Kevin Gilbride gets the last laugh in war of words with Jim Harbaugh

Kevin Gilbride AP

Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh exchanged cross words last week as Gilbride said the officials allow 49ers defensive end Justin Smith to get away with holding, and Harbaugh replied that it was inappropriate for Gilbride to attempt to influence the officials.

Gilbride got the last laugh.

After the Giants beat the 49ers 26-3 on Sunday, Gilbride said he got a kick out of the fact that Harbaugh made such a big deal out of his comments, saying he was glad that Harbaugh’s reaction caused a national audience to see what Gilbride had said.

It was great,” Giblride said of Harbaugh’s reaction, via the New York Daily News. “All of a sudden, now everybody in the country saw it. It worked well.”

Gilbride said he was “shocked” that Harbaugh made such a big deal out of it, as Gilbride had actually intended to compliment Smith by talking about what a disruptive presence he is on the line.

“I have great respect for their front, and I have unbelievable respect for the guy [Smith], tremendous,” Gilbride said. “I thought it was just in a litany of compliments. . . . [A]ll of a sudden, he [Harbaugh] turned it into a negative thing.”

Now it’s time for Harbaugh to stop focusing on what the Giants were saying about the 49ers, and focus all of his attention on what the Giants did to the 49ers.

I guess Harbaugh should have spent more time in drafting plays instead of drafting speeches. Maybe he’s thinking about a political career down the road as evidenced by his focus on being negative to others in effort to boost his agenda.

i remember on monday night football

buddy ryan punched gilbride in the face,

it was great, everyone saw it…

houston oilers – gilbride wouldnt stop throwing it with the lead,

run the ball, let buddy ryan defense win it for ya bud!

Ok Kevin, you won. Congrats. Move on. Don’t make Buddy Ryan put you in your place.

    I love it.

And the funny part was, despite Aikman’s attempts to ignore it, they caught Smith on replay holding Boothe and Beatty, which he did the entire NFC Championship Game as well ha.

  6. nygmenruleny says: Oct 15, 2012 2:05 PM

That snorting sound you are hearing is Gilbride trying not to bust a gut over Captian Over-reaction out on the left coast. Harbaugh should charge him rent for living in his head all week instead of focusing on getting his team ready to play. BTW, when do the ‘we beat ourselves’ comments start coming from SF?

  7. suhisabeast90 says: Oct 15, 2012 2:09 PM

Harbaugh has a lot of growing up to do. Veteran coaches around the league will be taking him to school all year.

  8. andrewproughcfe says: Oct 15, 2012 2:16 PM

Never forget – this is the same Harbaugh who tried to punch Jim Kelly for questioning his quarterbacking skills, and in the process broke his hand.

To say that Harbaugh is easily provoked into stupid over-reactions may be a bit of an understatement.

  9. rycoem says: Oct 15, 2012 2:18 PM

Harbaugh has always seemed to me to be wound pretty tight with a healthy dose of paranoia…this whole episode is him making a mountain out of a mole hill – again

  10. patyofeet says: Oct 15, 2012 2:21 PM

Justin Smith knows who Keven Gilbide is now!!!! Impressive win, especially not having all our players on deck. I love the use who we have attitude NYG has….. No excuses just play ball and win!

The wheels are coming off the 49er express just as we knew they would.

  12. bigperm33 says: Oct 15, 2012 2:26 PM

Both Harbaugh coaches are clearly very good coaches. But they also both appear to be easily distracted by issues outside of what happens on the field during a game.

  13. szwhtsup123 says: Oct 15, 2012 2:30 PM

Nice job Kevin. That simple ploy to get into Harbaugh’s head worked wonders. Not real bright and way too emotional, their coaching yesterday reeked of panic. Sure was fun to watch the Giants roll them after all their player yapping about “their Super Bowl” rings from last year and their quest for big revenge. Shut up. Though maybe not pretty always, this Big Blue train keeps a rolling right back to the Super game…..

  14. docsweeney says: Oct 15, 2012 2:30 PM

What is it about recent Niners coaches – Singletary dropping his pants, Harbaugh getting chippy with every other coach?

It’s a nice town, you’d think it would mellow you out a little.

  15. riverhorsey says: Oct 15, 2012 2:34 PM

I wouldn’t say he got the last laugh just yet.

  16. ocdn says: Oct 15, 2012 2:37 PM

Once again, Harbaugh makes a jerk out of himself with his mouth and actions.

  17. gochargersgo says: Oct 15, 2012 2:38 PM

Congratulations Giants fans! You won. I know being humble is a foreign concept to all of you and generally unconceivable but try giving it a shot anyways.

  18. gcsuk says: Oct 15, 2012 2:41 PM

Glad the Giants won. However, I hope they keep a level head about it and don’t get too “chirpy”. It was one game for both teams, albeit a big one as a measuring stick. Good for the Giants, not so good for SF. But there is still PLENTY of football to play. No championships are won in October.

  19. folkcrusader says: Oct 15, 2012 2:45 PM

Harbaugh losing a battle of wits? No way. He’s the smartest guy on the field, just ask him.

  20. andrewfbrowne says: Oct 15, 2012 2:49 PM

Imagine what would have happened if Gilbride wanted to shake Harbaugh’s hand?

Umm…It’s actually time for Harbaugh to start focusing on the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers season didn’t end yesterday, contrary to popular belief: There is a game this Thursday against a division rival.

  23. 7swag7 says: Oct 15, 2012 3:00 PM

In light of the old Oiler’s sideline ruckus, Gilbride must really enjoy outshining the Ryan boys each year, i.e. being the better than the other team in town (Rex’s Jets) and being better than another’s team in the NFC East (Rob’s Cowgirls). Have another bowl of Cap’n Crunch, Ryan family.

  24. jpb12 says: Oct 15, 2012 3:00 PM

I’m sure Buddy Ryan told Harbaugh to punch that Gilbride right in the nose

Excellent win by the Giants. Harbaugh showed his inexperience. Enjoy it NY fans….. It is week 6. Niners beat you in the regular season last year, and you went on to win the SB. Don’t think for a second the Niners wont see you again in January.

The Giants won. You got us. But don’t try to act like you’re unstoppable. You’re 4-2 just like the niners. You’re also 0-2 in your division. Hope we see you guys in the playoffs. If you manage to make it.

  33. bigbluefan1 says: Oct 15, 2012 3:40 PM

I can tell you that no one on the Giants thinks the season is over and I am sure they had a great flight home but when that plane landed you can be sure that Tom told the Champions thats over now onto next week.

If there is one thing the G-men have is a coach that will not allow his players to rest on a win unless its Feb and that win is the Super Bowl.

I am sure someone met the plane and handed Tom the Redskin game tape and he and his staff are getting the game plan ready to shut down Bob 3

    Stop.

This is what happens when you beat your chest and guarantee wins. You reach for foolish comments like this in order to assuage the angst that you feel now that you look stupid after your team was blown out in a game that you just KNEW they would win in dominant fashion.

Yes, it was the last laugh with regards to the subject at hand.

And stop acting like you just KNOW the 49ers are going to even MAKE the playoffs. The Seabags and Cards are not going anywhere. Two teams are coming out of the NFC North and the Falcons will win the South.

Get there first. We are going to win our division. You just need to eat crow, because you were amongst the others who were bragging all week.

I thought about it for less than a second, and SF better win Thursday or they are going to be in a dogfight just to secure a Wild Card, much less worrying about seeing the Giants in January.

We get to gloat about absolutely thumping the 9ers.

It’s funny that 49er fans were all talking about how this was a revenge game and they would show the Giants who really deserved to win the Super Bowl last year, but now that they got out played and out classed yesterday, the game is no big deal. Yep, that’s the usual response.

And I for one know there is plenty of football left and anything can happen. If any fans know, it’s Giants fans. The 49ers are a great team and one bad game does not make a season, but we sure as hell get to gloat about it because I’m pretty sure if we lose, we would have been hearing about it from 9er fans.

I don’t see anyone overreacting. Just the crow-eaters looking for a way to distract people away from their week-long guarantees. Giants fans are not bragging or declaring anything. You’re imagining things just like your paranoid coach.

Yup, and I’m here to remind every last one of you 49er clown fans and Giants haters who guaranteed that SF would win, because we all knew you would retreat, or stay here and try to come up with everything imaginable to deter people from focusing on the subject at hand.

I almost never get back at fans who brag during the week (or all offseason like SF fans did), because it is a waste of my time. But you people, you who have come out of the woodwork in the past year or so, after being in hiding for a decade, deserve every bit of what is being given to you right now.

Giants are already focused on gameplanning against Bob. No Super Bowl declarations or “see you in January”, just talking about the topic at hand. Not the 80s, not “Coughlin fired”, not “it’s just Week 6″ or any of the things that SF fans would have CERTAINLY been saying had the 49ers won yesterday.

Go giants! Coming from a lions fan. Shows how much of a big mouth Harbaugh is and how he fails to realize this is the pros. Nice butt kickin New York! Are you niners fans STILL thinking Alex smith is a great QB??

  48. annes22 says: Oct 15, 2012 5:41 PM

Maybe Mr Harbaugh should focus on how bad his team was yesterday. They got a good old ass kicking
from the Giants, so maybe they are not as good as they think they are. Alex Smith was horrible.

  49. goldrush36 says: Oct 15, 2012 5:50 PM

How sad an existence it must be when a 49ers loss is practically the best day of a few lions fans’ lives simply because their own team can’t beat them
