Patrick Willis not happy with Matt Millen’s criticism

MattMillenGettyImages Getty Images

Matt Millen, the former NFL linebacker and former Lions president who currently serves as a TV analyst, was unimpressed with the 49ers’ linebackers when breaking down San Francisco’s loss to the Giants on Sunday. When 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis heard that Millen criticized him, he wasn’t happy.

Millen said on 95.7 The Game in San Francisco that he thought Willis and 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman had the worst game he had ever seen the two of them play on Sunday. Willis later went on the same radio show, heard the same comments, and said Millen doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Whoever this Matt Millen guy is, I’d like to ask him if he could do what we do every day and do what we do for 16 games a year and see if he can hold up every game,” Willis said, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. “I doubt he would. I doubt he would be able to consistently play at a high level as Bowman and I do. I really don’t care about what this guy has to say.”

Now, it’s easy to rip Millen after his disastrous stint running the Lions, and believe me, I’ve ripped Millen plenty myself. But the reality is Millen did, in fact, play linebacker in the NFL at a high level. So Willis is wrong when he says Millen couldn’t do it. If Millen ever criticizes an NFL general manager for drafting too many bad wide receivers with Top 10 picks, that G.M. will be justified in saying Millen has no room to criticize. But Willis is wrong to suggest that Millen doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to playing the linebacker position.

Still, Willis may be right to think that people were too quick to jump off the 49ers’ bandwagon this week.

“We went in and everybody is on your bandwagon when you are playing good,” Willis said. “Everybody has everything positive to say and when you don’t do well, they got everything critical to say. For us, we are going to continue to do the things we need to do and that’s play football. Every game is not going to be a perfect game. Every game is not going to be your best game.”

What the 49ers need to do now is play one of their better games on Thursday against the Seahawks. If they do, they’ll be back to being clear favorites in the NFC West, and Sunday’s loss to the Giants won’t sting quite so badly anymore.

“Just win baby” er. Patrick . That is how it is and always will be….WIN.

  2. t16rich says: Oct 16, 2012 1:31 PM

I wouldn’t sweat it Patrick. Matt Millen has no right to criticize in this league. He had his time as a player before exposing himself as an absolute dummy when it comes to player evaluation. In fact, if Millen is critiquing you, it’s probably a good thing. If he says your good, then you’ll probably be out of the league and broke in 2 years. Millen lost his right to criticize players the day he started drafting for the Lions.

  3. dgforreal says: Oct 16, 2012 1:32 PM

I’ll never understand why players don’t research who’s talking about them before responding.

Millen played for the Niners for pete’s sake.

Patrick, Matt Millen has four (4) Super Bowl rings. How many you got?

  5. lippy4246 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:33 PM

Millen is actually a very good analyst. He was a good player and has a couple of Super Bowl rings to show for it

  6. niners816 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:34 PM

This is coming from Matt Millen…enough said.

  7. garonm says: Oct 16, 2012 1:34 PM

Huge Niner fan, but Millen is right. How can you lose 26 to 3 and still act like that wasn’t one of the worst games that you’ve played. It was bad on all sides of the ball! It was bad coaching too! After watching the Vikings game, I thought the style of gameplan was behind you, but then you pulled out the same crap for a tough Giants team. Just shut your mouth and go onto the next game with… HUMBLE hearts.

Maybe Willis doesn’t know how to handle some criticism, albeit constructive. Millen did not say he was a bad player, he just had a bad game.

And for Willis to be so arrogant to not at least recognize that Millen won a championship with the 49ers was a bit disrespectful.

  9. trojanwarrior007 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:36 PM

agreed. Players these days need to study their NFL history.

    but as a player…

    what u talkin bout willis?

hes got mad rings with mad teams – he can play

  12. docsweeney says: Oct 16, 2012 1:37 PM

Didn’t Millen play for the 49ers for part of his career? Sounds like P. W. needs to pick up a gameday program.

  13. randomcommenter says: Oct 16, 2012 1:38 PM

Millen played LB at a near hall of fame level and won multiple Super Bowls. He knows what he’s talking about with LB play.

Millen actually won a SB with the 49ers. There is probably a picture of Millen somewhere in the 49ers complex that Willis walks past each day.

Obviously Willis has no idea who Millen is, but even so, how can he argue that he played a bad game? The Giants ran all over them.

Willis letting the SEC education shine through.

  14. bluefunk72 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:39 PM

Willis better shut his mouth and listen to Millen on this one!!!

  15. captn58crunch says: Oct 16, 2012 1:41 PM

Someone needs to inform Willis that ‘this guy Matt Millen….’ did do everything that Willis does and for a whole lot of years longer and better that Willis probably every will. Millen was a terrible personnel evaluator and GM, but that is not what Willis is questioning. Millen was a way better football player that Willis will ever be.
This all just smacks of the arrogance and pompousness that the 49ers exhibit these days, and it comes down from that punk they have for a coach, Jim Harbaugh.

  16. freebird2011 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:41 PM

Millen played LB for the Oakland Raiders, the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Redskins. In Millen’s 12-year NFL playing career, he played on four Super Bowl-winning teams. Millen won a Super Bowl ring with each of the three teams for which he played.

Its kind of funny that people act like its the end of the world for the niners…They lost to the SB champs, its not like we got blown out by the raiders or something…

  18. tennis22drew says: Oct 16, 2012 1:43 PM

You could argue that the style of LB Willis and Bowman play in 2012 is pretty different than Millen’s day

  19. cantonbound13 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:43 PM

Matt Millen is lucky to have a job.

  20. punkmonkeyfaces says: Oct 16, 2012 1:44 PM

  21. lightcleric says: Oct 16, 2012 1:44 PM

Willis doesn’t know who Matt Millen is, Whitner doesn’t know who Gilbride is…

Do these guys live and practice under a rock?

  22. raider8er says: Oct 16, 2012 1:44 PM

I remember what a dominant player Millen was for the Raiders and even better with the 49ers.

Willis should know who he is. There is probably a picture of him in the 9er facility.

  23. geniusfan says: Oct 16, 2012 1:44 PM

I have a hard time taking anything Matt Millen says about football seriously.

  24. sagnam says: Oct 16, 2012 1:45 PM

I hate Matt Millen as much as anyone but Willis is clueless here.

It’s funny Willis criticizes somebody(Millen) for commenting on something(LB play) when he thinks they know nothing about it, but yet Willis is criticizing someone(Millen) on something Willis know nothing about(Millen’s credentials).

  25. coseybedaman says: Oct 16, 2012 1:45 PM

Why on Earth would Willis take such offense to this, and then right after admit how bad a game they had. Matt Millen stated exactly what everyone knows. You dont get blown out by 3 TDs at home, and then be offended when people jump off your bandwagon. That says a lot about your team when that happens. That is the reason people would jump off the bandwagon, and not due to Matt Millen’s comments.

  26. areyoudue says: Oct 16, 2012 1:47 PM

Hey Patrick, come talk to us after you’ve completed 12 years in the league and have 3 superbowl rings to show for it…

  27. roadtrip3500 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:48 PM

The 49ers seem to lack historical knowledge. First, it was Justin Smith’s “who is Kevin Gilbride”; now Willis apparently doesn’t know Millen was a quality linebacker who won one of his Super Bowl rings with San Fran.

Surprised they had any idea who Singletary was while he was coach… but considering how they played for him, maybe they didn’t.

  28. stull60060 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:48 PM

Willis is a PUNK! Millen has at least two World Championship Rings as a middle linebacker for the Raiders and the 9′ers.

  29. areyoudue says: Oct 16, 2012 1:49 PM

Fact check, actually Millen has 4 rings.

  30. packsucks says: Oct 16, 2012 1:51 PM

Millen is a idiot he showed it in Detroit as the GM
also the Raiders could have won without him.

  31. freebird2011 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:52 PM

Of course, Millen never played at Willis’s level either:

    5× Pro Bowl (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011)
    4× First-team All-Pro (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011)
    Second-team All-Pro (2008)
AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year (2007)
3× NFL Alumni Linebacker of the Year (2007, 2009, 2010)
    2× Butkus Award (2006, 2009)
    2× First-team All-American (2005, 2006)

  32. justintuckrule says: Oct 16, 2012 1:52 PM

Love how my Giants leave reverberating wakes of destruction after they blow out teams. First TB, then Cam Newton is shot for the year and now Willis is criticizing the mettle of a former SF LB great.

  33. tundey says: Oct 16, 2012 1:54 PM

Matt Millen might have been a very good linebacker in his playing days but he’s a crap evaluator of talent. Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest basketball player ever but he SUCKS at being a GM or coach or talent evaluator.

  34. steeltuff says: Oct 16, 2012 1:54 PM

Millen certainly had his problems as GM for the Lions and was mainly ineffective in getting Detroit to the next level, but in order to shut him up, Patrick, you must play better and not be so emotionally sensitive. You’re making good money, you’re on a good team . . . now go out and show us your team is better than the Giants . . . and make critics like Matt Millen quiet as a church mouse.

  35. dwarftosser says: Oct 16, 2012 1:55 PM

Patrick Willis, you don’t need to respond to Millen’s criticism. Millen lost all his credibility long ago. Yes, he did play 12 years in the NFL as a slightly above average LB.. even made the probowl one year, but he was never anywhere close to the level of Willis and Bowman and has no idea what it takes to play at that level.

I have no idea how Millen still has a job. He was a terrible TV analyst, was a terrible GM, and is back to being a terrible TV analyst. He’s got to have some dirty pictures of some pretty powerful people, because there is no other way to explain how he is still employed.

  36. doe22us says: Oct 16, 2012 1:55 PM

    Yeah Willis you guys sucked.

  37. goldrush36 says: Oct 16, 2012 1:58 PM

Millen was a damn good football player but no way was he way better than Willis ever will be. Especially considering the offense is so protected now.

  38. reefraj says: Oct 16, 2012 1:59 PM

You know what I’m with Willis on this. Millen might have played LB but he was no Willis or a Bowman. And one more thing Willis doesn’t have Montana or young back there. If our offense stays on the field longer on Sunday and didn’t turn the freaking ball over three times or go three and out the second half I bet the giants don’t run so well on a rested NINERS defense no excuses here we live by our scheme and die by our scheme but don’t ever compare Millen to Willis and Bowman our two every down LB’s.

  39. acruiser75 says: Oct 16, 2012 2:00 PM

PLEASE everyone figure it out. it wasnt the defenses fault we lost to the giants..Alex turned the ball over way too much and kept our defense out on the field for too long..they got tired becuase every time we got the ball back we gave it to them. The scored was 10-3 the first half and second half is when alex really lost it and kept the defense on the field. We needed to run the ball period.

Hey, wild and crazy theory here. Maybe they didn’t play all that bad. Maybe, just maybe, the defending Super Bowl Champs are actually, you know, a good team? Maybe? Or is it now accepted as fact that every time a team loses to the Giants they “beat themselves”?

Don’t get me wrong – Willis sounded a little silly for saying what he did about Millen, but the people on here blasting him and Smith for their lack of trivial knowledge are just as ridiculous. Willis and Smith are paid to keep the other team from moving the football. They’re pretty good at that. Being a football geek isn’t a prerequisite to play in the NFL.

  54. source7769 says: Oct 16, 2012 2:23 PM

The constant cynical and sanctimonious tone of this site bothers me.

For starters, Ta’amu is third on the depth chart and not doing anything impressive from a football standpoint. Could it be that Clark and Hampton are doing what most people would do for a family member in crisis?

Secondly, this is simply how the world works. The higher the value of the house you seek to purchase, the more you’ll pay for it. In other words, the more upside that’s involved — the greater the costs you’re willing to bear. It’s very simple and just a common sense reality for NFL teams and basically every other living vertebrate on the planet. Quit acting all holier-than-thou as if you’re above anything here.

LOL probably true but you are comparing arguably the best to ever play the game and a highly talented but nowhere near the best linebacker. Willis should’ve thought before he spoke but very good linebackers usually aren’t a household name 20-30 years after the fact. MOST of these guys aren’t drafted for their book smarts

Millen has no cred when it comes to evaluating tape.

  62. justintuckrule says: Oct 16, 2012 3:10 PM

Millen played in an era when defenses actually had to defend the run (in a division playing HOFer Eric Dickerson 2x per year and others that modern RBs can’t hold a candle to) and 25 pass plays per game was a high figure. Willis plays in an era where he gets to drop into coverage 60% of the time and shadow a TE who’s nowhere near as athletic as him unless he’s playing Graham or Gronk. The RBs he plays against for the 15 or so times teams dare to run include greats such as Beanie Wells, SJAX and whoever preceded Skittles in Seattle. I think Millen knows a thing or two about linebacking.

  63. ninerdynasty says: Oct 16, 2012 3:17 PM

  69. mogogo1 says: Oct 16, 2012 3:32 PM

Willis looks bad on so many levels. Yes, he should have some clue who Matt Millen is and that he played linebacker very well for the Niners. But to me it’s worse yet that they looked terrible against the Packers and his response to criticism is to go uber-defensive about it. If I were a Niners fan I’d be hoping he’d be pissed about how they played, not trying to justify it and kill the messenger.

  70. canadianvikingfaniii says: Oct 16, 2012 3:33 PM

My respect for Willis has now gone down. How does he not know about Matt Millen, and to disrespect him and what he has done as a NFL player? He should learn a thing or two before opening his mouth and spewing stupid nonsense. What Millen said was not even malicious or an insult to Willis as a player, he merely stated he played his poorest game.

  71. reefraj says: Oct 16, 2012 3:36 PM

Put Willis in Millens playing days and put Millen in Willis playing days. With all that said Alex and the O hung our D out to dry point blank our players are beasts but they are still human guys they were tired and that’s that let Bradshaw run on a rested 49ers defense lets see what happens…… 45 the most and no TD’s.

It is completely AMAZING when current players show off their utter ignorance when talking about their predecessors, especially ones who played the same position and at a very high level. The players of today are so self-absorbed that the only knowledge they are interested in is anything to do with them! Millen’s college career at PSU was outstanding and he won SBs with SF and Oakland. He was the ultimate competitor and could keep up with ANY linebacker presently on the field. Perhaps this explains why the players of today are so stingy, regarding helping with pensions of former brothers under the shield and dismissive of the men on whose shoulders they stand…SHAMEFUL.

  75. realitypolice says: Oct 16, 2012 3:44 PM

People pointing out what a lousy talent evaluator Millen is miss the point of the article.

Willis specifically said “I doubt he would be able to consistently play at a high level as Bowman and I do”, not “I think he’s a lousy talent evaluator”.

Willis made a comment based upon a stunning level of ignorance of the history of the game he plays for a living, and he is 100% dead wrong in his comments.

    Period.

  76. yousuxxors says: Oct 16, 2012 3:51 PM

  77. niners6262 says: Oct 16, 2012 3:51 PM

Willis and the Niners D basically played a bad 4th quarter. It’s going to happen from time to time. Willis should not have gotten worked up on Millens’s comments.

However, to say Millen was better than Willis because he had the luxury of being on 4 Superbowl winning team doesn’t make sense. It’s like Trent Dilfer critising Dan Marino.

Willis is already twice the player Millen ever was. A 3 down LB that plays the run well, defends the pass (TE) and can even rush the passer.

I feel bad for Willis, who knows he would have hit on the only thing that Millen did in football that he was good at. After playing LB that was about it.

  79. raysfan1 says: Oct 16, 2012 4:22 PM

Millen was not only a very good LB, he played for the 49′ers. Willis ought to at least know his own team’s history.

    ———————————————————————

Yeah, “no excuses…but if our offense stays on the field longer on Sunday and didn’t turn the freaking ball over three times…”

That’s called making excuses. Why didn’t your vaunted defense just get the ball back. Interception, fumble, 3 and out, you know, like that? Oh wait, they were tired from NOT STOPPING THE GIANTS.

Put Willis on those super bowl teams and I don’t think that team loses much lol. Yeah the Niners won all those championships cause of Matt Millen? Replace Millen with Willis those defenses get better. Period!

  82. raiderlyfe510 says: Oct 16, 2012 5:10 PM

Millen won 4 superbowls with 3 different teams. They all won superbowls his first year with them…no coincidence.

Well, I didn’t watch the films, nor do I have the expertise that either Willis or Millen do. I can say this to Mr. Willis….

Matt Millen HAS done everything you’re doing and did it at a high level for his whole career, so you want to question him about what he saw on film, that’s fine, but Millen is justly qualified to critique your play. Don’t dis him because you don’t know the history of your position in football…

  84. nashwaakkidd says: Oct 16, 2012 5:41 PM

millen was a great player, as an exec, not so much. willis made himself sound like an idiot, and yeah your whole team stunk it up on sunday

  85. nofunleague says: Oct 16, 2012 6:25 PM

Millen belongs with Dan Dierdork on the Deaf, Dumb and Mute network. They are both cut of the same cloth. Just guessers.

  86. brasho says: Oct 16, 2012 6:35 PM

    I don’t understand the denial.

Millen said, “Those two have never played a worse game together.”

Willis responded, “You don’t know what you’re talking about, we’ve played far worse than that.”

All Willis had to do was say, “Yeah, we didn’t play well.”

    +++++++++++++++

I’m pretty sure Willis was nothing more than an egg waiting to be fertilized when Millen won those Super Bowls…. so I’m pretty sure Millen wins that argument… period.

Here’s some perspective about the niners. I’m a Giants fan living in the Bay Area since 1981. Back then, there may have actually have been a species called the Forty Niner Faithful. Then when Montana and Young won those Super Bowls, and when that was all over, a funny thing happened. I stopped seeing the gaudy gold 49er jackets. It was amazing the level that the fans stopped wearing their niner colors. So, the Forty Niners, the real ones, were now extinct. Then Coach Harbaugh comes along and the niners are suddenly competitive after more than a decade and bam! here comes the Forty Niner Faithful. Right. Where were you for more than a decade? I don’t mind the fans, just don’t try to package it with wishful thinking and re-writing history.

That said, I was at the game in my Giants Blue #80 watching my Giants, run a clinic on how to beat the 49ers. I’m sure the Seahawks are champing at the bit to play the niners on Thursday. The blueprint is out there now.

Here’s another point. Coach Harbaugh had a lot of success but now, the Giants lost the first meeting (barely on what should have been a holding call on the last play of the game) then the Championship game, and now this. The Giants made adjustments half way through the first meeting last year and almost pulled it out. The Giants learned from the Championship game in that they couldn’t let Eli take a pounding. So what happened? Pound the ball right at the niners. It eventually worked. Eli was hit once and it should have been flagged. The entire league is now up to speed on what to expect from Harbaugh. It’s a new game boys. Get used to it.

That’s the problem with players today Millen was a great run stopping LB in his day. He has multiple chips with different teams. Is he on PWs level as a player no he wasn’t a every down backer ( he was inactive against the Bills when the Skins won because of his pass coverage). But when u have four rings as a player you can say a guy had a bad game. These players today feel they have to respond to any little criticism it’s sad his skin should be a little thicker!

  92. ceadderman says: Oct 16, 2012 8:17 PM

“Patrick, Matt Millen has four (4) Super Bowl rings. How many you got?”

Name the teams Millen got rings with. Cause he doesn’t have 4. If anything he has 3 at most.

    He played for the Raiders(2)
He moved to the 9ers and got ONE.

Now I agree that Millen was a solid Linebacker in his day, but Ray Lewis is >>>>>>>> than Millen and Lewis is the Cat that Willis should be rightfully compared to. Willis is better than Lewis at the same point in their careers but not by much.

I’m sure that Willis knows who Millen is. Just the game has moved on talentwise since Millen was a Player. ;)

As a Lions fan I hate to defend Fire Millen but dude had a stellar playing career and was awesome in the booth. That being said after a decade of running my Lions into the ground why do people keep giving him a microphone.

  95. yayimspecial says: Oct 17, 2012 12:15 AM

Millen as a gorilla-like oaf with a childlike mentality. Willis doesn’t get paid to research other people in person or on the internet. He gets paid to work out and play football. Matt Millen doesn’t even have the stats compared to Willis!

@gsuk you must be a giants fan lol. That’s right no excuses buddy we couldn’t stop them they were tired I’m a realist not a fanatic. The whole game Bradshaw has 60 or so yards lol that’s really running on us the last drive is where the NINERS messed up and the giants took advantage of them. Good job to the giants that’s how you do it. Don’t forget you giants got some hard earned field goals that started deep in your own territory and then Alex gives you the ball back keep it real do you really think your vaunted defense would have faired better in that situation. C’mon let’s here what you got Nr fanatic.

    Game-Set-Match Willis:
Foremost, the topic here is: Who should be talking. Millen as a communicator/analyst has pretty well established himself as utter crap (not to mention a bit of a punk@ss *itch that would lead one to turn the volume down).

As a player Millen benefited from being a part of the best franchise the game has scene. That’s what got him his rings; a decent player in that system, he made the pro-bowl once.

Willis is nowhere near benefiting from being a part of a system that is better than the contemporaries. Nevertheless, the guy could be nicknamed Mr. Probowl–and, in case you’re not paying attention–he is an outstanding team player. No lesser a d-back than Mike Singletary declared ahead of time his confidence that the guy was going to be superior to the rest one day.

Back to who should be talking–and as I indicated in my lead-in–Willis’ response is more on the mark than Millen’s. Millen, who on the one hand, used hyperbole to criticize defensive play, shot wide of the target. On the other hand, Willis referring to a talking head as if he didn’t know who he was just shows that–in addition to being a superior player–he also has a better grasp on the finer implications of language than Millen does.

What in the WORLD are you talking about? Separate Millen’s GM tenure away from his playing days and a broadcaster. He has EVERY BIT of reason for criticism, especially after Willis was ABSENT Sunday.

    Typical Madden generation

Wasn’t anything that SF’s defense did. Eli was off Sunday or you lose 38-3.
