Norv Turner asked if seat is hot after embarrassing collapse

It seems like Chargers coach Norv Turner has been on the hot seat as long as he’s had a seat.

But the temperature may have never been hotter than it is right now.

The Chargers are 3-3, but have lost their last two in embarassing fashion, giving up 17 unanswered to allow the then-winless Saints to comeback, and last night allowing 35 unanswered to the Broncos in a frankly ridiculous loss.

With the bye week coming up, Turner was asked post-game if he thought this might be the end.

I’m not going to comment on that,” Turner said, via Nick Canepa of U-T San Diego, who noted it was probably the first time Turner was asked that question after a game.

He doesn’t have to, does he? This one feels as eventual as can be. After years of teasing with talent, the Chargers haven’t taken the next step.

And now, it looks like they’ve taken a major step backward, leaving them shell-shocked in the wake of a ridiculous loss.

We thought we were better than this,” cornerback Quentin Jammer said. “You have a 24-point lead …”

That’s a sentence that doesn’t need finishing by anyone other than a Spanos.

  1. I feel bad for Chargers’ fans, since it’s not like they wanted this guy to begin with. But the owner(s) and that arrogant asshat GM got what they deserved.

It boggled my mind when the Chargers hired Norv and the Cowboys hired Phillips in the same season. Ditto the Chiefs with Crennel last year. These guys can’t hack it as NFL head coaches — that much should have already been abundantly clear.

  2. Turner is finished for sure after this season (if he makes it that long). I actually felt bad for him last night watching the post-game press conference.

  3. ive defended norv as long as i can. get rid of this guy. i cannot for the life of me understand how you dont make ANY half time adjustments, no runs, where the f was mathews, then you throw schemes at them that they saw in the first half.

    absolutely embarrassing.

its either the Chargers hate their fans or they just need a reason to move. Cause after that abysmal display, i cant imagine people shelling out 100+ on a ticket to watch them choke it away.

Chargers are like a cheating girlfriend.

  4. The Chargers just HAD to fire Marty for the unforgivable sin of winning the division year after year, with the final straw of finishing 14-2, and then arranging the amazing coup of landing multiple failed head coach Norv, who has always had a firm grasp on mediocrity. The only reason they so doggedly stick with him is that otherwise, they actually have to admit they made a horribly stupid mistake.

  5. “We thought we were better than this,” cornerback Quentin Jammer said.

You are who we all thought you were.

The San Diego Chargers Super Bowl Express has derailed.

    Choo, choo!

  6. The Chargers front office should have their collective heads examined for ever thinking he was going to lead them to the promised land. And they fired Schottenheimer for this disaster. Talk about a zero sum game.

  7. They never should have fired Marty Schottenheimer. The year they fired Marty they were like 14-2 and made it to the AFC Championship. Never understood firing a coach after a great season that doesn’t end in a title. You get one game away, better than 28 teams in the league and that isn’t enough to earn you a “Try it again next year”?

  8. Its not his fault the Elite QB would not play in SD the Giants got Eli and the chargers got some beads and shells.

    Cry me a Phil Rivers.

  9. wow, Chargers stink!! Take away 10 points the Broncos gave to them by their special teams. Rivers has lost a step or two this going back to next year. or is it that he doesn’t have an O line or is it that he only have 1 capable wide receiver? ultimately it has to go back to coaching Norv Turner can not finish a game. 35 unfreaking answered points and 17 against a winless team. Broncos stepped on the gas in the second half and never looked back.

  10. As a fan of the talentless Browns, it kills me to see all the years of wasted player talent under Norv Turner. What a terrible coach. Get rid of this guy now San Diego.

  11. Between Norv Turner and Philip Rivers they certainly blew that game up last night. That was a horrible display. Maybe you are not as good as you think you are, look in the mirror.

  12. Pretty sure their GM does not deserve to stay if Norv Turner goes. He is the inspiration for canning Shotty after a 15-1 season, and putting in place a guy EVERYONE knew would not get the job done (except for him apparently) and hasn’t. The only way its fair to fire Turner is to fire the GM too.

  13. And to think they got rid of Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 season to hire a doofus like Norv Turner.

  14. Norv Turner is the Dom Capers of offense. Good coordinator, good presence to have on a staff, but lousy head coach.

  15. When is enough enough Mr. Spanos?? Thru all the demoralizing loses over the years, last night was insane and brutal. For me, a long time Charger fan I have had ENOUGH !! Time to now ignore any of the remaining games and cleanse myself of being a Charger fan. Fans are pleading with you to man up and shake things up.

  16. The picture of a giddy Norvette Turner at the end of the first half was a classic moment – just like he’s done many times before in his career, he’s allowed things to get out of control. His Washington years were like groundhog day – every game was the same old recipe of poor coaching, poor planning, and poor preparation. It was not unusual for his teams in the first game to develop cramps because he never considered the humidity in Washington and to get his players hydrated before games.

Norvette is not head-coaching material – he has no ability to discipline people and has poor player development skills. If his players want to improve, they’ll give up on Norvette now and allow this thing to end like it should.

Norv smiling at half time and scowling at the end of the game. That’s Norvette – an idiot!

  17. 14-2 was six seasons ago and filled with the classic McCree failed interception that led to the demise of that 14-2 team.

As AJ said … the organization was dysfunctional after losing their OC and DC. AJ should of included himself in that evaluation; and it was not Marty’s fault ( although 4 and 11 in the early game is balls, like sean payton’s 2nd half onside kick – gamble ).

Norv has no ability to be creative and I often have to remind myself that the chargers so have an OC ( Hal Hunter ) but he also splits as a Line Coach. Norv might be a great OC but has no constructive discipline to help his players recover or adapt when the opposing team starts to man-up and ball.

maybe this loss is what the organization needs to weed out the rest of the dysfunctional elements.

  18. I don’t think this is the time to panic. Now, I’m a Saints fan and I know right now we’re not on of the favorite teams in the NFL but no really thought that we were going to go 0 and16. As far as what happened Monday night the Chargers were’nt the frist team to have that happen to and I doubt they will be the last. And, it wasn’t Ryan Fritzpatrick that led the comeback. It was Payton Manning. This has just been a bad two week period. If you fire Norv Turner I promise you it will turn into a long season. And, you will find yourselves rebuilding. If I’m a Chargers fan I’d hope that at this point they just stay the course.

  19. Look, I’m as fed up as anyone, but can we please stop with the incorrect crap about firing Marty Schottenheimer? After the playoff loss to the Patriots A.J. Smith recommended KEEPING Marty because he felt the team was close and there was no need to blow things up. The team offered him a one year extension which was not to Marty’s liking, so got butt hurt and said no to the extension. Then he decided he’d rather just get himself fired so he could have a year’s paid vacation and not be a lame duck coach. So MARTY insisted on bringing in his brother to interview to be the defensive coordinator after the owner told him he couldn’t. Marty pressed the issue with his boss (Dean Spanos) and predictably he lost (but he really won since he was apparently trying to get fired). Yet people will still insist to this day that he was fired over the playoff loss, and that A.J. Smith fired him.

  20. It doesn’t get any worse than being a Charger fan.

No history at all, never winning a damn thing, your hometown hero ends up being a coward and commits suicide, and now moving to L.A.

Wow, it sucks to be you.

  21. What goes around for GM Smith, comes around. What I once thought was the best team to never win a SB, the Chargers now are a team that will never make it to the big dance as long as Smith is the GM. Smith deserves Rivers after he got rid of Marty. Oh, and Rivers is really lagging behind Eli and Big Ben from the ’04 QB graduating class.

  22. GM Smith and ownership are to blame. Smith has an ego that can’t cover the checks he writes. Fire him TODAY! The assistant GM can’t do any worse for the rest of the year. Norm has to either retire or leave at the end of the season.

  23. Plenty of Charger history, just not much of the Championship variety. I don’t think we’re the miserable bunch you’d like us to be. Even through the 1-15 season, it’s always been good times down at the stadium.

My tailgate party even congratulated Bronco fans on the comeback and for sticking it out. And the after game tailgate party lasted for hours.

It’s a game dude. And we’ve lost 3 of 16. Plenty of season left to get it fixed.

  24. Last time I checked, the #17 jersey didn’t have Turner stitched on the back. It was Rivers throwing the Pick 6’s.

I’ve been a Charger fan my entire life, and at this moment I’m far more frustrated with Rivers than Norv Turner. I was just saying before the game what an Underrated QB Rivers was, and then he went and has a game like that.

I think we’re about to be in some rebuilding stages, which should include some higher-ups, in my opinion.

Win or lose-and mostly, it’s lose-Raider fan shows up. You get some credit for not hiding, like humd0lt and nateIQ69, but that’s a weak post. That’s all Charger fan has? “We suck, but at least we aren’t the Raiders.” That game was about the Chargers, and their historical fear of success. Save your Raider smack for Raider week. That’s the only time Raider fan cares about that choke of a team.

  26. It could be worse, we could be raiduh fans!

That’s why your team hired there ex-coach!

  27. i agree norv has to go.. guy isnt head coach amterial and never was.. to clear things up the chargers didnt just fire schottenheimer… after the 14-2 season ans choking to the patriots in the divisional round, the chargers lost both offensive and defensive coordinators to head coaching positions.. dc phillips went to dallas as hc and oc cam cameron went to miami as head coach.. schottenheimer had no oc or dc.he wanted to hire his son as the offensive coordinator and aj smith told him NO!!!
