Rex Ryan’s sticking with Mark Sanchez

It was an ugly, ugly day for the Jets offense on Sunday, but it wasn’t ugly enough to convince Rex Ryan to make a change at quarterback.

Ryan said from the podium of his postgame press conference that Sanchez will remain the team’s starting quarterback because he gives the team the best chance to win. Sanchez didn’t do much to give the Jets a chance to win in the 30-9 loss to the Dolphins, completing 28-of-54 passes for 283 yards to go with a touchdown, interception and lost fumble. That touchdown came in the fourth quarter when the Jets were already down 27-3 and his earlier play was studded with the kind of inaccuracy and inability to make plays under pressure that have popped up in half his starts this season.

All of that comes with Tim Tebow standing on the sideline and doing very little offensively other than standing on the sideline. Ryan isn’t switching to Tebow during the coming bye week and he said after the game that he never thought about benching his quarterback.

“I just never thought it was the time to do it. Mark’s our quarterback,” Ryan said.

Ryan’s sticking with Sanchez after another poor game. His job security could wind up being seriously impacted by that loyalty.

  1. So the “Carnival Barker” is staying with Sanchez. LOL

The Dolphins are a lot better than people give them credit for.

  2. I just don’t get it. Mark Sanchez was ATROCIOUS today. At times, it looked like he was looking to be taken out. He was extremely inaccurate and had no pocket awareness at all.

But here is Rex again saying he is sticking with Sanchez. If Rex truly believes Sanchez is the answer for them at QB, now and into the future, then he should be fired. He is blinded to how bad Sanchez is because all he remembers is winning games with him 2 years ago. He is clearly not living in the “now”.

At this point, any other coach would consider giving Tebow a shot. Yes, he is inaccurate, but if anything else, he is exciting. The Jets could definitely use a little excitement and it is clear to everyone but Rex Ryan that Sanchez is done as a starter.

  3. Why did they trade for Tebow again after increasing Sanchez’s salary? After he was butt hurt when the jets failed in their pursuit of Peyton Manning.

  4. Rex looked a little teary-eyed to me. Maybe he hit the bong before the press conference or he knows it’s hit the fan. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Sadly, I blame the GM more than the coach. This team is a mess.

  5. Here’s where bad decisions to spend $4M on press hype come back to crush the Jets:

Sanchez truly deserves a benching… problem is they don’t have an actual backup QB…. Tebow is an actual joke.

Sanchez stays no matter what… not out of loyalty, but because he’s the only guy.

  6. Tony Sparano is a terrible offensive co-ordinator.
He was hopeless with the Dolphins, that’s why he
was fired, and nothing has changed. Tebow came in twice today, and that’s it?? What do you have him for?? To decorate the sidelines, I guess. Nice waste of money, when the whole team sucks. He couldn’t be worse.

  7. Halfway into his first season, Tannehill is already better than Sanchez. The weird thing was that Matt Moore looked a lot better, too.

Four seasons to develop, and it looks like this: Sanchez is wildly inconsistent, where receivers have to dig the ball almost off the turf or up high with acrobatic leaps, so even having a sub-fifty-percent completion average is a gift. The only less accurate QB in the league I can think of is Tebow.

  8. Good, Rex. Stick with him as long as you want. The more you play him, the more we, the rest of the NFL, win ballgames.

Sanch still looks like a rookie in the pocket. I’d rather have any other starting QB in the league. I don’t believe Tebow is the guy, but you got to give him a shot. Hey NYJ, hit the draftboards…

  9. I’m a Phins fan…and a huge Tebow fan (Florida Gator), however, he is not a better pure QB than Sanchez is. I wish he were…but he is not.

What WOULD be effective, is to get these two on the field at the same time. When Tebow comes in currently, you know he is either a decoy or is going to run the option read he ran at Florida. Find a way to get him them in the backfield together and you will have a dual passing threat. That should help with their run game.

As much as I enjoy the circus in NY, it is very obvious that both Ryan and Sporano have no idea how to use Tebow properly.

  10. Fire Rex, quite on Sanchez and trade revis ! Rebuild get a pick for a broken revis! It’s obvious that Rex is not a championship head coach has no idea about the offensive side of the ball, stubborn and reminds me of singletary and Nolan as head coaches, good defensive minds but don’t know enough about offense! I hope that the jets owner sees this!

  11. Something has to be going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about. Either Rex loves Sanchise to a fault or absolutely despises Tebow or something; it just doesn’t make sense that they would trade for him, and then not use him when the Sanchise is still struggling and is not going to get better.

  12. Tony Soprano (Sporano) will be sleeping with the fishes during the bye week! I’m sorry he already slept there, and they threw him back and the Jets took the bait.

  13. Tebow didn’t just do nothing on the sideline. He also did nothing on the field as personal protector, allowing the blocked punt and defensive touchdown. Maybe they should be thinking about not using him on special teams, never mind as quarterback.

  14. Why do nfl teams recycle offensive, defensive coaches? They stink one place and go to another and stink there! The nfl isn’t that hard to figure out. Without a qb you will never win a Super Bowl ( unless u are Trent Dilfer) the jets and about 20 other teams can not win a Super Bowl wih there current qb

  15. Atleast we won’t have to watch any of the ESPN talk shows tomorrow…nothing buy Tebow stories.

  16. can somebody tell me why other than being a parcells guy why sporano is so highly thought of? he had a terrible offense in miami and now a even worse one with the jets. they knew what they were getting in Tebow and any smart coach would use the bye week to make the changes needed for him to take over and try do what he did in denver last year. it was not always pretty but he got the broncos to the playoffs and won. hate all you want but that team with the same players sucked untill Tebow took over.

  17. Sanchez is terrible but why have your terrible QB (on a day when he was horrible from the very first attempt) throw 54 passes? Green still averaged over 5 yards a carry today but got only 15 carries. Yeah, I get that they were behind all day, but given how Sanchez was playing, you can’t tell me that sticking with the running game and trying to work their way back into the game that way wouldn’t have better than series after series of Sanchez missing receivers.

  18. Ryan sticking with the Titanic.

Did you watch the game? Green popped a lucky one for 36 yards. He otherwise had 14 carriers for 41 yards, or a 2.9 average.

  21. Hey, you know what’s missing here ……????

All those loud-mouthed NY Jets fans!!!!!!

Where’s nyeffingjets today, or that bleedinggreen guy, or that dude jennings??????

Why aren’t they on here talking about how great their Jets are, their 3-5 Jets who took a 30-9 PASTING by the freaking MIAMI DOLPHINS today!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on guys, let’s hear you talking up your next Super Bowl run!

  22. I think ABC is taking a good look at the newest football player to be considered for Dancing With The Stars. After looking at Sanchez’s foot work today, he might actually WIN on DTWS, but sure as hell cannot win on a football field.

  23. I’m starting to believe that the Jets traded for Tebow so that NO ONE could play him – because Rex’s postgame comments always hint that he believes Tebow could never be the answer.

So, why would you trade for Tebow and keep him on the bench even after you’ve PROVEN to have the worst starting QB in the league? Maybe it stems from a bitterness in the last minute loss he whipped up against the Jets last season.

Is Ryan a Tebow hater? Or was the acquisition of Tebow not his choice? The real story needs to come out.

  24. Mark Sanchize is a great QB, he just has a bad supporting cast. Sexy Rexy is doing a great job with what he has and Sporano is calling a great game. Clyde Gates proved the Fins foolish today with his amazing catches and his YAC. Mike Westoff is at least a good 10 years from retirement!!! The Jets just need to go back to the uniforms they wore during the Esiason days and make Tebow a fb/te/hb. Trust me im a Fins fan!!!

  25. i’ve always thiught sanchez was better than people gave him credit for. here’s his fourth year and an opportunity to continue to follow eli’s career arc (though admittedly without the same high end). that’s not looking too likely now. (though i remember people talking about how eli would ‘never be able to do it’ at a later point in his fourth year than this.
glad to see tebow playing sparely because i think you had to give sanchez a clear shot without him.
but if that all comes to a close, let’s see what mcelroy can do. tebow is not a qb.

  28. Didn’t the Jets get another punt blocked this week? IF Timmy can’t handle that job how in the world can anyone expect him to play qb?

  29. Is ryan trying to put the lights out on Tebow’s
    NFL career?

It appears he’s putting the lights out on his own career instead.

A backup coach can get you 3 out of 8 wins with high priced players and excuses.

  30. Ryan sticking with the Titanic (Sanchez).

Gambling with the owners money again.
