Jason Pierre-Paul issues a warning to Robert Griffin III

Super Bowl XLVI Getty Images

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had one of the best rushing games of any quarterback in NFL history on Sunday. Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul says that if Griffin thinks he’s going to run well on the Giants this week, he should think again.

Specifically, JPP told RGIII that running toward Pierre-Paul’s side of the field would be a mistake.

Don’t bring it to my side,” Pierre-Paul said. “Go the other way.”

Pierre-Paul says the Giants’ defense has the athleticism to keep Griffin in check.

“Trust me, we chase quarterbacks all time,” Pierre-Paul said. “We turn and run to the ball, no matter what. He may get past us and zoom right past us, but trust me we’re right behind him. You’ve got to respect that too. It’s not all about the speed. We’ve got guys, all 11 guys that can run to the ball very quick. You’d be surprised. Very surprised.”

Griffin has already surprised a lot of defenses so far in his brief NFL career. We’ll see who’s surprised on Sunday.

While this guy is a great player, I think he mouth is starting to right checks that it will get harder and harder to handle.

The Giants will probably be the biggest challenge that RGIII has faced to this point. That being stated, the Giants haven’t faced any QBs like RGIII yet.

I know that he needs to talk to psyche himself up, but he should be careful as that could backfire on him.

  2. daysend564 says: Oct 18, 2012 11:58 AM

Giants don’t talk smack. Nope, not them.

  3. rtant2013 says: Oct 18, 2012 11:58 AM

Yeah exactly, you said it JPP, “we’re going to be behind him,” haha. He’s the fastest qb in the game, and trust me he’s not mike vick, you haven’t played against a guy like RG3. Jared Allen had one sack last weekend and RG3 ran it straight to him on a few plays, and he’s going to do the same to you. Your arrogance is funny though

  4. hendawg21 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:00 PM

What is it with the Giants D-lineman…they have this need to always run their mouth’s…I’m sure this has alreayd made the bulletin board in the Redskins locker room…

  7. illadelphiasphinest says: Oct 18, 2012 12:01 PM

At least its not Osi yapping his trap while he gets burn and sits on the bench.

  8. tbpdog says: Oct 18, 2012 12:01 PM

Hey, the Giants can talk, they won a ring, but I have never seen a team that talked so much trash cry so much when other teams dare to say anything

  9. joegibbsisking says: Oct 18, 2012 12:04 PM

Shockey, Barber, Strahan, Rolle, Jacobs, Osi, JPP. The Giants always have dudes that run their mouth.

Yes, the Giants have the rings to back up their talk, But rings don’t make them a classy org.

  10. realnflmaster says: Oct 18, 2012 12:05 PM

Why do people get upset at trash talk? Seriously? Are you that big of a loser in life that someone hyping themselves and a game up bothers you?

  11. fwippel says: Oct 18, 2012 12:06 PM

After watching what RGIII did last week, I don’t think I’d be throwing out any challenges, but rather waiting to let my play on the field do the talking.

Griffin is NOT another Michael Vick, and if the Giants assume that, they’ll end up on the short side of the score on Sunday.

  12. boyshole25 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:09 PM

I used to sell Jpp peds he didn’t want any this year. I’m not joking….

  13. jamesbarnes says: Oct 18, 2012 12:10 PM

Yes, please focus on the QB and completely ignore the overall #4 ranked running back in the NFL.

  14. comatrip1 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:11 PM

Didn’t have the athleticism to keep Trent Richardson in check.

  15. shawnfromamherst says: Oct 18, 2012 12:11 PM

That’s true. The Giants have not faced any QBs like that. Well, except that Superman guy who celebrated down 23-7 preluding a 36-7 beatdown.

All that said…please stop talking and tweeting GMen.

You’ve got a trophy that does plenty of talking for you.

  16. libertynchurch says: Oct 18, 2012 12:14 PM

Who really cares if RG3 has +100 yards rushing. The key stat ill be his two fumbles and one Int that will help the GMen win by 10.

And I like RG3. Young Gun will have his day. It just wont be against my GMen.

  17. bluebagz says: Oct 18, 2012 12:15 PM

Come on JPP,cut out all this tuff talk already.Practice hard, focus on film study and the assignment for the game and come Sunday ball out. This kid is dangerous and if we do not respect his talents,we will be 4-3 when it’s over.Talk is Cheap!Play the Game!Go Blue!!!!

  18. cowboyhater says: Oct 18, 2012 12:15 PM

Of course they will stop the skins this weekend. Their owner made sure of that this off season with the salary cap penalty. That’s ok though, because in a year or two our time will come in this division. I hope the Gmen bottle up Griffin, that would give our young QB a chance to learn more from the pocket. This will be a good learning experience. Unlike other skins fans out there, I’m willing to wait for him to develop.

  19. randomguy9999 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:16 PM

it’s been proven a million times that if a QB thinks he’s gonna be a running back…. he gets crushed and his career tanks…

you would think RG3 would have been taught a lesson by that smack down a couple of weeks ago…. but I guess not.

if RG3 has the maturity / ego check enough to turn into a real passer / leadership guy… he could have an amazing career….

if he keeps trying to do it all himself… one of these days, there’s going to be a season ending concussion / ACL / broken leg… or worse… he’ll turn into Vick.

  20. rcb0424 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:17 PM

Perry Fewell will have the game plan on point. Any skins fan who thinks last years wins with Grossman mean anything whatsoever are LOST. Our defense is 10 fold better now. We will contain the outside and force RG3 to either beat us running up the middle or beat us with his arm. And either way he’ll have to outscore Eli.

  21. raymondtx says: Oct 18, 2012 12:18 PM

Wasn’t he running his mouth before the season opener when the cowboys slapped them around??

  22. daddyb1gdrawz says: Oct 18, 2012 12:19 PM

I have no problem with JPP comments. For the most part they are right. They do a good job containing Michael Vick and RG3 has a lot of Vick qualities. I do not believe RG3 will run for 100+ yards but he will get some timely rushing yards to extend drives. If they concentrate so much on RG3, they will expose themselves to the deep pass gashing runs. But if there ever was a defense tailor made for RG3 it is the Giants.

  23. jerryjonesmustdie83 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:19 PM

The giants couldn’t keep romo in the pocket! I think RGIII will take it to them JPP’s way especially!

  24. basballguy says: Oct 18, 2012 12:20 PM

What makes them think they can beat RG3 when they couldn’t even beat RG 3 and Out last year?

  25. capitaloffense says: Oct 18, 2012 12:21 PM

The Giants weren’t able to shut down the original RG3 (Rex Grossman III). Good luck shutting this one down. This is exactly how the G-Men got that arse swept last year. You gave us bulletin board material. I believe it was Antrel Rolle and Brandon Jacobs last time. They said we were soft and they would beat us 99 times out of 100. So far they are 0-2 with 98 more games to play.

  26. krusher33 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:23 PM

Well now they done it. They both ran their mouths and 1 of them going to look like an idiot this Sunday wishing they could take back what they said.

  27. mike41april says: Oct 18, 2012 12:23 PM

RG3 is no Prince Amukamara. Try to dump him in the ice bath and he’ll leave JPP on his back wondering which way he went.

  28. cincyorangenblack says: Oct 18, 2012 12:24 PM

Bengals didn’t seem to have a problem stopping him. Weak-sauce read option, yes….Bob Griffin, nope. Kid got jacked up all day long, but to his credit he was bouncing back upeach time. The problem here though, is that the Giants D-Line is more mature and deeper than the Bengals….i predict concussion #2 for Big Bob

  29. bambam4 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:28 PM

just another ignorant defensive lineman running his mouth. no one on the giants – either the defense or the offense – has RG3’s speed. That is a fact. RGIII is Olympic caliber fast. If JPP or any other defender is behind him, it is going to stay that way.

  30. metgiantfan31 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:29 PM

@bigjdve im pretty sure that cam newton is like RGIII and howd that one turn out

  31. jskins83 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:29 PM

oh yeah cuz he has two fumbles and a pick all the time he has two picks all year and one lost fumble vick and eli both have probably done that in one game this year

  32. bobbyhoying says: Oct 18, 2012 12:32 PM

I wish the Eagles were playing in the Meadowlands this weekend. It always gives them a boost when the Giants choke there. As for the Giants stopping rushers, I wonder what LeSean McCoy would say about that?

  33. azr1988 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:34 PM

I’d like JPP to name a single quarterback he’s ever faced with speed like RGIII. Don’t say Vick, RGIII’s faster (Current Vick, not 2004-05 Vick).

  34. dmaq1 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:36 PM

This D-Line isn’t nearly as dominant as it used to be… which means I don’t care what they say nearly as much as I used to.

The Rams, Dolphins, Texans and Seahawks all have better DLines at this point.

That’s a quick drop off in a short amount of time…

  39. snargi01 says: Oct 18, 2012 12:45 PM

  40. east96st says: Oct 18, 2012 12:45 PM

I love JPP. Great player. But, JPP, you should know by now that NO ONE runs to YOUR side. They all go directly at Osi. Why work at trying to beat you, when Osi takes himself out of every running play by failing to contain his side?

The Giants have faced Cam, Vick and Kaepernick so far. They have 6 games of film of RG3. In addition they by far have the most athletic front Washington has seen. Too many here are not respecting the champs again. The last time JPP spoke like this was before the GB game last year – don’t forget what happened. Bradshaw talked last week about SF’s run defense. Sorry but the Gmen are scared of no one. That’s way different than disrespecting RG3, SF or anyone else. The Gmen have issues when they don’t respect their opponets and RG3 so far his given plenty to respect. JPP and company are just excited to show the NFL how to defend RG3.

  47. realdealsteel says: Oct 18, 2012 1:00 PM

Last year at this time, The Giants had virtually nothing to say about the Redskins because, truth be told, the Redskins were never perceived as a threat. Even thou the redskins swept the Giants, the Giants just shrugged their shoulders and kept going.

Now the Giants players are talking so that tells you that now, they perceive the Redskins as a threat. So just on general principal and perception, the Redskins are better then last year. And JPP can talk all he wants to but if RGIII gets to that corner first, he’s gone. And not one Giants will catch him.

    Don’t even try it.

Dominated by Dallas? The Cowboys blew their entire roll to win that game. The Giants sleepwalked through 2 1/2 quarters and still were a 3rd down stop away from tying it.

And no, it wasn’t just “one game”. The Giants wrote the book on how to beat SF. They did the same on how to contain Vick — now everyone does it.

The schmucks who keep talking about what Washington did last year, as if it has ANY bearing on this game Sunday, are even worse than SF fans.

    metgiantfan31:

Cam has alot of talent, and while RGIII and Cam both are similar, I personally believe that RGIII has alot more talent overall.

When I say this, I don’t mean just running, he is faster than Cam but not as big so he can’t take the beating Cam can.

Cam did pretty well in the first 6 games of last year. However RGIII a completion % around 12% higher and a QB rating 22 pts higher. So take away the running and RGIII is making a bigger difference in the passing game.

He is also making better decisions as is attested to the fact that he has 7 less interceptions in the same amount of time.

The Giants stand a really good chance to win, however that being stated they should still be careful because RGIII has been showing that he has innate ability to make plays that keep his team close.

  71. notthathand says: Oct 18, 2012 2:05 PM

The only two things I don’t like about him are the arm sock and the visor. Other than that, the dude is a real breath of fresh air and I’m actually happy that the Skins finally have somebody to build around. I just hope he doesn’t turn into a diva. The NFL and especially the NFC East is so much better when the Skins are relevant. That said, I do hope that JPP introduces Mr. Griffin to NFC East divisional football the way that they introduced Romo after filling in for Bledsoe.

    ————–

HA. Based upon what, exactly? Do you even watch film? The Giants don’t even run the same looks that they did last year. Even a novice film watcher would note, “Hey, how does Antrel Rolle make those interceptions???” and realize that his responsibilities at safety have shifted since Phillips went down. He’s actually able to truly play free safety and not rover.

That alone should tell you that last year is LAST YEAR.

But given that we have Rivers healthy, and Boley actually able to play more rover and not SAM, where he is out of position, pretty much negates any of the things the Skins will try to do past the sticks. Griffin will run, and may even get 50 yards rushing. The Skins also feature the second worst secondary in football, to the Patriots, and allowed noodle-armed Matthew Melt to drive right down the field on them.

And you think they are going to stop Eli and the boys ha?

Hey JPP these are not same Redskins from last year who beat you both times. And don’t forget about the other runner Alfred Morris who’s strong as a bull. Game will be decided by a field goal and my upset pick of the week.

No denying the Giants have tremendously talented defensive line, but as you said facts are facts: The Redskins sacked Eli ten times last year, the Giants sacked Rex Grossman, possibly the least mobile QB in NFL history, eight times last year, despite the Redskins missing four of their starting linemen in their second meeting. No one’s saying JPP is overrated, just that Trent Williams and the Redskins line as a whole are very underrated.

  89. skinsfanwill says: Oct 18, 2012 3:18 PM

Funny how everyone talks about RG3 running the ball when in fact he is a great pocket passer with the ability to run. His QB rating is higher than everyone else’s in the league. You love Tebow, who is a running QB, but hate RG3. I don’t get it. This kid is talented and we all know it. He is not Mike Vick, not Cam Newton, and Not Tebow. He is better than all of them. And he will only be better when surrounded with quality, veteran receivers.

  90. szwhtsup123 says: Oct 18, 2012 3:19 PM

Love #90 and all that he brings, but this is a division game at home and after a huge win – typically when the Giants don’t show up. I’m hoping Tom has them ready and would rather JPP focus on the game than trash talk. If RG3 thinks he’s going to run all over the field in the NFL and against this defense, so be it. I think he’ll take dumb chances to prove something and this D will pound him good, knocking him out of Monday’s photo shoot.
The Big Blue train keeps a rollin’…….

Would somebody please remind this dude that the Redskins beat them TWICE last year. With REX GROSSMAN as the quarterback. You guys haven’t beaten the ‘Skins since 2010. Beat us first and THEN start running your mouth, not the other way around.

It’s a good thing that the Giants are as good as they are with doing fake injuries in order to slow down the opposing offense. Maybe, JPP, after either RG3 or Morris run past you, you can pretend to pull a muscle yourself so that you can prevent the next play from occurring so quickly after the last one.

  94. justintuckrule says: Oct 18, 2012 3:39 PM

The sweep last year did MUCH more for the Giants than the Skins. Let’s take a look:

    1) Sweep forced us to run the table. Thanks for that!

    2) Sweep put you at No. 5 in the draft instead of #2. Had we swept you like we’ve done a million times prior, you’d wouldn’t have had to trade your next 10 drafts to move up. Enjoy throwing to Pierre’s time capsule (errr, inflamed foot capsule) the next 3 years instead of a bona fide No. 1 for RGIII to grow with.

    3) You gave Coughlin something to rally the troops around. That’s bad news for you. Ask SF.

So…really….We THANK you for sweeping us last year.

  95. hail74 says: Oct 18, 2012 3:41 PM

I understand not alot of people have actually seen RG3 play they just base their opinions on the fact that he can run and is fast. However people need to understand he can throw too and his run threat pulls in a LB that may normally be in coverage or force a DE to keep contain instead of rush. RG3 is leading in comp% and before you think of saying thats because he only throws screens and dumpoffs his avg per att is also among tops @ 8.3 compared to say eli @7.9

  96. brooklyndoingit11 says: Oct 18, 2012 3:57 PM

That’s the nonsense I’m talking about so sit down enjoy your Kool-Aid and relax. What a Joke! anybody that knows an inch ounce about football knows Eli makes more downfield passes than Bob, yes he throws a lot of screens those avg per is a miss leading stat… Flat out Joke!

They will contain Morris. That’s the least of their concerns. SF has an infinitely better offensive line and Frank Gore, tons of injuries later and all, is better than Morris. They shut him down.

They really backed that up didnt they? At the end of the day neither teams fan base should be predicting a blow out and as a skins fan i have no issue with JPP saying what he said. For someone who isn’t a Giants fan you’re sure hugging their nuts pretty tight.

And RGIII doesn’t throw that many screens, mainly slants, 10 or 12 yard in and out routes and of course the big shots down field.

  103. demo1984 says: Oct 18, 2012 5:18 PM

RGIII better enjoy his early success. The Vikings had him held to 62 yards on 12 carrries for over 3 and a half quarters until the last long run so its not like he was running for 8, 10, 12 yards a pop. With each week that passes there is more game film on him and the Redskins college offense. That division II offense will only work for so long then we will see how good he really is. Cam Newton ran like a wild man last season and look at him now this season with a 16 games of film on him.
I like the guy but lets see what happens when he is contained in the pocket and forced to be a NFL QB.

  104. pdillon1 says: Oct 18, 2012 5:20 PM

Someone better tell JPP that he’s not talking to Prince Akumura and RGIII ain’t going in no ice tub.

RGIII isn’t just fast…he has Olympic, world class speed at a position where he has the ball on every play. Only a handful of teams have the team speed on defense to keep RGIII in check and the Giants ain’t one of them.

@ steelers4835: RGIII is ruining the QB position, you say.

I’m sure your football knowledge is far superior to that of people like Jon Gruden, John Madden, and many other pro coaches who would strongly disagree with you. They say that he is redefining the position for the future of what the professional QB will become. And, if you’d rather not have a guy who can stand in the pocket and complete 70% of his passes while still being a threat to outrun everyone to the end zone, then I’d say you are in the minority.

Quit watching just highlight reels and watch a full Redskins game with Griffin at QB. You’ll see his leadership, poise, confidence in running the offense, his accurate passing, and oh, by the way, his world class speed. He is not merely a running QB, but he is a complete NFL QB who just happens to be also a very gifted runner.

    ______
Some would say it’s pretty crazy how many people thumbs up the idea that Robert Griffin runs every play, when clearly that just means they have not actually seen him play yet.

I’m sure everybody already knows that the guy who “runs every play”/”is only a running quarterback”/etc. is 3rd in the league in quarterback rating and leads the league in completion percentage, so I won’t bother repeating it here.

So far this year Griffin has passed 161 times and rushed 55 times. I can’t tell you how many of those were designed runs and how many were simply playmaking opportunism, but I can give you the breakdown for the Minnesota game, which seems to have been the adrenaline needle to the chest of the We Hate Griffin movement.

In the Minnesota game Griffin rushed 13 times. Two of those were designed runs, meaning that the other eleven were broken passing plays. Griffin had a choice, either to run for a couple yards or throw the ball out of bounds.

What’s confusing is why it is so offensive to some people that Griffin is capable of running for those yards. If Tom, or Peyton, or Eli had his athleticism they would do exactly the same thing, it’s simply the smart play for a quarterback to make.

I want to wrap things up, but basically what’s totally ridiculous is the “damned if you, damned if you don’t” paradox Griffin haters have him trapped in.

If he runs, he’s doing “sports movie fantasy stuff” and will never be an effective quarterback and is ruining football.

If, instead of running, he tries to force passes into triple coverage; takes the sack; or throws the ball away; he’s soft, a bad decision maker, and a bad quarterback.

If he makes himself into a pure pocket passer, Shanahan is not playing to Griffin’s strengths; Donovan McNabb is proven right (I don’t think anybody wants to see that happen); and Shanahan is a bad coach and Griffin was a waste of draft picks.

Can someone please enlighten the world as to whether there’s any scenario in which Griffin can avoid being the worst thing that’s ever happened to professional football? Because looking at things from your perspective I just don’t see it.

all this talk about rg3. He’s one person. the giants have a TEAM. the redskins have one person. Is 1 person going to beat the super bowl champions? It’s possible, but unlikely.

you all can talk about rg3. but the story of this game will be the giants offense rolling over the redskins defense. theres only one weak link on both sides in this game: washington’s defense. and it’s the worst in the NFL. they dont have a prayer in stopping NY’s offence.

Because they are a better team – pretty basic really.

That and they beat the last 2 NFL MVPs in Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady en route to a 2nd Super Bowl since 2007 – maybe that carries more credibility than 2 upset losses in 2011?
