Andy Reid offers tepid support for Vick, Castillo

Detroit Lions v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

After a second straight blown lead in the fourth quarter led to a second straight loss, you knew Eagles coach Andy Reid’s Monday press conference would be a spirited affair.

Reid said that the team would be evaluating everything during the bye week, but the two people that everyone wanted to know about were quarterback Michael Vick and defensive coordinator Juan Castillo. Vick turned the ball over twice on Sunday, upping his total to 13 on the season, and that led to a question to Reid about whether he remains committed to starting Vick at quarterback.

“Today, I am,” Reid said, via Tim McManus of PhillyMag.com.

We just went down this road of less than emphatic support for Vick a couple of weeks ago and there hasn’t been any change in the lineup or in Vick’s play. Making a move to rookie Nick Foles would be a drastic change of course for Reid and the Eagles, one that might not mean much positive given the way the offensive line is playing right now. That line and Vick were part of an offense that Reid referred to as “pathetic” in the fourth quarter, however, so changes could well be coming.

Castillo came under some fire from cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha after the game for changes to the team’s scheme late in the game, a charge that Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Reid disputed. He said that “as I’m standing here right now” Castillo would remain the team’s defensive play caller after they return from the bye, but also reiterated that they will be evaluating everything.

There’s much to evaluate for Reid because he knows these next 10 games will determine whether or not he still has his job come the new year.

Today I am? Either you are committed or not. Yeah I’m committed to my wife and kids, today. But not necessarily tomorrow. Are you in or are you out?

I’m out, says the logic center of Andy Reid’s brain. This guy is not only a bad football coach, but his lack of intelligence is further embarrassing to the team and quite rude.

He lost the game, now he’s digging a deeper hole. He can’t even speak appropriately let alone lead his team to glory.

Vick is terrible. Would make a nice High School QB at this point.

It would be difficult to have any credibility while giving a true endorsement to either and claiming youre trying your hardest to win.

This is what I don’t get about eagle fans. Years ago they were calling for Reids head for over working Brian Westbrook, and thus, shortening his career. Now that Reid is trying not to over use McCoy, the fans STILL want him to get a lot of touches.

    Can’t have it both ways.

Reid is not a bad coach, and usually elevates whichever QB is playing for him. Vick is, was and always will be a loss cause and a trap for whomever signs him.

Simple hiring of a proven effective defensive coordinator would fix everything. A Mike Nolan, Wade Phillips, Dom Capers type. Its proven history. This team did all its damage with Jim Johnson as coordinator. They’ve been mediocre at best ever since. No sacks in 3 games with this talent? Maybe a scheme issue?

  13. brokentreehousemusic says: Oct 15, 2012 2:51 PM

How can a vetern head coach blame anyone but himself for a blown lead in the 4th quarter? Come on, Andy, you’re usually good at the contrition routine.

Andy Reid is like the Captain in Titanic in that he is being given a chance to potentially get off the sinking ship, but decides to go down with it instead. Only difference is, the Captain was heroic and Reid is idiotic.

  15. freebird2011 says: Oct 15, 2012 2:54 PM

The Eagles were dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Defensive line–zero sacks and not much pressure on Stafford.

Offensive line–McCoy had 14 carries for 22 yards, Jackson 1 for -14, and Brown 5 carries for 4 yards, which outside of Vick’s scrambing, was 20 carries for 12 yards.

  16. baddegg says: Oct 15, 2012 2:55 PM

Soon we’ll hear the “fire Andy” chants that were so warranted last yeat.

The guy doesn’t have a clue…. Pull him from behind the facade you’ll see he’s a grade-A dummy, not witty & coy like most tend to believe. He deserves a role in the NFL “coaching” ranks, just not as a Head Coach, GM, or talent scout.

Can’t wait to see his fat butt kicked to the curb and Johnny Gumdrops come in and right this ship.

For those who want to fire Andy Reid.
Keep in mind during you rant…He has the 20th best winning percentage in the history of the game (.611 winning percentage- min 100 games) right next to Tom Landry and Bill Walsh.
He’s done it with multiple Qbs (McNabb, Garcia, Vick, even AJ Feeley) Going to the playoffs with them contributing.
    You don’t easily replace that.

Go ahead and fire him. He will be out of a job for less than a day.
A Ray Rhodes could easily await the Eagles.

  21. kscogg says: Oct 15, 2012 2:59 PM

Kind of confused by Eagles fans……the Vick love was on full display when they were winning games. “He is the best qb, most dynamic player…blah, blah blah.” Now that he is choking up his head, along with Reid’s, is on the chopping block? You can’t possibly believe the answer is Foles? For starters, he doesn’t play defense. The defense couldn’t stop that dying-on-the-vine Lions team at all in the fourth quarter. Second, what have you seen that would lead you to think he can come in a make all the difference? As much as I hate the Eagles they are all of 1 game out of first….the sky isn’t falling yet.

Coaches in the past were dismissed b/c the didn’t want anything to do with Vick and his lazy work ethics & inability to learn. Rather were forced to work with him as a starting QB because of the GM’s & Ownership.

Where as Reid has detached himself to Vick and will go down with him. That says all you need about Big Red’s brightness!!!!

  24. eaglesandravens says: Oct 15, 2012 3:10 PM

Anyone suggesting that we should’ve run the ball yesterday didn’t see the game. Our whole o-line was completely dominated. Now, that doesn’t mean Reid is excused from this loss because if our line was dominated, we should’ve just run screen passes, easing the pressure from the lions. As for the defense, nnamdi was doing well against calvin with help from our safety for the first 3 quarters, but for some reason in the 4th quarter, we started calling blitzes (because our dline was getting no pressure), leaving many one on one match ups against their receivers…..which led to those touchdowns (losing nate allen, our starting safety, in the 4th quarter didnt help matters either.) Although its easy to blame Vick for the loss, I would put most of it on the dline, oline, and the play calling on both sides.

  25. brenenostler says: Oct 15, 2012 3:19 PM

  26. prrbrr says: Oct 15, 2012 3:33 PM

They were lackluster, listless, and just terrible. Did anyone else figure out that the Dolphins and Skins are 3-3 with a rookie QB. The Oline almost single handily killed Vick. Namdi had it dead nuts, these 4th qtr shifts in D philosophy are killing them. Nandi shut Johnson down yesterday

“Go ahead and fire him. He will be out of a job for less than a day.”

Agreed. It might be time for him to move on. However, Philly should be under no illusion that the next guy will do any better. It’s not like Philly is a dream job or anything. Why would any coach who had actual options want to subject themselves to that volatile fan base?

  28. myeaglescantwin says: Oct 15, 2012 3:42 PM

    @h3min1230

you obviously havent been paying attention.
The Eagles have a ratio of 71-29 pass to run.

no team in america can survive like that. It makes a team on dimensional and does the job of the DC for them.

WE have 4 RB’s on the team. We are saying LeSean nees 30+ carries a game.. but the team needs 30+ carries a game.
especially with the way VIck has been playing.

  29. gdive says: Oct 15, 2012 3:44 PM

Reid screwed himself when chose not to get a competent veteran backup QB. We all know Nick Foles has good potential but he’s not ready to be thrown to the wolves yet especially with the less than stellar Eagles OL. In the words of the Charles Barkley…….”they’re turrible.” Reid really has no choice but to continue the course with Vick but he does need to run the ball more to get some balance and preserve Vick for the rest of the season.

  30. mjsweentraining says: Oct 15, 2012 3:45 PM

Pretty amazing that the first comment, “Run the damn ball, Andy!!” has 88 likes vs. 8 dislikes. I would agree with that sentiment sometimes, but yesterday was not one of those times as the Lions line made camp in the Eagles backfield… McCoy and Brown combined for 26 yards on 19 carries.

After 6 games, Vick and Castillo (and Andy) are who we thought they were… A talented team devoid of discipline and unable to crisply execute a play, much less a gameplan.

Vick, for a myriad of reasons that have been addressed time and time again, just can’t get it done. It’s easy to blame an awful offensive line for lack of protection/fumble issues, but Eli played behind arguably one of the worse lines last year yet won a Super Bowl. Time to go with Foles.

Castillo has alot of defensive talent, and for the most part, that talent and a simplified scheme has done an adequate, yet unremarkable, job. The main issue with Castillo is his inability to create or implement more sophisticated looks in the gameplan… As the game goes on, opposing offenses start to catch on to what works and what doesn’t.

Another problem is the special teams. They have not been special. Time to fire Bobby April.

If they decide to make a switch, now is the best time with the bye week coming up. Go with Foles, tell Castillo to become less passive and more aggressive, and fire April. Please.

Should be an interesting 2 weeks in the Philly area. Usually a good % of fans check out during the bye week, but this year there are no Phillies or Flyers chatter to divert our attention. Ironic that the Eagles usually loathe anyone in their spotlight, but right now they are probably praying for any diversion.

You have an offensive line coach serving as the defensive coordinator. How in the world have they not fixed that glaring defect? The offseason acquisitions in Demeco Ryans and Fletcher Cox fileld HUGE holes in defensive personnel.

Vick is also terrible this year. He’s averaging 3 turnovers a game. The Eagles’ ship is sinking fast.

  37. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Oct 15, 2012 4:06 PM

castillo’s scheme is completely lost. at least four or five times babin allowed the same bootleg to go past him; and each time the receiver had almost an empty half of the field. no adjustments and the play worked equally well in the 4th qtr.

same with andy and marty. after running the same play over left tackle and being pushed 3 yards into the backfield several times, they never adjusted.

unfortunately, vick cannot run a successful screen game. he has no touch and can’t anticipate. he is reactionary and throws flat balls that are batted down, uncatchable, or worse, just deflected into the middle of the field.. where they become fair game for the linebackers and safeties.

luckily this team has some talent, but unless andy shakes things up beyond his inclination as a plodder, i’m afraid they will continue to disappoint.

  38. mogogo1 says: Oct 15, 2012 4:18 PM

Bizarre that a team with Michael Vick–the greatest running QB of all time–would end up passing way too often, but that’s exactly what is going on.

They’re so pass-happy they came out on a 3rd and 1 Sunday in the shotgun. McCoy’s a great back, but not only is he under-utilized, but most of his carries come on stretch plays that are feast or famine–he either breaks them big or gets tackled for a loss when the defense penetrates the slow developing play.

Their offense simply doesn’t suit their personnel and I’m skeptical it could win you a championship even with ideal personnel as there’s always going to come a point when you need to pound it up inside and get some tough yards. They’re all finesse, all the time, and that just doesn’t work in football.

this is looking more and more like foles team next year. maybe trade vick for a mid to late pick and use the first few picks on o-lineman and rebuild. don’t seem to be going anywhere this season.

as for castillo…..will never understand how you fire mcdermott after his defense HELD on the last possession against aaron rodgers and the packers…..he had put you in a position to win and vick threw the INT meant for riley. castillo could be good….but like anyone else he needs some time to make mistakes to master his craft. was never going to happen overnight.

  41. bigbluenationdb says: Oct 15, 2012 4:29 PM

I have never been able to figure out why Reid has been so loyal to both Vick and McNabb. Neither have been more then an average NFL QB. Jim Johnson was the reason the Eagles were so dominated. Not Andy Reid and his garbage offense or QBs. To run the west coast offense Reid wants to run you need an accurate and smart QB. Something he has never had in Vick or McNABB.

  42. mungman69 says: Oct 15, 2012 4:34 PM

Andy got rid of several decent O linemen so when injuries show up he has no one to replace them. Plus, last years first round draft pick, Danny Watkins, is terrible.

Somehow this team is able to my Giants annually so I can’t say much but has anyone given thought to besides McCoy the personal isn’t very good. They might have speed at WR but neither Jackson or Maclin can hurt teams between the hashes. Cole is solid on defense but other then that they are average at best anywhere else. Ryans is ok but if he was that good I doubt Houston would have let him go. The safeties are terrible and the rest of the linebackers (Jordan) aren’t very good.

Andy Reid as head coach with the Eagles:

    Regular season : 129 – 82 – 1 .611 win pct

    Post season: 10 – 9 .526 win pct

The wins have been better with Andy than anytime I can remember (& I’ve been a fan since the ’70s). It’s not like we’ve won Super Bowls before Andy Reid, so maybe we shouldn’t be bashing so much. With that said, maybe it is time for a fresh start, just remember though… the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence.

That’s completely off-bass. The personnel (correct form of the word, btw) is not the issue. They are stacked at WR (funny you’d cut up on Maclin when he burned the Lions for a 60 yard TD). The D-line is the best we’ve had. The corners are excellent if they are used properly. Celek is a beast, as in McCoy. The only real weak spot is the OL due to injury. The problem is the scheme, play calling and discipline. All of that is COACHING.

Mind you I said that long before he was exposed as a dog killer, and that has nothing to do with this. From a pure football point of view, the Eagles (or anyone else) are never going anywhere with Vick.

  52. droop says: Oct 15, 2012 5:57 PM

Andy Reid is clearly making it seem like letting go of Vick will be a tough decision, when in retrospect, he faked an emotional attachment to Kolb and McNabb. One’s trying to rejuvenate his career in Arizona and the other is analyzing football on NFL Network.

I’m an Eagles fan and Andy Reid does a great job with job. He’s a genuine businessman.

Going with Michael Vick at QB isn’t the issue. Selecting an offensive coordinator for the defensive coordinator position IS.

Last season, the defense collapsed with 4th quarter leads how many times? Five?

This season, they’ve now done it twice in a row.

Unless Vick is going to start playing safety or defensive end, not sure how Andy (or anyone else) can legitimately pin this loss on him.

  61. laserw says: Oct 15, 2012 8:16 PM

I don’t know why there is all this rage against Andy Reid.

You know he doesn’t prepare his team well, takes mediocre quarterbacks and develops a system to make them look 10x better than they are, can’t handle the really big games with his preparation, and is questionable on talent evaluation.

Yet, the Eagles have had a good run with him even given that his professional abilities are overrated and that his defensive coordinator saved his hide most of the time.

Getting rid of Andy will not improve the Eagles. As long as they continue to procure worthless pieces of human debris for players, they’ll be worse with someone else. There isn’t a hint of true talent on that team that has any sense of ethics and professionalism. They are greedy me-too players that you can’t depend on.

Keep Andy if you want to be just above the Redskins or get rid of him if you want to finish last.
