Pete Carroll chides Harbaugh for complaints about officiating

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll directs his team against the San Francisco 49ers during their NFL football game in San Francisco Reuters

Before the 49ers’ Week Six game against the Giants, San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh lashed out at New York offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.  Harbaugh claimed that Gilbride’s complaint about 49ers defensive end Justin Smith holding offensive lineman was an “outrageous, irrational statement” with a goal to “both criticize and influence officiating.”

And so, after the Niners’ Week Seven win over the Seahawks, Harbaugh complained about the extent to which Seattle defensive backs were making contact down the field with San Fran receivers, via a passive-aggressive request to the NFL for guidance as to what is and isn’t allowed.

On Monday, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll reminded Harbaugh of his prior words.

“Wasn’t it just a couple weeks ago when they were talking about not doing things like that?” Carroll told Brock & Salk on ESPN 710 in Seattle.  “The Giants, Kevin Gilbride, or something like that?  You know, I thought there was something about that, you know?  Where we don’t go out and express our concerns and all.”

Carroll also addressed Harbaugh’s underlying concern.

“I think this was a very normal game for us in terms of how we played, and I’m surprised he felt like the receivers were so overwhelmed,” Carroll said.  “I thought our guys did a good job.  There’s always gonna be some calls that you can look at.  But our guys played good, solid, hard football.  And, you know, Vernon Davis didn’t get the ball and their receivers didn’t do much, Randy [Moss] got one.  I’m sure there’s a little frustration on their part.”

Carrol thinks nothing will come of the request from Harbaugh.

“If the officials look at it, they won’t have anything to even look at,” Carroll said.  “And I don’t think they even need to.  It’s a regular game.  Our penalties have really been going in the right direction, if you look at it. . . .  I don’t a guy should be able to speak out and go ahead and cause an investigation.  It’s too easy.  I don’t think it’s gonna happen.”

We don’t think it’ll happen, either.  But Harbaugh’s goal likely wasn’t to launch an investigation.  His goal was to both criticize and influence officiating in anticipation of the rematch between the two teams.

Kevin Gilbride would be proud.

Why would Pete Carroll say any differently? This is the guy who reacted like he won the Superbowl and gloated when referees handed his team a victory they didn’t earn.

  2. comeonnowguys says: Oct 22, 2012 2:28 PM

I’m so glad Harbaugh followed Carroll into Carroll’s division to beat him twice a year.

I know, I know, that’s not his main reason. It’s just a happy side effect.

Harbaugh – you won the game. So shut up.

  5. jaymc1988 says: Oct 22, 2012 2:29 PM

of course carroll is coming to refs aid..since the refs came to his aid a few weeks ago, only right that they have eachothers backs..

I try to cheer for the Seahawks at times, being a fan of Russell Wilson @ Wisconsin, I want him to do good.

The coach makes it nearly impossible for me to do. Running around after MNF a few weeks ago like he won the superbowl after getting a gift. Leaving USC hanging after being caught.

  7. trollaikman8 says: Oct 22, 2012 2:33 PM

Harbaugh is a pathetic human being to make Carroll sound logical & sane.

You won the game Harbaugh. Go away.
Pay more attention to the NY Giant videotape.

In other news: Pete Carroll is unable to beat Jim Harbaugh at anything.

  9. killface4prez says: Oct 22, 2012 2:35 PM

After his shameful display during the GB/SEA Monday night game – in which he hovered within 6 inches of the official as he was deciding whether to overturn the call or not – I don’t really care to hear any morality lessons regarding influencing officials from Stinky Pete Carroll.

  10. mtchainsmoker says: Oct 22, 2012 2:35 PM

Pete Carroll is attempting to influence officiating by drawing attention to Jim Harbaugh’s attempt to influence officiating by drawing attention to Kevin Gilbride’s attempt to influence officiating.

Thats how big of a whiner Jim Harbaugh is. He wins a game and he STILL is crying. Hes a disgrace to the NFL.

  12. hawkforlife says: Oct 22, 2012 2:37 PM

When he’s an old man Harbaugh will have to have corrective surgery to remove that whiny scowl. Or maybe that’s how he wants to be remembered.

  13. ninerdynasty says: Oct 22, 2012 2:39 PM

Of course the Refs did a great job..!! just like in the game against GB.. they were excellent to pete’s standards..

  14. mattsffrd says: Oct 22, 2012 2:47 PM

Uh, Pete, did we watch a different game? Your players got away with murder. Alex’s facemask nearly got ripped off at one point with no call.

  15. 10kmp says: Oct 22, 2012 2:48 PM

I am not a 49ers fan, but I like Harbaugh. I enjoy watching his teams play, and I feel like he’s without question one of the top 5 coaches in football (college or pro). Having said that, his act is starting to wear thin IMO. His odd statements/complaints/pressers are a slight bit reminiscent of the guy who preceded him in SF, the difference being Harbaugh is a winner and Singletary is not (as a head coach at least). I think Harbaugh might simply be wound too tight, might be too high strung, to last very long in this league.

  16. waxthat says: Oct 22, 2012 2:50 PM

If you want to know about Pete Carroll’s character, re watch the press conference after this game. Carroll and Harbaugh knowingly don’t like one another but Pete can’t resort the the fact that his team decisively lost to the 49ers.

And yes, after watching and rewatching the game, the Seahawks corners were all over the Niners WR’s and should have been called for pass interference on most passing plays. Poorly officiated game, to say the least.

Personally I think Harbaughs personality and ‘crazy’ actions on the field enable the referees to dislike him and lean calls against him. Harbaugh needs to gain some composure on the sidelines. If he does, he could be one of the greatest ever.

Carroll needs to retire and crawl back in to his hole of lies, cheating and all around deceitful behavior. The guy is a joke.

  17. zn0rseman says: Oct 22, 2012 2:50 PM

Every Seahawks game this season has had horrible, one-sided officiating in favor of the Seahawks.

So it’s not surprising that Sneaky Pete would be defending the officials.

  18. intergalacticbronco says: Oct 22, 2012 2:52 PM

And deservedly so. I like Jim Harbaugh but it does seem like he is becoming more of a whiner with each passing game.

I saw the entire niners game and those two CBs were mugging the receivers most of the time beyond 5 yard line. Without that, this one is a rout.

  23. thraiderskin says: Oct 22, 2012 3:11 PM

Both of these coaches need to shut their mouths about the refs. If they have such a huge issue with how a game was officiated, I’m sure there is a more mature manner to go about it. The ONLY coach who has had any reason to blast a ref was McCarthy after the Seattle debacle, otherwise, I don’t ever remember seeing another call deciding the final outcome of a game. Both of these guys have become some of the most unprofessional sacks of air (obviously there are more).

  24. strikeback52 says: Oct 22, 2012 3:11 PM

Haha chides Harbaugh…Stinky Pete can’t chide Harbaugh he is too busy putting his defensive lines psyche back together. Pete worry about your defense they keep saying they are best of the nfc west, eventually the play of your d backs will back fire, and obviously stopping the run is not their strong suit after Gore runs 6 times up the gut for 90 plus.

  25. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Oct 22, 2012 3:12 PM

In the last 8 contests between Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh (including Stanford/USC and SF/Seattle) Harbaugh has won 7 of the 8 contests. Where I come from we call that “OWNING”

  26. m070z17 says: Oct 22, 2012 3:14 PM

Harbaugh is simply asking the league what is and isn’t allowed so he has it in writing that his players can be allowed to hold beyond 5 yds too. Maybe the niners will be allowed to grab and twist quarter backs facemasks too!

  27. mjdkid100 says: Oct 22, 2012 3:20 PM

Exactly what they did to the Pats as well. It was a joke what the refs let go. Thats why they ended up settling for FG’s twice in the 2nd half.

  28. seahawks4alltime says: Oct 22, 2012 3:25 PM

In the National Football League all 32 teams live and die by the calls made by the refs. And millions of fans week in and week out complain our backsides off about those calls. But a little honest would do us all a LOT of good. Anyone who says the calls always go the Seahawks way clearly isn’t watching the games. And anyone who says the Seahawks have not been gifted a few calls has also not be watching the games.

But the important thing to remember is that the same can be said about all 32 teams. Whether it’s the Packers/Seahawks Monday night fiasco or the any other game by any two teams, it doesn’t matter who is officiating – There are going to be blown calls, no calls, good calls, and bad calls…

As a Seahawks fan, it’s no surprise that so many people hate the Hawks. Every team has haters. And as a Seahawks fan you get used to seeing it. I just wish that more football fans would show a bit more honesty and realism. And that goes for the coaches and players too.

If anything, the Seahawks’ dropped passes in SF territory all game is the reason that SF didn’t get routed.

And hey, if you commend Harbaugh for trying to get the refs to feel sympathetic towards his team, then you should revere Carroll for already pulling it off. That is, if you truly believe Carroll’s Seahawks receive favorable treatment in their games.

    Carry on, nerds.

  30. techfootball says: Oct 22, 2012 3:26 PM

Hey let go back to that Monday night game, ref said he caught it, they reviewed it and that ref said he caught it, NFL Office reviews it and said the ref’s made the right call on that pass. So I’ll just go with all you guy’s that say he didn’t. RIGHT. Pete wasn’t standing there so he could see what the ref could see, so why wouldn’t he be happy with the win. Harbaugh really just looked like a big cry baby on the side lines the other night and it sounds like he is off the field also. His player were breaking the rules just as much as any Seahawk player was. The 49ers QB can manage a game but he can’t really take over a game and win it. I think in a very short time Wilson will be able to take over a game and he will help win a lot of them. The 49ers won’t last long the Hawks are up and coming team. Over all 49ers just suck. After Montana and Young they just haven’t had a real good QB. Over all the 49ers day’s are numbered and it will be a low number like 8 and 8. Got to love the HAWKS..

  31. packerbadger says: Oct 22, 2012 3:28 PM

Is this the same Carroll that ran around like a 5th grade cheerleader after the refs GAVE them the game against the pack?

  32. tallglasowater says: Oct 22, 2012 3:28 PM

Yeah and take away that packer game winning touchdown that game the Seahawks would have beat the packers 7-6 with fair calls on both sides if that pass interference call wouldn’t have been made against Chris Clemons. Bad calls all game against Seattle and Green Bay. How does that make Pete Carroll a cheater he didn’t make that call he was supporting his football team like he should be with all that energy and enthusiasm on the sideline. His team is playing some good football with one of the best defenses in the league and it has kept them in games all year long including all of their losses they haven’t been blown out any game this year they’ll all been close to the last minute. There are gonna be rookie mistakes by Russell Wilson along the way but with his maturity and work ethic it’s going to start paying off. This team will be neck and neck with San Fran up till the end of the season but that’s fine we can continue being the underdogs in the league and that’s good they can continue playing with chips on their shoulders. Harbough is an idiot somebody get him a pacifier on the sideline.

  33. pfitzhugh says: Oct 22, 2012 3:32 PM

Pete Carroll is the most classless coach in history. He violated NCAA rules and left USC before they were penalized, then arrogantly gloated after the refs handed him the game rather than just take the gift for what it was. I won’t miss him when he eventually leaves.

You should just be thankful that you got gifted a game (GB game).

I can see you have very limited thinking ability.
Your lousy receivers can’t hang on to passes and that is quite all right and our receivers got mugged like crazy and that is also quite all right by you.

And to the dummy that said the NINERS suck and the seachickens are up and coming, Pete carrol will never succeed! Especially with harbaugh coaching the NINERS! 44. goldrush36 says: Oct 22, 2012 4:22 PM

There are some differences. Gilbride said it before the game and Harbaugh was spot on with the intent even if he did way overreact about it. He was ASKED about the contact by reporters AFTER the game. He didn’t go into the game saying hey Browner and Sherman like to push the rules. Evident by Browner’s 19 penalties last year. I think Petey is just upset he’s a whopping 1-6 against Harbaugh.

Already there really, with smith as the QB you won’t be there for long. The Defense is the only reason as you put it, already there. If you don’t have an Offense you won’t be able to win the big game. Yes the 49ers will win some games, but they just won’t win the ones that really count. The Hawks are young and fast and are going to be causing a lot of problems to your beloved niners for a long long time. Get some fresh air clear up that thing you call a brain, that way you can see and in this case read the truth. And as for Pete will never succeed he already is and it get better all the time. 55. billb49 says: Oct 22, 2012 5:00 PM

There is no equivalence between holding on the defensive line and holding or illegal contact by defensive backs. The rule is clear: no contact beyond five yards. Those db’s could have been flagged on almost every play. It’s a common call. It’s uncommon to call it on d-linemen. And you Hawks fans know this. Stop pretending Harbaugh doesn’t have a valid point. I predict that crews will start making those calls so that the game doesn’t get away from them. And then you’re all going to find out why you don’t see corners that big very often. If they can’t cheat like that, they just don’t have the quickness to stay with receivers.

Sure the NFL supported the call and then all of a sudden, the two sides came together and ended the strike. Bottom line, one of the ten worst calls in NFL history and a direct cause of a losing team being granted a win by poor officiating. As a fan, I can still be angry but fortunately, my team, the Packers, are way more mature than I am… which works out great for everyone. Go Pack Go.

“I can’t believe there’s still people complaining about the Golden Tate touchdown reception.”

No complaining here. I assume by Golden Tate touchdown reception you mean MD Jennings endzone interception? Its all water under the bridge. In any case, what this all proves is that Mike McCarthy has a great deal of class and integrity and Pete Carroll is a tool. Seahawks dont deserve Russell Wilson – he has too much class for that organization.

Please just stop. I don’t see why any of you 9ners fans have any reason to bitch about, you won the game, even if the Seahawks were “getting away with murder”. And another thing stop comparing the officiating with GB and the 49ners game. Last time I check there where replacement officials calling the GB game. Yes I will admit that it was a bad call, but comparing that game to the 49ners games is you just saying the regular refs are just as bad as their replacements. You guys came away with the win, what more can you ask for, so please just stop your really becoming annoying.

If the Harbaugh’s don’t win it all, they will go down as the two worse whiners in NFL history.
Egad, this younger one needs to have someone shut him up.
    What a jerk

  63. savilo831 says: Oct 22, 2012 6:01 PM

Most penalized team on offense maybe. The defense ain’t really that good if you consider how much contact the defensive backs get away with after 5 yards! NINERS offensive line dominated! Flat out!

  64. jibberator says: Oct 22, 2012 6:16 PM

RIIIGHT the officials wont see a thing. I never knew shoving people 20 yards down the field was a legit strategy. I guess if you’re the scumhawks it is! =)

  65. bearflagfan says: Oct 22, 2012 6:16 PM

Pete Carroll’s players everywhere loved him. Coaches follow him from job to job. Other coaches for the most part respect him. Players respect Jim Harbaugh, but nobody loves him. He bailed on Stanford before winning a Pac-10 championship, leaving his QB hanging. Only 3 coaches joined him from Stanford to the 49ers. And he has sanpaku eyes. Jim Harbaugh is all about Jim Harbaugh, all others are baggage.

  66. dr45acp says: Oct 22, 2012 6:17 PM

I would suggest that every time a receiver holds his hands up looking for a penalty flag for holding or interference that the receiver should be flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct…receiver thinks that everytime he goes down field that they are messed with….what a bunch of sissies….play the game & quit begging for a penalty flag…

  67. contrasuxbalz says: Oct 22, 2012 6:26 PM

Who cares? It will be years before the NFC West goes to the superbowl. Harbaugh and Carroll are idiots.

49ers…have been and remain irrelevant since the 80s and 90s….just go away, Hairbow….

That’s funny. Saints have been relevant for 5 of the 46 years they have been in the league. Go put the bag back on your head. Who beat the Saints in the playoffs last year? Can someone refresh my memory?

  73. aholland00 says: Oct 22, 2012 6:55 PM

I haven’t seen much of Seahawks games other then the last with the 49ers. I’m also not a hawks hater or a 49ers fan, but anyone that says those receivers weren’t being mugged under the new rules hasn’t been watching other games. Of course some penalties will be missed, but those penalties were going on all game long. And for Carroll to say it wasn’t happening is unbelievable. I actually turned the game off because of the bad officiating and that’s the first time I’ve ever done that.

  74. olympiacham says: Oct 22, 2012 7:36 PM

Wow!!! Seahawks have become relevant enough to have people hate them? Awesome.

  75. 22much4ken says: Oct 22, 2012 7:38 PM

Hey Peter Carroll why don’t you look at film and actually watch what the rest of us fans can clearly see – I hope teams start playing you cheaters the same way you play them , and I also hope somebody straightens your nose out while tackling one of your cheaters on the sideline by you !!!!

  76. jeraybo says: Oct 22, 2012 7:39 PM

Believe me–if the Harbaugh brothers lose they will find an excuse!! Thats what they do>

  77. seahawks4alltime says: Oct 22, 2012 7:42 PM

The idea that superbowls equate to relevance is a laughable one.

For example, the Saints have won a Superbowl. The Houston Texans have not. Who is more “relevant”??

Another example, The Kansas City Chiefs have won a Superbowl. The Atlanta Falcons have not. Who is more “relevant”?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won a Superbowl, the Vikings have not. Who is more relevant?

The 49ers have won 5 Superbowls. The Seahawks have not won any.

If you just go by the standings so far this year, here is your “relevance”… One game difference. 49ers stand at .714 and the Seahawks stand at .571. That’s the only relevance that matters.

  78. greysolon says: Oct 22, 2012 8:03 PM

Hmm… I wonder if Carroll’s 1-5 record against Harbaugh has anything to do with this grousing?

Already there really, with smith as the QB you won’t be there for long. The Defense is the only reason as you put it, already there. If you don’t have an Offense you won’t be able to win the big game. Yes the 49ers will win some games, but they just won’t win the ones that really count. I like up and coming it’s better than being up and slowly going away like what going to happen to the 49ers. Sorry not like, is what happening to the 49ers. The Hawks are young and fast and are going to be causing a lot of problems to your beloved niners for a long long time. Get some fresh air clear up that thing you call a brain, that way you can see and in this case read the truth. And as for Pete will never succeed he already is and it get better all the time. Only nine more game and will all come back here and see what’s happening then. Got better things to do later.=
    ====================================

Yeah the Seahawks have been a tremendous amount of trouble for the 49ers.

Tell me again, what is Seattle’s Head-to-Head record against Jim Harbaugh again? Oh yea, they haven’t beaten him and the 49ers the last 3 times.

Judging by the number of articles on each team, I’d say the Saints.

Really? You wanna talk about bailing on your college team in defense of Pete Carroll? Look what he did to USC and look at where he left them?

This just in, ALL teams start the year with ONE goal, to win the Super Bowl.

That’s what it’s all about and anything else is considered a failure.

The only thing laughable here is you.

  85. truninerfan49 says: Oct 23, 2012 11:07 AM

as much as I hate the Seahawks and Carroll, what he said was right.

  86. blu4l1fe says: Oct 23, 2012 11:59 AM

I do not like Harbaugh and his comments and antics really makes it that much easier to really hate him.

With that being said, I can’t recall, at least at my short life of being a football fan, of other coaches who talks so much crap about other teams and coaches, but at the same time does the same crap that he complains about.

Come on, even in winning, as you have showed last year at the end of your game against the Lions, you can’t even be gracious and humble. For this, and this alone, I don’t believe any team coached by him will experience much success.

  87. khayes31 says: Oct 23, 2012 12:23 PM

huge seahawks fan but i can not stand Jim Harbuargh foaming out of the mouth and acting like has snorted and 8 ball of cocaine i can not stand the niners and the we are better than you mentally than they bitch and moan about refs?
shut up and play football. take the win you are given and move on the to the next week.
harbaurgh is always on the field shut up and do the job you are paid to do you are not paid to ref the game.

    hawk fan

the the media attention the hawks have gotten this year. makes all of you look hilarious

  88. techfootball says: Oct 23, 2012 2:33 PM

SF fan are just not good sports. From everything I have read so far they are poor sports. It’s one thing to enjoy your team beating another team in the same division but come on. I was dumb just looking at what you guy’s said and then I let myself get involved in your dumb ass bad mouthing. The hate that comes off this site is just not good and I really hope no kids read the crap that being written. This hole team bashing it really doesn’t prove anything. I guess the real point I was trying to make in the end, is reading all the crap the SF fan are writing well it’s just not true because Pete and his Seahawks are going to beat the crap out of the 49ers in nine weeks so I’ll come back then and listen to guy cry some more. Hey 49ers fan have a good year. Not really.

  89. allidoiswin55 says: Oct 24, 2012 9:39 AM

Jims just being Jim. What’s worse than a sore lower? Am even sore winner. I find it funny how the dominate PHYSICAL 49ERS were so clearly on the other this game against the Hawks.

Truth be told the HAWKS delivered the punches that game. Those drops killed drives and momentum and points. The Gore runs were beautiful. It was a schemed trap the Hawks couldn’t pick up on. But even those were gapping holes. Truth is that the Hawks lost that game with mistakes.

It was nice to see the Hawks hit the 9’ers in the mouth. Usually the 9’ers do the hitting but they were RAN OVER. Gore had holes. Lynch made yards through and over your players

I fully expect the Hawks to BLOWOUT the niners at home. Wait in see Hawks win by over 17.. Come see me then?
