Assuming Talib is smart enough to learn the Pats' defense this is a good trade for both teams.

It usually seems to take about half a year for any new player to get comfortable in the system and really start understanding where and what they are supposed to be doing on any given play.

So, by the playoffs he should be fitting in well and hopefully playing up to his hype instead of down to his off the field issues.

Because Pat Chung and Steve Gregory have been injured, so the next in line are Tavon Wilson and Nate Ebner, both rookies. McCourty has not flashed like his rookie year with all those INT's, but he's done a solid job. Yes, he's had some mistakes, but he's been reliable. It has more to do with the fact that he has experience at safety from the end of last season.

Awesome for Tampa: they weren't going to keep Talib anyway and manage to get something decent for him.

Potentially awesome for New England: Even if he never became the shutdown corner he was billed as in the draft, Talib is a good player and a huge upgrade at New England's biggest position of need. Unlike Ocho or Haynesworth, he is only 26 and in the last year of his rookie deal. If he plays well for the high profile Patriots, he will make himself a nice pile of money in free agency somewhere. If he doesn't, he might be out of chances in the league. He has every reason to be a good soldier for a few months, which is all the Pats need for this trade to be worth it.

Not that I like this trade (I don't, I hate bringing a knucklehead to a young defense especially) but the other thing to consider is that a 4th round pick probably doesn't have as much of a chance to make the Pats team as he would to make the Bucs team. So it COULD be a win-win, but right now it's a win for the Bucs for sure. We all know that much as BB likes/respects Schiano, he doesn't listen to him (Winslow).

I’m a huge pats fan but if you’re excited about talib-mccourty on the outsides something is wrong. I actually think talib is pretty talented. Mccourty on the other hand has been a HUGE disappointment

Only to the pink hats. He’s actually top 10 in the league in pass deflections this year. People are getting wrapped up in a few glaring mistakes he’s made, but in reality he’s been solid. Not elite, but much better than last year, especially in man coverage.

Anyone posting on this story is an upgrade for the Pats at CB at this point. The fact that he is actually great talent can be significant if the dude just plays football and stays out of trouble.

If he can help that awful secondary go on a deep playoff run then the draft pick and the potential to not re-sign him will be worth a fourth.

High Risk, High Reward on this one. He is extremely talented, but can’t seem to stay out of trouble. On the other hand he could be a cancer in the locker room. I love the trade for the Pats though. More for next year than this year.

He's a free agent at the end of this season (unless Pats re-sign him).
The grade card for this unknown for now.

Pats fans - Dont worry about the 4th Round Pick - Bucs would end up taking an undersized D Lineman, Linebacker, or D Back..

Rich get richer... Only the Pats can pull of moves like this.. Some work (Dillon and Harrison) and some don't (Haynesworth and Ocho Cinco).. In the end, the Patriots will always be successful with Belichick and Brady.. All they need is players to mold into their way of thinking.. The rest is history.. We are always Super Bowl contenders.. Not just playoff contenders..

Are the Patriots better off with Talib or the fourth round pick?

Are the Bucs better off with the additional pick or the player?

I think this is win - win.

I’m a huge pats fan but if you’re excited about talib-mccourty on the outsides something is wrong. I actually think talib is pretty talented. Mccourty on the other hand has been a HUGE disappointment

Only to the pink hats. He's actually top 10 in the league in pass deflections this year. People are getting wrapped up in a few glaring mistakes he's made, but in reality he's been solid. Not elite, but much better than last year, especially in man coverage.

Guys, it's Bill Belicheck. If any coach can turn a trouble maker into a consistent performer, it's him.

This is coming from a Manning fan (in case the name isn't obvious). I may not like Bill, but he's certainly good at whipping trouble makers into shape.

Or, Kingsoldo, we’re Bucs fans who’ve seen him play consistently and realized that he’s good, but not elite. Nowhere close. And when you factor in the knucklehead element, we stole a 4th from the Pats. Sorry yo.

You may not be aware of this, but "good" is a huge upgrade from everyone except McCourty on the Pats.

I'll risk a 4th round pick for a good corner any day. What do you have to lose?

Ochocinco and Haynesworth didn't work out, but I guess people forgot about knuckleheads like Randy Moss and Corey Dillon.
