You know who wanted Tebow in Jacksonville? Lynyrd Skynyrd did

Erie Concert AP

The most important and influential cultural force in the history of the city of Jacksonville has now spoken out on the second-most.

Johnny Van Zant, the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, told Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel that his hometown Jaguars should have done everything in their power to sign hometown boy Tim Tebow.

Of course he did.

(You’ll now pardon me for 13 minutes while I fish out my lighter and cue up the live version of “Freebird”).

Van Zant’s reasoning for the move was as sound as you would expect.

“They would have filled the stadium with chicks alone,” Van Zant said with a laugh.

The idea of the Tebow faithful mingling with the Skynyrd crowd in the parking lot where they hold “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” boggles the mind. There would be mullets and WWJD bracelets. Water would be turned into Jack Daniels. And there would be a three-hour wait for a table at the Waffle House after the game.

Then they could all head over to one of our beautiful beaches or a round of golf at TPC Sawgrass.

Why wasn’t Vince McMahon all over this? Pairing a legendary band and making a fake NFL QB into a fake wrestler? Can’t you just hear the crowds chanting GOD BLESS YOU as Tebow jumps from the top turnbuckle? Can we still make this happen?

Still miss the heart and soul of that band. RIP Ronnie Van Zant.

More like the “aging and second-string replacements for the most important and influential cultural force in the history of the city of Jacksonville has now spoken out on the second-most.”

Skynyrd fan since before I was born, but sometimes good things die. You don’t see Paul and Ringo recruiting Pete Lennon and Frank Harrison and calling themselves the Beatles. It’s almost an insult to the original band that “Lynyrd Skynyrd” is still around.

As opposed to losers like shadcan who else wanted Tebow in JAX, that would be ME. I would be down there for games if he was there. Instead they are irrelevant and losing. Who cares about Blaine Gabbert. Not going to fill seats.

    Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tebow > Gant

Seriously, Ronnie was a great front man and is truly missed by many.

This version of Skynyrd just doesn’t cut it for me.

As long as Skynyrd doesn’t do the pre game flyover, I’m cool with that!

  22. jimeejohnson says: Oct 28, 2012 12:57 PM

Today’s Skynyrd are major poseurs. They suck.

What’s funny is you try to make it sound like Red-Necks only live in J-ville. Trust men, have you seen the crowds at the Giants and Jets games, full of Red-Necks, I’ve been to at least 25 of the 32 cities for NFL games. You know what, Red-Necks at every one of them. So why don’t you get off your bum and do some real reporting, I’ve got a story line, Darin Gantt is stealing money from his employer, cus he sure isn’t earning it.
