Brady Quinn ruled out, Matt Cassel to start for Chiefs on Thursday

Matt Cassel is back as the starting quarterback for the Chiefs, at least for this week.

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel confirmed today that Brady Quinn has been ruled out for Thursday night’s game against the Chargers after suffering a concussion on Sunday, which means that Cassel is back in the starting lineup. Ricky Stanzi will be the Chiefs’ No. 2 quarterback in San Diego.

Cassel suffered a concussion of his own in Week Five, and after seeing Quinn play in Cassel’s place, Crennel decided to stick with Quinn even after Cassel was cleared to return. But now that Quinn is hurt, it’s Cassel’s turn to try to prove he belongs as the Chiefs’ starter.

Cassel has already faced the Chargers once this season, throwing three interceptions in a Week Four loss, one of the many games this season in which the Chiefs have shown off an absolutely dismal passing attack. That’s probably not going to change whether it’s Cassel, Quinn or Stanzi playing quarterback.

Cassel will be benched at halftime, and Stanzi will lead a heroic comeback over the Chargers.

Wait, no, never mind. They’re both terrible.

Dang! There goes the 100% confidence you could have picked the Chargers to win and play all their players in your fantasy league. Any NFL team that starts Brady Quinn will lose. He is horrible.

Good new for the Chiefs.. well sort of.. Cassel is the “less worse” QB of the two

  4. passiveaggressivechiefsfan says: Oct 30, 2012 12:53 PM

Doesn’t matter who is starting…Cassel or Quinn….the result will be the same.

KC needs a viable QB and Philly needs a viable safety.

    Vick for Berry? Anyone?

The good news for Chiefs fans is they are in the running for the first pick in the draft.

  9. burlbradley says: Oct 30, 2012 12:55 PM

Biggest problem facing the Chargers isn’t who’s starting for KC but who’s starting for them.

  10. dickslipper says: Oct 30, 2012 12:57 PM

Quinn just can’t catch a break! I’d like to feel sorry for him, but some guys are just not cut out for the NFL. Brady: Now your done!

It’s okay, KC fans, it’s early in the season! We can still come ba…oh who am I kidding.

Oh wait, we actually does have a chance because we are only 3 games behind the div. leader because we belong in the worst division in NFL… hooray?

With the first pick in the 2013 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select…

  13. gooch80 says: Oct 30, 2012 1:05 PM

At least with Cassel at the helm, you have someone that can throw the ball to Bowe (as long as he doesn’t get traded before Thursday’s deadline).

This team is a disaster. NFL.com around the league power poll didnt even include KC. Just 31 teams.

Seriously, play Stanzi. At least see if the kid has something.

  19. crappygovernment says: Oct 30, 2012 1:24 PM

One of the Qb-challenged AFC West teams should trade for Tebow and stick it to Elway and greedy Peyton within the division.

Peyton should have gone to SF but he was too greedy/scared of his kid brother.

Im more surprised Crennel knows who his QB’s are.

  24. jbaxt says: Oct 30, 2012 1:30 PM

When can Pioli be ruled out… I’ve been waiting to see the headline: “Pioli’s out” for 3 weeks now.

  25. texastbones says: Oct 30, 2012 1:34 PM

I like the idea of playing Stanzi too.

That way our QB will not only run and throw like a girl but he can look like a girl too.

Stanzi is cute in an Eddie Murphy “I didn’t know that was a dude” way.

  26. jdubkc says: Oct 30, 2012 1:43 PM

    Go Kansas State…

  27. thundersandpackers says: Oct 30, 2012 1:44 PM

a golden oppurtunity erased. cassel gets benched and Brady starts and gets injured. remember last year when Matt schaub goes down and leinart comes in and gets hurt. seriously COME ON MAN. golden oppurtuniy wasted. if the browns dont want you, it probably meant that u suck.

  28. thejohnsmith1122 says: Oct 30, 2012 1:48 PM

Even if they spend the 1st pick/top pick on a QB, I feel sorry for whoever it is with the coaching staff the Chiefs currently have.

  29. kurtrundell says: Oct 30, 2012 1:56 PM

Cassel is, at best, an average NFL QB. But the guy is tough because he takes a beating thanks to one of the worse pass protection O-lines in the league, but keeps getting back up. He’s the second coming of Bill Kenney, without the skills.

It also doesn’t help that his WRs routinely drop passes that result in INTs and missed big plays.

  30. mz1394 says: Oct 30, 2012 1:57 PM

title should read brady quinn ruled out of the league.

  31. pacific123ocean says: Oct 30, 2012 1:59 PM

Where in the world is Matt Leinart when you need him?

  32. tindeaux says: Oct 30, 2012 2:34 PM

the chiefs can sign norv turner to play qb for them. norv used to play qb.

  33. bathroomben7 says: Oct 30, 2012 2:38 PM

When did KC decide to try to outdo the Browns in the “disaster of a franchise” area? Maybe if they bring in a few more horrible Belichick cast-offs things will come together.

  34. strokeytheclown says: Oct 30, 2012 2:50 PM

Fine! I will come in and play QB for the Chiefs! Geez!

  35. geefan1 says: Oct 30, 2012 2:53 PM

Stanzi to start the second half?

  36. vegaskid21 says: Oct 30, 2012 2:58 PM

Any chance the Chiefs can trade for Tebow?

  37. hehateme2 says: Oct 30, 2012 3:50 PM

I hope that the chef fans don’t boo him ….again.

  38. nomoreseasontix says: Oct 30, 2012 4:28 PM

Kinda looks like that one backfired.
Now you need to rely on the guy you kicked to the curb.

    #disarray

  39. eustus says: Oct 30, 2012 4:52 PM

Has anyone heard anything from Eric Winston regarding why the Chiefs QBs keep having their blocks knocked off?

    No?

    Didn’t think so…

  40. raiderapologist says: Oct 30, 2012 8:34 PM

The sad thing is, Cassel has proved he belongs as the Chiefs’ starter.
