Getty ImagesA 77-yard touchdown pass to Victor Cruz with just over a minute to play kept Robert Griffin III from beating the Giants in his first NFC East game, but it didn’t keep the Giants from being impressed by the Redskins rookie quarterback.
It was the first time that the Giants defense got a chance to see Griffin up close and they gave him a harder time than some other opponents. They sacked Griffin four times, forcing a fumble on one of those plays, and intercepted him once. Despite that, Griffin led a drive that had Washington in position to win the game in the final minutes and left the Giants impressed by what he can do on the football field during the 27-23 win.
“I’m really mad at the football gods for putting him in the NFC East,” Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, who picked up his first sack of the season, said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. “He’s going to be a headache.”
“Let me tell you something, that guy is flat-out unbelievable,” defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who also had a sack, said, via Mike Garafolo of USA Today.
Griffin finished the day 20-of-28 for 258 yards and two touchdowns. He had a third one called back because of an illegal shift penalty in the first quarter and added 89 rushing yards. That wasn’t enough to get him a win, but it sounds like he left the Giants pretty impressed anyway.
