Vick remains the starter in Philly, for now

Michael Vick AP

If Eagles coach Andy Reid has decided to switch from Mike Vick to Nick Foles at quarterback, Reid hasn’t told anyone else yet.

As pointed out earlier today by Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Eagles released an updated depth chart on Tuesday.  It showed that Vick is still the starter.

Also, Jeff McLane of the Inquirer reported that neither Vick nor Foles have been informed of a change at the position.

Still, Hurricane Sandy has sheltered Reid from meeting with the media.  When he does, it’s likely that a clear, truthful answer will be provided.  Owner Jeffrey Lurie made it clear after the 2011 season that he expects Reid to be candid and forthcoming, explaining that a habit of saying things that may not have been the truth were aimed at protecting players.  Regardless of whether there was a benevolence to the B.S., Reid likely won’t be saying one thing and doing another.

The question becomes how candid he will be.  Will he admit that he considered a change?  Will he say that a change is still possible?  Will he address whether Vick could be benched at halftime, like Donovan McNabb was during a game against the Ravens in November 2008?

Giving Foles a crack at playing away from Lincoln Financial Field makes sense.  Then again, as Peter King pointed out during a visit to The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday, using Foles under circumstances in the Superdome that likely would require use of a silent count may not be ideal.

Of course, there’s nothing ideal right now about the Eagles.  Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com attributes the struggles to a troubling lack of leadership.  Regardless of what’s causing them, the struggles need to stop soon, or there will be major changes soon after the season ends.  If not sooner.

Have a great idea, trade Vick to Dallas and Eagles get Romo!!!!! Both guys need a change of scenario or change of coaching. This upcoming weekend might signal the end for Andy Reid but heck he can take a year off and come back refreshed and ready to coach again!!!!!!

I knew it was too good to be true. The thought of having to watch Vick play another snap, on MNF no less, makes me a sad panda. *SMH*

Vick should be in line for a contact extension. I mean think about it, the more money a player makes than the better they’ll perform. The real problem with Philly is McCoy, they just use him too much. I say scale back a little on the run and give Vick the chance to shine.

  5. rukiddnme29 says: Oct 30, 2012 8:34 PM

Vick is a curse to any team. Overrated, coach killing crap. Since Vick has entered the league, all the hype has made me feel like I’ve been taking crazy pills.

  6. ace8842 says: Oct 30, 2012 8:35 PM

Vick has not progressed at all in 2 years. It’s time to move on. It’s not that Vick isn’t better than Foles right now, it’s that Vick can’t take Eagles fans where they want to go, to the Super Bowl. Heck, I’m not even sure if he can make the playoffs. You can’t win with that type of inconsistency. Foles is taller thus the 3 step drops will be easier, and he got hit a lot behind a bad line in AZ.

  7. robataille says: Oct 30, 2012 8:37 PM

It would be a mistake to bench him this early, but Andy’s fighting for his job, so…. May as well roll the dice on what’s his name.

  8. thestrategyexpert says: Oct 30, 2012 8:38 PM

Vick IS an elite QB, the Eagles should be happy to have him.

The decision was already made, long ago, to make Vick the QB. They put their eggs in that basket and the best play is to continue riding that investment. Unless they have a trade offer that makes sense, any decision to bench him would be simply a LOSING decision.

Not a tough choice at all. The only choice is to accept/decline the best trade offer available if there is any trade offer on the table.

Andy better start practicing his Ben Franklin voice cause he’s going to be out of Job after the new year.

  10. flavordave says: Oct 30, 2012 8:44 PM

Whats the point? Hes cooked. He was caught from behind by a D-lineman. Does he really give them the best chance to win? What has he ever won in 11 years? I dont question his desire to win because I see how hard hes ballin out there, but he just doesnt have “it”.

Vick sort of looks like this homeless guy that sits out in front of the corner store by my apts in this pic. The eagles should sign him, cant be any worse than this bum they trotting out now.

Are you serious? How is he elite. 13 of the teams 18 turnovers. Sure that’s elite. 13 and 13 in their last 26 games with him as the QB sure that’s elite. More turnovers then touchdowns. I guess that’s elite too. A QB rating around 75 I guess that’s elite.

And then there is your comments about using McCoy too much. Do you know that when he gets 20 or more carries in a game. The Eagles tend to win. Not 20 or more touches but 20 or more carries. He does not get 20 carries very often but sure they use him to much.

  15. pftstory says: Oct 30, 2012 8:55 PM

No team is going to make a mid-season trade for a QB whose style of play is different than any other QB in the league.
Vick is not Elite. Unless your definition of Elite is not the top echelon of QB’s in the league.

Reid wont need to take a year off. There will be plenty of openings and he is well respected and will be hired. I expect San Diego.

  16. thestrategyexpert says: Oct 30, 2012 8:55 PM

    to Phillyfan:

He is elite, for many reasons, but that determination was made when they offered the contract. I for one VEHEMENTLY opposed the contract because it did not make sense for many reasons, but now that the decision is made, there is no logic to abandoning him for lots of reasons. One is, they need to capitalize on their investment, and a trade exit strategy or a play out for success strategy are the ONLY TWO acceptable choices.

They created a deal that forced them to play this hand out or create a salvage trade, and a nondescript Nick Foles is no appropriate measure in this particular circumstance at this time. Sorry, trying to keep this short without making an entire article out of it.

  17. phillyfanmatt says: Oct 30, 2012 8:57 PM

Sorry Varga only half of my comment was directed towards you. The part about McCoy that is. The elite QB part was meant for someone else.

  22. ososrule says: Oct 30, 2012 9:09 PM

Vick is not on the same level as Brady, Manning, Brees, Elway, Marino, etc. Get real, Elite, LMAO!!

  23. eaglesfan29 says: Oct 30, 2012 9:10 PM

Please please put foles in so when the saints knock him out the game then these dumb a$$ so call eagles fan can shut up. That o line is garbage and everyone knows it 60 percent of there line are backups even has a pratice player on the line. Are you kidding so Andy please make the change so when they are walking the 6ft6 foles back to the locker room all these fake eagles fan can go run there head into a wall. Vick is not the problem andy reid is the problem that o line is the problem that D fense is the problem what happen to team game. Vick didnt give up 30 points on sunday he dam show dont play defense

  26. dolphins4 says: Oct 30, 2012 9:19 PM

All I know is if Vick hadn’t turned the football over so much the Eagles would have 3 more wins. And in the preseason the offense was terrible before Vick got hurt but when Nick Foles played the offense was on fire. Foles is built for this offense and can lead this team with its current coaches to a Super Bowl victory.I’ve been around football for long enough to know that Foles has it.He can read defenses ,he’s smart,he has a strong arm ,he can through over people because he is 6 ft 6 inches tall and he has a good pocket presence. The only reason he dropped in the draft is because he played for a bad Arizona team who didn’t have a good O-line or receivers.

  27. phillyfanmatt says: Oct 30, 2012 9:20 PM

A contract does not make one elite. Being in the upper echelon at your position makes one elite. 2nd he is as good as gone after this season. The contract was only guaranteed for the first 2 years. And this is year two. So if they want to sit him now they have every right to do so. Will nick make this team better I can’t answer that but if they choose to play him that’s up to them. But in no way shape or form is Michael Vick elite.

  28. vargavarga says: Oct 30, 2012 9:28 PM

Don’t be sorry. I just couldn’t find the sarcasm button.

  29. screechingllama says: Oct 30, 2012 9:31 PM

IF Vick starts he needs to run more. He should shoot for 100 yards a game. He doesn’t have time to find WRs anyway behind that OL. If he takes a shot all this drama goes away anyway.

  30. jerrysshadescleaner says: Oct 30, 2012 9:44 PM

Hey vick cant be mad about mayb being benched, iam sure those dogs would have rather been benched. P

  31. broncosnative says: Oct 30, 2012 9:58 PM

Its a shame that when things go south, the QB is the one that pays. Not defending Vick but theres blame to go around throughout the whole team. QBs are most watched because they play the most important position in football. Putting nick in is not gonna change the way the eagles play and unless he can run for his life like Vick, he’s gonna get pounded behind that weak o line.

Haha. I love Philly fans. They tried for years to run McNabb out of Philly even during his prime. Heck they tried running him out of Philly on his draft day. Then Vick comes and makes them all swoon like teenage school girls. And just like a teenage crush it was over in the blink of an eye. But rumor has it there’s a new kid in town name Nick and he is oh so dreamy.

Starting his first game at the Superdome was supposed to be a very tough thing for RG3. We all know how that turned out. If Vick has to be benched Monday night, then seeing what Foles is made of right away is not a bad thing at all.

  40. dannythebisforbeast says: Oct 30, 2012 10:18 PM

Think u missed his sarcasm only an idiot would say use McCoy less. Vick is one of many issues. He’s not as good as his contract says, the o line is a mess. The d is a bunch of overrated individuals. the play calling is atrocious. They have no identity on offense or defense

  41. kvvvv2391 says: Oct 30, 2012 10:18 PM

It can’t be the QB’s fault that the Eagles have sucked for the past several years. First you blame McNabb and decide Kolb is the answer. Then Kolb sucks so Vick is the new savior. Now Vick is the anti-Christ and Noles has got to be chosen one to lead you to the promise land. (As a side note, if you think Noles is the answer you are delusional).
So trade out Vick for Noles. I’m guessing this time next year you’ll be calling for his head on a platter!

  42. superpats90 says: Oct 30, 2012 10:39 PM

Headline should read “Reid is the the head coach in Philly, for now”

  43. abninf says: Oct 30, 2012 10:40 PM

Pocket passers win championships. Guys who can stand in the pocket and accurately launch the rock down field. They don’t need to act like they’re a running back, just mobile enough to evade the rush and hit a receiver on the move. Guys who sit at home and watch tape as opposed to smoking dope so they can be fully prepared for the next defense they face. This is not Vick.

  44. bobleblah says: Oct 30, 2012 10:53 PM

Barring injury Nick Foles will not see the field this year unless the Eagles are mathematically eliminated. Week 14 at the earliest.

  45. rhymeswithpunt says: Oct 30, 2012 11:28 PM

  46. md228010 says: Oct 30, 2012 11:54 PM

I think Vick and the eagles make the playoffs… Shock the world and win the wildcard game… Vick becomes fantasy relevant again like he once was and everybody’s happy.. My bully Is sound asleep, time for bed.

  47. justwannawinna says: Oct 31, 2012 12:44 AM

I’m sorry Tom Brady loses when his line can’t block and his defense sucks as does brees, Rodgers, and rivers. I’m not putting Vick in the class but in sayin even guys like that struggle with that situation. The problem in Philly is more blocking and running with more motivation Cuz that talent is there. The d line needs to change its scheme away from that wide 9 which isn’t getting sacks. That safety play has to better.

  48. bigbluecrew420 says: Oct 31, 2012 1:21 AM

  49. joeyd524 says: Oct 31, 2012 6:40 AM

  50. death1to2hipsters3 says: Oct 31, 2012 7:11 AM

Vick has a lot of turnovers, yes. But he also has experience which Nick Foles has none of. I think they should stick with Vick until the end of the season, and if he is still the same QB he has been the last 6 weeks, then Foles is the way to go

  51. acasar123 says: Oct 31, 2012 8:32 AM

Michael Vick entered the league more than ten years ago. His career has taken him to two different NFL franchises sandwiched around a two year stint in federal prison. He has compiled career statistics that it would be an exaggeration to regard as mediocre, and he has one playoff victory to his credit. The fact that we continue to discuss his development and his potential, and then find infinite excuses for his failures after all these years is UNIMAGINABLE! And for all you race-baiters who are ready to pounce, I agree that race has had a significant impact on Vick’s career. If he was white, he would have been out of the league years ago!

  52. dolphins4 says: Oct 31, 2012 8:44 AM

Vick is an athlete playing QB .Nick Foles is a quarterback playing quarterback.

  53. phillyphannn83 says: Oct 31, 2012 9:10 AM

Wow, not one of you have been right with what you’ve said. The only one who came close is the guy who’s post was entirely sarcastic and no one even caught it. It’s not Vick’s fault, it’s not the defenses fault, it’s about 30% the injuries on the o-line and 70% Reid/Marty’s horrendous play-calling. Vick would have half the turnovers he has if they had any clue how to run an offense. You can’t put it on him. We’ve known for YEARS they were terrible play-callers and this year it is blatantly horrendous, anyone who doesn’t realize they’re to blame is either watching a different game or blinded by their hatred for Vick. All you see is his stat line showing 3 picks and you say “oh, he had 3 picks, hes garbage, must be his fault” while being completely ignorant to the fact he threw the damn ball 65 times and LeSean McCoy touched the ball 3 times in the first half. We went into this season already down a pro-bowl LT and it joy worse from there. With this mish-mash hodge-podge of an O-line, we should be running the ball 2/3 if every game. Mudd runs a very difficult blocking scheme to comprehend, which is magnified on pass blocking and backups don’t do well in his system. It is absolutely logical to run the ball but Andy/Marty insist on dropping #7 back over and over and over again. The blame lies squarely with them, people. Theres no way around it.
