Carson Palmer calls Sunday’s game a “must-win”

There are times when the phrase “must-win game” gets thrown out in situations that aren’t really that dire,

This weekend’s game between the Raiders and the Jaguars is not one of those times. Only seven of the last 156 teams to start a season 1-4 have gone on to make the playoffs and dropping four games under .500 will make it incredibly hard to become the eighth team to pull off that trick. So Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer was exactly right on Wednesday when he addressed the urgency of the situation.

“It’s a must-win for us,” Palmer said, via “It’s an AFC game and an opportunity to start climbing our way back into the race.”

A win would leave the Raiders with at least a plausible argument that they could climb back into the playoff race. At 2-4, they would be a game back of the Broncos and Chargers in the AFC West and they played as well as they have this season in their 27-24 loss to the Falcons last week. It would still be a long shot on the probability scale, but they have the Chiefs and Buccaneers after the Jaguars so they could find themselves in a different situation come the middle of the season with a few wins right now.

That won’t be the case if they don’t beat the Jaguars this Sunday, though.

Jags, Chiefs and Bucs. Win them all and we’re at 500 and in the race.

    Easier said than done.

Raiders were 4-2 at this time last year when the wheels fell off. Maybe this year Al Davis will rise from the grave and the Raiders will make the playoffs.

As much as I don’t want to say it, the play on the field shows the Raiders still aren’t a very good football team. I’ve been disappointed with the offense. There are no excuses for the lack of explosion.

We need some help from the defense!! I know our secondary is depleted but we need to step up!! The dline needs to get heat on the qb so it’ll take some pressure off of our secondary!! And for god sakes get the running game going, last week was a good start but we need mcfadden to hit his full stride now!!!

Bad enough to be a fan of this joke of a franchise…

    Now somehow you’re a part of it…What a shame.

Nice to hear at lease some of the players are thinking about playoffs – coaches and GM sure aren’t. CP3 is quietly having a very good year.

Palmer actually has looked good this season… Raiders are clearly rebuilding and are short on talent. I’m sure some teams next season like Jags or even better a veteran team like Eagles should consider Palmer. He’s just got a few years left.

    “It’s a must-win for us,” Palmer said
    Note to Carson,

At 1-4 all of your games are now a “must-win” if you have any hopes of trying to compete for a division title. Don’t get your hopes up.

It’s a good matchup for the Raiders because the Jaguars are in must-lose mode to keep pace with Cleveland for the first pick in the 2013 draft.

With the 1 st overall pick in the 2013 draft……..

( GM Gene Smith and th MUSTACHE otherwise known as KHAN πŸ™‚ )

…..the Jaguars select Geno Smith, West Va…

I thought your Kansas City Cheapskates won this division back in July?

Listen, you guys are now THE joke of the league, people are actually feeling sorry for fans of these losers.

You need a little perspective, jackass. πŸ™‚

No one is running away with this division. Oakland could easily be 3-2 right now. The games against SD and Atlanta were there for the taking. Oakland has more than enough talent to win the West. They just need to string some wins together, and the next three games are set up for just that.

Oh, by the way, Palmer isn’t going anywhere. The Raiders have been pleased with his play, and so is any objective anlayst. The man has played well. Better than Rivers and whomever KC decides to trot out next. That’s for sure.

I have a hard time not laughing at the notion that Carson Palmer is having a “good year” to this point when his game-losing INT is the difference between 1-4 and 2-3. Wins are more important than stats, and a game-losing INT should disqualify you from having the word “good” next to your name at this stage in the season.

That said, I do appreciate Carson’s attitude going into this game. Let’s see him walk the talk.

Joe….calling out the Chiefs as the joke of the division when your jv team is at 1-4 makes you look like the jackass.

  15. beltlessbuckler says: Oct 18, 2012 1:01 PM

That quitter once said he has no hard feelings towards the Bengals. He’s now proving it by supplying us with an early 2nd round pick next year.

  16. gojags says: Oct 18, 2012 1:37 PM

Whether its a must win for raiders or not, its a must loose for the jags fans to be able to get the #1 draft pick and ouster a mediocre GM.

  17. richc111 says: Oct 18, 2012 1:56 PM

Remember not so long ago the trade for Carson Palmer was declared one of the biggest in history. That seems like 10 years ago already. Boy I bet they wish they had their draft picks back now so they could screw them up too.

  18. NakedCowboy! says: Oct 18, 2012 5:45 PM

raiders are a mystery team… their QB isn’t bad… they have an excellent RB… receivers are not bad too and their D line is pretty good… why are they so bad then?
their season is already over… top 5 pick next year…

  19. radrntn says: Oct 18, 2012 8:34 PM

Lets hope so…7-9 will win the worse division in football this year. I can see the raiders being 4-4 3 weeks from now and right back in the hunt… game at a time so I concur with Carson…must win Sunday

  20. mullman76 says: Oct 18, 2012 9:46 PM

@r8rh8r- Your infatuation with the RAIDERS is on the same level with that simpleton natelan69. He’s in hiding since the MNF debacle, you should do the same.

Beat it rags- concern yourself with the chargers and that joke of a HC/GM/Owner/fanbase.

  21. jjackwagon says: Oct 19, 2012 8:13 AM

    Note to Joey,

Everything I said was true, if the Raiders hope to win the division EVERY game is a must-win.

You are what your record says you are and the Raiders are 1-4 only because they had a bye week. Sounds like you are the one that needs a little perspective.

But of course you bring the Chiefs into this conversation because you are a closet Chiefs fan. Must suck to root for two teams with a combined record of 2-9.
