With starting safety Louis Delmas seemingly unable to stay healthy, the Lions are looking into improving their depth at the position with a trade.

The Lions are concerned about Delmas, who suffered a knee injury on Sunday, and are looking to acquire a veteran with starting experience, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS.

Most teams probably aren’t willing to trade a starting safety in the middle of the season, but if the Lions are willing to part with a future draft pick there’s probably a player they can acquire who would start for them in Delmas’s absence. The NFL’s trade deadline is Thursday afternoon.

Delmas is the best player in the Lions’ secondary, but he missed the last five games of the 2011 regular season with a knee injury and then missed the first five games of this season when he suffered another knee injury in training camp. Delmas left Sunday’s win over the Seahawks when he hurt his knee once again, and although Lions coach Jim Schwartz described Delmas as day to day, it appears that the Lions believe it will be many days before Delmas can play again.
