ReutersWhen the Patriots last saw Tim Tebow, they harassed him into a miserable performance during a 45-10 playoff victory over the Broncos.
Tebow’s a Jet now, you might have already heard something about that, and memories of that 9-of-26 performance haven’t dimmed Belichick’s view of the player he’ll see across the field again this Sunday. Belichick, who has a close relationship with Tebow’s college coach Urban Meyer, was asked about Tebow at his Tuesday press conference and had plenty of nice things to say about Tebow’s versatility as an offensive player and the wrinkle he provides the Jets on special teams.
“Yeah, absolutely. There’s no question about it. We saw him play last year. He quarterbacked that team to the playoffs in Denver and in addition to some of the quarterbacking things, he’s done a lot of other things for the Jets,” Belichick said in comments distributed by the team. “Yeah, of course he’s a valuable guy. There’s no doubt about that.”
Rex Ryan has preached all season that part of Tebow’s value is that teams will have to spend practice time preparing to defend against him, although that’s tempered by the fact that the Jets haven’t used him all that much on offense. Belichick might respect Tebow’s ability, but the combination of his success against Tebow last season and the amount of time Tebow has actually played this year suggests the Patriots won’t be going overboard on the planning front.
