Harbaugh is just trying to show his QB some support. I don’t see what the big deal is. It is what a good coach does.
And, i’m no 49er fan.
Looked like a lateral to me, but then what do i know, the music city miracle looked like a forward pass.

Bottom line is that Smith is doing a fantastic job. His stats show it, and the team’s record shows it. I just love the Smith bashers who are obviously not very educated. So if winning a super bowl is the only qualification for being a great QB, I guess we can throw a lot of HOF’ers out the window, right? Marino? Obvious loser since he has no rings, right?… You guys crack me up. Smith is doing a great job and continues to grow now that he finally has some stability and a great coach behind him. I really hope they win the super bowl to shut you guys up

You do realize that living in a city or following a team that happens to have a winning records does absolutely nothing to make you better than anyone else, right? I actually went back and watched the game. The play in question was definitely a forward pass the ball traveled a full yard forward so this should be changed and Smith should have the record. They did it for Berger in a game where no records were set, for no apparent reason other than he had no TD passes in the game. Whoever wrote the article should have looked at the play before they wrote that the score keeper got it right.

The stat obsession in todays NFL(and sports overall) drives me nuts. Who cares about records, its all about W’s and L’s. Like Brees parading around with the touchdown record on a losing team, or Cam Newton being called a Franchise QB because of a whole lot of garbage time yards.

Yes let’s all remember that Mike Single-cell was “not impressed with Willis” and had he been in charge of the draft that season, the best LB in the league would be playing somewhere else. Singletary was an awful head coach. Get that fact straight. The only thing he built was an idiotic hill at the training facility that was removed along with the stench of his crappy coaching.

@afon17 yes Alex got 2TD and did not turn the ball over and that’s all he had to do for our team to get to the SB. Why is that so hard for you to understand? If you think not turning the ball is over is easy check out Vick. When Alex is smart and efficient we win. If its not there on third down throw it away. The giants did a great job getting 2 special team turn overs that led to 10 points. We have a winning formula its working and it is because of Alex. McMahon with the 85 Bares stats sucked. He only had 2392 yards 15TD 11Int. It’s a team game not Fantasy Football.

Everybody thought Rex Ryan was the next great thing once too. Then he started playing the schedule of a team that made the playoffs instead of last place schedule and drafting his own players. Look at him now. The jury is out on JH however he does seem to bitch and moan a lot during the game just like his brother.

As far as Alex Smith goes, give the kid a break, he deserves one, if it was a forward pass, count it.

Alex Smith’s stat line is the most deceptive line I’ve seen in history. 90% of his throws were under 10 yards. Great, he can throw a five yard out; give the guy a cigar.

I’m just glad he managed to finally become an average QB before his 50th birthday. A lot of QBs who are no longer in the league wish their teams had as much patience with them as the 49ers had with Smith.

And as an aside, I love the hypocracy in the comments. He’s not a good QB b/c he throws to open receivers but when Cutler, Romo, etc. throw 5 ints trying to force the football they are terrible too.
Checking down to open WRs is what a lot of Great QBs have done: Brady, Montana, Young, etc all threw short routes to open the deep ones.
As for what Harbaugh is doing, A. who cares, did anyone know that Warner had the record? B. how is this a bad thing, Smith doesn’t care (or says he doesn’t care) about stats, but if the coach thinks that the NFL mistakenly labeled a forward pass as a lateral, and the difference is an all time record, why not ask for a review? If it was a lateral, no harm no foul but if it is, then Smith can add that to an already bizarre and unique career.

PS. I realize some commentors are normal, but the majority only spew hate, and to hate a guy who is smart, gracious and not: an abuser, rapist, cheater (on wife or the game) or a dog killer, seems a bit odd. Save the hate for guys who are bad off the field rather than above average on it and great off it.

I still don’t get all the Alex Smith haters. As a 9ers fan I was never wowed by his abilities, but he is smart and appears to be a good guy. I can understand not thinking he’s great or not caring, but I just am confused by all the hate.
