As the Colts find themselves with more wins through seven games of Andrew Luck’s rookie season than they had through all 16 games of Peyton Manning’s rookie season, the team is constantly looking for ways to improve.
On Monday, the effort resulted in the termination of the employment of veteran running back Mewelde Moore.
The team has announced that Moore has been released, along with nose tackle Antonio Dixon. Their spots were filled via the elevation of cornerback Marshay Green and fullback Robert Hughes to the active roster from the practice squad. Also, cornerback Teddy Williams has been signed to the practice squad.
Dixon joined the Colts from the Eagles, where he started 10 games in 2010. Moore entered the league in 2004 as a mid-round draft pick of the Vikings. After four years in Minnesota, Moore spent four with the Steelers.
During his first season in Indy, Moore appeared in six games, with nine carries for 14 yards. By being released before the trade deadline, Moore won’t be exposed to waivers. It means that he’ll be able to pick his next team as a free agent -- and that he’ll be entitled to collect the balance of his $825,000 base salary as termination pay. If he signs with a new team, he’ll be able to keep the pay from both franchises.
