However … it’s ridiculous for NFL and college coaches to provide details on player injuries to the public. The only reason the NFL requires coaches to hand this intelligence to their opponents in advance of gameday is to help bookies set their odds. And given how pompous the NFL has been about “protecting the shield” the league does not need to be in the business of facilitating gamblers. In the past, coaches went to great lengths to ensure the opposition didn’t know the exact details of player injuries so they’d have to prepare for multiple scenarios. That’s part of competing.

The popularity of fantasy football requires that teams release a list of those who won’t be able to play, but no other details should be provided. And the names of those who will sit out shouldn’t be released until the day before the game.

Reed did not have a sore muscle or a bruise on his skin — he had a serious injury (torn labrum) that even Reed admits was affecting his play. Thus, he should have been listed on the injury report — as simple as that. Also, Harbaugh twisted the NFL’s words to manufacture a stupid argument. The NFL said “significant injuries,” not “significant players.”

Harbaugh and his staff should just take responsibility for not listing Reed (intentional or not — doesn’t matter) and move on instead of acting like babies who got caught with their hand in the cookie jar.
