On Sunday in Tampa Bay, the Chiefs blocked a punt and Buccaneers punter Michael Koenen picked up the ball and awkwardly tossed it right into the armsy of Kansas City’s Edgar Jones, who strolled into the end zone for a touchdown. Bucs coach Greg Schiano took the opportunity to give Koenen a history lesson.
The NFL Films microphones caught Schiano’s exchange with Koenen, in which Schiano surprisingly seemed more amused than angered by his punter’s idiotic play. It was Koenen who approached Schiano on the sideline and said “I shoulda fell on that one,” and Schiano then started to tell Koenen the story of Garo Yepremian.
“Alright live and learn, live and learn, right? Let’s go,” Schiano said, as shown on Inside the NFL. “Before you were born, Garo Yepremian did something like that in the Super Bowl. I’ll tell you about it later.”
In Super Bowl VII, Dolphins kicker Garo Yepremian had a field goal blocked, then picked up the ball, made a lame attempt to throw a pass only to have the ball slip out of his hand, then batted the ball into the air, where it was grabbed by Redskins cornerback Mike Bass, who raced to the end zone for a touchdown.
Fortunately for Koenen, a ridiculous moment from a regular season Chiefs-Bucs game won’t go down in NFL Films infamy the same way Garo’s Gaffe did. And fortunately for the Bucs, they blew out the Chiefs anyway.
