans were so jacked up because we just played the best team we’ve played all year. They’re going to make a lot of noise and they should be SuperBowl contenders again. I’m glad they’re in the AFC and not our division, so we don’t have to play them again. DARN GOOD team.

And I was at the game. Pats fans were all class. Literally the best group of fans I’ve seen at the Clink. I’ve never been congratulated for a Seahawk win by so many opposing fans. Every one of them was knowledgeable and not a single drunk jerk in the crowd.

Good luck, Pats. I’ll be rooting for you in the AFC. Thanks for an amazing game, and thanks for being such awesome guests! You’re always welcome at the Clink!!

Brady did the best Mark Sanchez impression I’ve ever seen.

Balls were thrown at receiver’s feet, over their heads, out of bounds, and places on the field where there were only ghosts.

    He was TERRIBLE.

The running game just never got on track, and that defense is Jeckell and Hyde.

I’m going to reluctantly give credit to Pete Carroll and the Seahawks, they outplayed and outcoached New England today in that second half.

  69. backindasaddle says: Oct 15, 2012 12:05 AM

The Pats defensive secondary is a liability and just throwing the ball down field exposes it. They either give up the catch with poor coverage or they commit pass interference and gift the opposition with a big gain. This is why they lost today.

  70. nodindenver says: Oct 15, 2012 12:07 AM

Not only did the Hawks beat the Pats but, they punished Welker and Brady repeatedly and that was enjoying to watch. In related news, the NFL is great to watch because nothing is what it seems week to week.

This Pats fan had posted earlier in the week that the Sea D was legit nasty and I felt the Pats had to stop the run AND be able to run to win. They did 1 out of two and that meant my team lost. BTW-DGCAZ— Remember that record that the Patriots were chasing a few years only to fall short of? Yeah, that’s a Dolphins record you hater.

Respect to the Miami franchise (maybe not to this years team… haha)

One thing I will say as a big time Patriot fan, when it comes to late game drives where I have to depend on my defense…

I have no confidence. The past few years has weathered my expectations.

Let’s not forget that Brady had two chances to seal the win, but the Seahawks defense was too much for him.
