Tom Brady: We’re 5-3, don’t say we could be undefeated

AP

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said on Monday that he views his team as close to 8-0 because all four of Seattle’s losses have been close. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady could make the same claim about his team, but he says he doesn’t view it that way.

The Patriots are 5-3 with two losses by one point and one loss by two points, so they could easily claim that they’re only three plays away from being 8-0. But Brady dislikes that mindset.

“We’re at where we really deserve to be,” Brady said on WEEI. “I don’t think we’ve played any better than our record. We don’t deserve to be anything better than we are. Look, every team can go, ‘Wow, without these plays we could be undefeated.’ Every team can say that. But we’re not, and there’s a reason why. It’s not like we’ve played great football over these last eight weeks. There is a lot of improvement we need to make. There is a lot of things we can do better. We need to get some guys healthy. We have to get everybody moving forward and make a big push here in the second half because this is where the best teams really start to show themselves.”

Four of the Patriots’ five wins came by double-digit margins, and the Patriots lead the league in net points, having outscored their opponents by a total of 262-170 this season, so if there’s any team in the league that can make a case for being better than its record, that team is New England.

But Brady prefers to simply say that the Patriots are what their record says they are.

  1. That’s why Brady has done what he has and is as good as he is. He’s never satisfied. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s keeping an eye out for an upgrade on Giselle. ;).

  2. they were undefeated once before , had 19-0 trademarked, printed up tens of thousands of shirts ahead of time with their new proclamation…………………………..then they played a real team and got beat.

at least Bobby Kraft was sooooooo generous to give those poor children in Honduras free shirts out of the goodness of his heart.

  3. Always says the right thing. But, you know and I know… When they get some of their best players back from injury(Hernandez,Mankins, etc), watch out.

  4. I don’t like the Pats, but lookout Seahag fans, Brady just b1tchslapped Carroll with his three Super Bowl rings on (how many does carroll have?)

  5. And this is why I am just savoring every game Tom Brady suits up a New England Patriot. Quarterbacks like this come along once in a fan’s lifetime and I’ve been lucky to ride the wave.

  6. They are 5-3 and on their way to 12-4 or 11-5 and a first round playoff exit.

The Pats defense is so bad I fully expect them to get mashed by anyone they meet in the postseason.

  7. I watched 2 of those losses very closely and claim that absolutely for sure Belichick was responsible for them. So not having kept tabs on the 3rd loss, you could have been 7-1 if the HC did a good job. And you very well could have lost at least 1 of those wins for sure that I also watched that Belichick severely compromised the chances in. He’s having a dreadfully negative impact this year.

  8. Tom is right. They have been very poor in the games they have lost. They have also run up the score in some of the wins (not a criticism). But they are in a great position at the halfway point and should take advantage of that.

  9. Tom Brady should have reminded that that whehter you’re “so closed to being undefeated” or ACTUALLY UNDEFEATED (18-0) that it’s all pointless unless you win the last game of the season. Think Brady could have said that with a straight face and credibility?

  10. This difference in mindset is why the Patriots are perennial playoff contenders and the Seahawks will be hoping an 8-8 season is good for a wild card.

  11. I know there are alot of Brady haters out there, but this is refreshing to hear. Multiple coaches/players say that they are close to being undefeated or they should be undefeated. Those few plays are the reason you aren’t undefeated, if you had made those plays maybe you would be undefeated but you didn’t. Is there anything more reflective of how good a team is than their record?

  12. Meh.. I say they could be 7-1 at , if not for the missed Gostkowski kick vs ARZ and the Justin Tucker “FG” in the Ravens game which looked like a miss IMO.

They deserved to lose to SEA though… they had opportunities in the redzone and came away with no points (Brady INT, time ran out before halftime) before they gave up the winning score to Sidney Rice.

…you mean like last year when they were(yet again) one play away from wining it all?!!?

  14. Pats defense once again cant stop a high school offense this year. Its whats hurt them for years.

  15. Except for five rookie minutes in the first game of the season, a kicker off his game and one bad play the Dolphins could say the same. But they don’t.

Didn’t hurt ’em when they won those AFC Championship games in Pittsburgh on the way to winning Super Bowls

You have to do something over the last 20yrs to earn a little cred.

He DID say pretty much exactly that the other day in his radio spot on D & C. They asked him about the offense’s numbers in 07 and does he prefer that type of offense or mind a more balanced one etc. and he said yeah but the result that year (07) was the same as last year, the year before etc…nothing…no SB win. He said he’s for what wins…period. And he means it.

Also KattyKathy, I sincerely hope you aren’t really a woman because you do zero to help the credibility of all of us women posters here. You must hate your real head coach as well because he and BB are very good friends. Too bad for you that they’re 2 peas in a pod. I love Sean Payton.

Pats D has room for improvement but oddly enough, they are actually BETTER with giving up long yardage plays. And they have a bunch of new young guys. I can stand a little “cover your eyes” time watching them because I think they will get better, unlike some units in the past that were old, full of JAGs and misfits and not so good (ie 09).

  19. other than their 18-0 run a few years ago when we pretty arrogant, i love the way he handles himself, and how real he is when topics like this come up.
    class act for sure.

  20. Makes sense, their super bowl wins where by 3 points each I believe, so if you start counting 3 point loses as wins, the dynasty disappears.

  21. Like most non-Pats fans, I hate Brady. But he’s always had the right attitude, and that’s been a big contributor to his success.

  23. The Patriots have been a pretty horrible 4th quarter team this year on both sides of the ball and there is no getting around that. Those safeties have no freaking clue either. They need to run the table or beat everyone but SF to earn a buy. They will also need some help.

  24. Pats starting safeties are Steve Gregory and Patrick Chung. Gregory has missed 4 games (and counting) while Chung has missed 3 games (and counting). Both will be back.
Their current safeties have “no freakin’ clue” (and I agree) because they’re both rookies.

  25. It certainly helps when every other team in your division has sucked for as long as you have been a QB, eh Tom? Oh sure one of them pops up every now and then and makes the playoffs but there is no consistent threat to the Patriots in the AFC Least.

  26. Every Seahawks fan gets called a whiner if they bring up being screwed in the biggest game of all(and yes confirmed by the ref that worked the game) yet we still have everyone and their brother saying that the Pack got screwed out of a victory because of 1 play in an early season game and we have to continue to hear about it on this site every day. Hypocrites.

And you can say the SAME thing about the Colts run with Manning
    in the AFC South.

Typical hater , always with the excuses as to why they are good.

  28. I don’t have a problem with “could be”, but “should be” is going too far.. And with the NBA starting tonight, they always say about every game comes down to the last 2 minutes. I like the “could be” more though when you win big and lose by a few points like the Pats have this season.

  29. Four of the Patriots’ five wins came by double-digit margins, and the Patriots lead the league in net points, having outscored their opponents by a total of 262-170 this season, so if there’s any team in the league that can make a case for being better than its record, that team is New England.

Err, I think if any team has a case for being better than its record, its Green Bay.

Can’t make excuses for the losses to San Fran or Indie, they just got outplayed. But everyone knows GB deserves to be 6-2 right now after the Fail Mary in Seattle.

  30. Kathy Kathy both teams in the super bowl has shirts made every year! And every year children in Africa or other 3 world countries wear the Super Bowl losers on there bodies.

  31. I agree with brady 100%, theres no point in going back and saying you should be 8-0 not 5-3. If for some reason they didn’t make the playoffs, it wouldn’t matter how close they came, what matter is their record

  32. The seahawks are lucky to be where they are. The should be 2-6 in reality. Their crash back to earth is going to be awesome.

  33. Brady knows what it’s like to win games when you’re running on all or half or no cylinders. Any team that is going out there and consistently putting Ws on the board is a good team. Every team can be competitive in this league.

  34. Giving credit to the Giants, I think they proved that a mediocre team from Sept to November can win it all if they grow and improve as a team.

The Patriots are one game ahead of mediocre. I think they realize the time to peak is January, not October.

  35. @kattykathy

The Pats played that “real team” in the regular season. If memory serves me correct, the Pats prevailed. I was hoping for a SB rematch, however, comments such as yours make me wish different. Good luck and keep on katting.

  36. “Can’t make excuses for the losses to San Fran or Indie, they just got outplayed. But everyone knows GB deserves to be 6-2 right now after the Fail Mary in Seattle.”

Uh…..no. Teams that “deserve” to win never leave it to one bad call by an official to change the W-L columns. Teams that “deserve” to win go up by enough points so a bad call makes no difference.

  37. Brady said earlier this month that his goal is, as always, to be the team that is happy with how the season went when it is all over. Counting losses as “almost wins” doesn’t get you closer to that mission.

  38. Brady has the attitude of a proven winner that is not used to many losses. Carroll has the attitude of head cheerleader. He is trying to instill some confidence in his young team. He knows they are close and wants his players to try just a bit harder to turn those close losses into wins. Nothing wrong with either approach but I would prefer Brady’s.

  39. Brady and Manning (the elder bro) are the “statesmen” for QBs in the NFL today. They have been playing for a long, long time now and their team’s accomplishments
speak for themselves. It was such a treat to watch these 2 play the other week as matchups as great as this will not be happening too much longer.

  40. The seahawks are lucky to be where they are. The should be 2-6 in reality. Their crash back to earth is going to be awesome.

No. Reality IS that they are 4-4, but let the Seahawk bashing continue.

What a bunch of BS. For logically impaired, IF the refs make the final call correctly, GB wins and Hawks lose. Vast majority people (outside of Great Northwest) believe it was a bad call. Seattle really should be 3-5.

The Seahawks bring it on themselves. All they had to do was admit the truth that they were gifted a game, and they could have at least maintained some measure of respect. It’s not like anyone expected them to forfeit that game or anything, but at least man up. But going from denial and rationalization to actually having the gall to say you should be 8-0 in a season when you were gifted a game by replacement refs? Yeah, this is officially my new least favorite team. Their demise will be a beautiful thing to behold.

He never said that they SHOULD be 8-0. Go back and re-read his comments. And the Hawks and their fans could give a rat’s ass if you like them or not. We don’t need you. You can like the Cowboys, Packers, Patriots, Steelers or whoever else is winning that you can jump on until they start losing. And reality will continue to show that they are 4-4. Accept it or not. It’s their record. Keep denying it all you want. Let me know when they change it to 3-5.

  44. 5-3 last year… made the Super Bowl. I think they are a bit better this year, but so are some other teams. Their games against Houston and the 49ers at home late in the season will be telling. If they win both they will be favored to go back to the Super Bowl, if they lose both, they will be favoured to go out in the second round.

Regardless of who goes to the Super Bowl from the AFC, they will have their hands full with the NFC team. The NFC has become the better conference by a significant margin over the last 5 years. Until the 2007 super bowl the Patriots rarely lost to the NFC in the Brady era, now they were beat by Arizona and Seattle. The NFC has improved across the board.

  45. I predicted the Pats would be 6-2 at the midpoint… and that loss to Seattle was as bad as they get for me… Tom is right… we are what are record says we are…

    I hate the bye week… Sunday’s suck when your team isn’t playing…
