Tonight could be the end of the line for Norv

Norv Turner AP

The Chargers have lost three straight games.  The Chargers face on Thursday night the one-win Chiefs.

If the Chargers lose, coach Norv Turner could be done.

Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego believes that owner Dean Spanos will indeed pull the plug on the Norv Turner experiment, if the Chargers fall to 3-5 by losing to the 1-6 Chiefs.  Acee also believes that the job would then go to special-teams coordinator Rich Bissacia for the balance of the season.

And if Bissacia turns the team around, who knows?  He could secure the job beyond 2012 — and in turn save G.M. A.J. Smith’s.

If nothing else, it gives us a reason to watch tonight’s game.  Surely, it may be the only reason.  But it’s still a reason.

The Chargers, Kevin Acee and both their fans are all soft, like a baby’s butt.

    Choo choo!

  2. nflofficeadmin says: Nov 1, 2012 1:32 PM

    Goodnight Norvence.

  3. kattykathy says: Nov 1, 2012 1:36 PM

Norv and A.J. should get axed now. How A.J. held is job this long is amazing.

How do you let talent like Brees, Sproles, and Jackson walk away and get nothing in return?

Spanos screwed up by siding with A.J. over Schottenheimer. You don’t let a coach go that rebuilt that team into a 14-2 contender.

  4. mrplow3 says: Nov 1, 2012 1:36 PM

The Chargers won’t lose tonight, come on man.

  5. m3phitic says: Nov 1, 2012 1:36 PM

    What’s the point?

So what if they beat the one win Chiefs?

Why does beating a team barely worse then your own save your job?

    Sincerely,

    Disgruntled Chargers Fan

  6. roxtar10 says: Nov 1, 2012 1:37 PM

Long overdue. Although I think San Diego should win handily tonight, Norv’s gotta go.

  7. rabidbillsfan says: Nov 1, 2012 1:37 PM

Forgive me for not following the comings and goings of San Diego coaching personell, but isn’t this the same STC that headed up the horrendous Charger ST unit the past few years? And if so, why is he in line to become the interim head coach?

  8. burlbradley says: Nov 1, 2012 1:38 PM

Norv Turner has had the longest short leash of all-time. At this point I don’t think he’d know what to do if people liked him.

  9. jeffa43 says: Nov 1, 2012 1:39 PM

More important…. If KC happens to go up 3 -0 early, that will be the first lead KC has had this year (with time still on the clock).

If anyone could fall behind to the Chiefs, the Chargers can.

Which makes me think… If Cassel holds on to the ball, and if Romo & Jason Garret did not speak different languages.

You would really see Baltimore for what they are.

Norv will survive tonight… It will be close, cuz our local SD peewee football has a qb with a stronger arm then Rivers.. Just sayin.

  10. ken0west says: Nov 1, 2012 1:41 PM

Experiment? More like an exhaustive real world trial that has proven his mediocrity and is beginning to prove his utter incompetence.

  11. donterrelli says: Nov 1, 2012 1:42 PM

Seems like it gets to this point every season for him.

  12. andrewproughcfe says: Nov 1, 2012 1:43 PM

This is impossible. Norv is “innovative”. I know – ESPN has been telling me so for years.

  13. tindeaux says: Nov 1, 2012 1:46 PM

i said this at the end of last season… so let’s wait and see… when aj is still there, firing norv is nothing but making norv a scapegoat for aj’s poor draft choices.

  14. berniemadoffsides says: Nov 1, 2012 1:46 PM

Long overdue – he’s just not getting it done.

  15. mz1394 says: Nov 1, 2012 1:49 PM

while norv shouldnt even be a head coach right now a.j.smith should take the advice of that miami fan when he told gm ireland you should fire yourself

  16. hoopieguy says: Nov 1, 2012 1:49 PM

It should be the end of the line for Rivers too. Over-rated, bad team mate, hot head, plus, the guy has the strangest throwing motion I have ever seen in any QB

  17. S.Nevada says: Nov 1, 2012 1:50 PM

This should have been a headline a year or two ago.

  18. passiveaggressivechiefsfan says: Nov 1, 2012 1:50 PM

And it could be the end of the line for Romeo and Pioli.

Oh right…the Chefs ownership is that smart.

m3phitic is right with his comment:

    What’s the point?

So what if they beat the one win Chiefs?

Why does beating a team barely worse then your own save your job?

    Sincerely,

    Disgruntled Chargers Fan

  19. geniusfan says: Nov 1, 2012 1:50 PM

Hearing the name Norv Turner is more than enough to make most NFL fans laugh and Chargers fans cry.

  20. djcologne says: Nov 1, 2012 1:51 PM

Norvell….just like any other turkey necked turkey, will have his head lopped off before the end of November….just sayin’……..

  21. buckyhamm says: Nov 1, 2012 1:53 PM

  22. ireadpftforthecomments says: Nov 1, 2012 1:54 PM

As a fan of another team…

    GO CHARGERS!

Anything to keep Norv Turner as San Diego’s head coach!

  23. patsfiend says: Nov 1, 2012 1:55 PM

It all comes down to them beating the CHIEFS? Sad… just sad. There are going to be a lot of empty seats at the Q through the rest of the year.

  24. bigjdve says: Nov 1, 2012 1:57 PM

We heard the Norv is gone last year, and he is still coaching. I would love to see him gone. He is a pretty good coordinator but a less than good head coach.

    We will see what happens.

  25. joecool16280 says: Nov 1, 2012 1:58 PM

Is it me or have these Thursday night games been weak this year?

  26. cosmoman11 says: Nov 1, 2012 2:01 PM

AJ saves his job by firing Norv? Shouldn’t he be fired first for getting rid of Marty and hiring Norv?

  27. lightofkolob says: Nov 1, 2012 2:02 PM

Sad to see Norv fired before Smith. Norv shouldn’t be in this position because AJ should have never fired Schottenheimer. Marty wanted to keep Brees……
Turner let go of Marty (HOF) Brees (HOF) Tomlinson (HOF) Michael Turner, Darren Sproles, Vincent Jackson….let them all walk. What a terrible GM. Worst in the NFL.

  28. patswhatsup says: Nov 1, 2012 2:03 PM

Does anyone else feel like Norv has basically given up?

  29. wellwtf says: Nov 1, 2012 2:05 PM

As a Bronco fan, I want Norv to stay in SD for a loooooong time

  30. war27 says: Nov 1, 2012 2:07 PM

Don’t care either way but if your special teams coord is the most qualified coach on your team to take over the HC job you have issues.

  31. icanspeel says: Nov 1, 2012 2:08 PM

And if the Chargers win, Norv probably only buys the next week

  32. curtis35w says: Nov 1, 2012 2:11 PM

i pray every night when i lay my head down that i wake up a fan of some other team…….i truly love and Hate the chargers. please fire them both win or loss! A win against the Chiefs should not be a job saver.

  35. geefan1 says: Nov 1, 2012 2:12 PM

Spanos ought to bring Marty in as interim GM

  36. crybabyrivers says: Nov 1, 2012 2:16 PM

There you have it you just turned every Chargers fan into chief fans.

  37. chatham10 says: Nov 1, 2012 2:17 PM

It seems every year the NFL fires a bunch of head coaches which in turn means a lot of ass’t coaches are out of jobs. I think in most cases it is the General Managers who should get fired as they have the say (most of the time) on who make up the roster and I do not care how good you can coach if you do not have the players you have nothing.

  38. yaryers says: Nov 1, 2012 2:19 PM

Wait, so if the Chargers lose and Turner is axed, AJ can still potentially keep his job? Does Spanos not realize that AJ is the biggest part of the problem?

And to all those saying the Chargers should have kept Brees: He snapped his shoulder in half. Dr. James Andrews said in an ESPN segment that only 5% come back from that injury to play at a high level. Not even the Dolphins wanted Brees…they chose Culpepper over him, when Brees so desperately didn’t want to become a Saint.

  39. snowpea84 says: Nov 1, 2012 2:19 PM

Smith and Turner clearly both have to go.

  40. jtfawver says: Nov 1, 2012 2:20 PM

I think either 1 of these teams would take Marty Schottenheimer back over who they have now.

Seriously, are there 2 worse head coaches than Turner and Crennel?

As a Chiefs fan I can say I didnt appreciate Marty while he was in KC. Year in and year out we had good teams. Yes, we fell short and choked in the playoffs but with Crennel we’ll have a top 3 pick every year as long as he is here.

    Bring Back Marty.

  41. chief67 says: Nov 1, 2012 2:21 PM

I don`t see the Chargers losing to the Chiefs at home , Norvel should be good for one more week !

  42. mrgroovesd says: Nov 1, 2012 2:22 PM

It’s such a catch 22 for us Bolt fans. We want our team to win but if they win and by a big chance they make it to the playoffs then Norv stays. If they lose then Norv is gone. We don’t want the team to lose but that’s the only way Norv is gone.

  43. raiduhdude says: Nov 1, 2012 2:24 PM

Chargers always play well when Norvell’s job is on the line… hope this is one of those night! Or hope they get embarassed too… either or!

  44. yaryers says: Nov 1, 2012 2:25 PM

    @lightofkolob

Schottenheimer never said he wanted to keep Brees. Brees was gone…it was a no-brainer. You have a severly injured QB, and a young up-and-comer who you (basically) drafted in the first round; who do you choose?

Schottenheimer was fired because he tried to hire his brother as DC, and this, amongst other things, rubbed AJ the wrong way.

And Michael Turner is most defnitely not a HOFer. And again, they couldn’t justify keeping Turner over the face of the franchise, when it wasn’t 100% clear that Tomlinson had lost it.

  45. thegreatgabbert says: Nov 1, 2012 2:27 PM

Norv’s family and friends will gather at Qualcomm tonight, and remain in the San Diego area for as long as it takes.

  46. gdeli says: Nov 1, 2012 2:28 PM

I hope it is. Watching from MN has been very painful to do and watching the dismantling of a pretty good team has to be hair pulling for you charger fans. Going from a 14-2 season with super ego marty to this is bad. Dropping sproles, jackson, etc. what do the mgmt and norv think was gonna happen? Why not tie rivers hands behind his back and slap him repeatedly? It’s that ridiculous.

  47. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Nov 1, 2012 2:32 PM

Why is Spanos even messing around with hiring anyone other than Kevin Acee for the job? He’s obviously the most qualified person for the position. No wonder why coaches want to punch these guys in the mouth

  48. scrp2 says: Nov 1, 2012 2:36 PM

I heard Schottenheimer will be a special guest on the K.C. sideline.

  49. haleyistheman00 says: Nov 1, 2012 2:44 PM

As a huge kc fan, I hope everyone gets fired including pioli and I have stuck up for him until this past week. Crennel is an absolute horrible coach. These players have no passion no fight. They are lazy hence having almost 30 turnovers this year. They are pathetic except Charles. That’s it. The defense is alright but when your on the field all game long its just a matter of time before you give up points. Dabol the offensive cord is horrid. Lets run run pass punt. Run run pass punt. Run run pass punt. Pass run run punt. No creativity. I’m absolutely sick of this team. An for the first time in my life I hope they lose so we can draft a qb. Get a new coach new gm. Maybe we could look forward to next year. Ehhh

  58. tdurdenlives says: Nov 1, 2012 2:58 PM

  60. azarkhan says: Nov 1, 2012 3:03 PM

norv turner and aj smith to afc fans is like romo and jerry jones for us.. i want romo (or turner in this case) to do good enough to keep his starting job until hes to old bec you know he/they will never win the big dance. jerry jones just needs to step aside, be quiet and stop puttin pressure on his team..i was upset to see wade phillips go to i loved that he was still dallas HC… GO GMEN

  63. bolts0621 says: Nov 1, 2012 3:07 PM

As a Charger fan we are rooting for a roller coaster ending with Norv. It would be a disaster to hand the reins over to Rich Bissacia – then have him get a couple of lucky wins and get the job full time

We need Norv, AJ, Rich – everyone gone!!! And a redl coach and GM in there

  64. xpensivewinos says: Nov 1, 2012 3:08 PM

Norv & AJ are now one and the same. You keep both or get rid of both. One or the other cannot survive.

Norv had some early success (with what was still Marty’s team with Tomlinson and a few others in their prime). But, the team has gotten progressively worse in terms of player talent, coaching, preparation, etc and they’re looking at three straight years out of the playoffs if they continue down the path they’re on.

The NFL is the entertainment business and ownership is offering a product that the community is now apathetic about. Not good unless they’re moving the team and they just don’t care.

  65. baloneyjohn says: Nov 1, 2012 3:10 PM

  66. nflunbiased says: Nov 1, 2012 3:10 PM

Norm is lame. Even when he had better teams he always got outcoached when the chips were down. Marty Shottenheimer was the same. Browns and Chargers coaching most memorable of Marty. If I wrote this blurb many years ago, you could just substitute his name in for Norm’s. Same type of guy.

  67. ralphiepower says: Nov 1, 2012 3:15 PM

  68. jjackwagon says: Nov 1, 2012 3:17 PM

What a lowly state we have come to, both sets of fans are rooting for the other team to win, in hopes that it will be the catalyst that gets their own coach and GM fired. But alas…here we are.

  69. jcdavey2011 says: Nov 1, 2012 3:32 PM

even if sd wins, norv might be fired the next day

if you’re going to make an in-season change, the best time to do it is right after a thursday night game due to the long preperation time afterwards.

  70. cloudaccesssecurity says: Nov 1, 2012 3:34 PM

At this point, any of the internal staff as interim would be just as ineffectual (or moreso) than Norv. I wanted him (and AJ) gone last year, but I would rather him finish the season and then get a front line coach.

  71. 7swag7 says: Nov 1, 2012 3:41 PM

The ‘Norv getting fired’ stories have resulted in a ‘boy who cried wolf’ reaction from most of us. Not saying he deserves to keep his job – just stop warning me about it, and let me know when it actually happens. Thanks.

  72. whysomanylosers says: Nov 1, 2012 3:43 PM

Rich Bissacia is a GREAT coach.
He had as much to do with leading the Bucs on their championship run as Gruden, Kiffen, and Rod Marinelli.
He got out of Tampa because he could see the writing on Raheem’s wall.

who would want to coach in san diego after the fans bury their coaches likes its cat poop. norv isnt all the problem and shouldnt be on the hot seat. PR should be on the hot seat.. smith should be fired for his last comments, but ultimately coaches as long as they call the right plays, manage the clock, and the intangible things they are fine.. but when theres no leadership from the qb position that can transition to the def side of the ball its not gonna work.. case in point the cowboys, alot of talent no leadership, then the broncos not as much talent as sd and yet manning makes them produce and that creates productivity on both sides of the ball.. as a RAIDERS fan i hope they do sink but i get tired of complaining sd fans.. they didnt embrace martyball because after all its pointless to go 14-2 and not win a ring, but then what did marty ever win? yet all we hear is they shouldnt have let him go.. wah wah wah, next they let players go.. everyone does.. its football.. you want to try to run a organization like the steelers and pats, teams thats not known for bloated salaries.. win a dam ring first then you can do that..

  79. lushy21 says: Nov 1, 2012 4:15 PM

Is it bad that as a Chargers fan, I am wishing they lose tonight? I can’t stand AJ or Norv; I’m sad that Rivers has to deal with such a janky organization. Bad O-line, Ineffective D-line, weak secondary, Average WRs, no backup TE to Gates, bad drafts, oft-injured RB, release of good players like others have previously noted; how can Spanos stand such incompetence?

  81. eustus says: Nov 1, 2012 4:34 PM

Whooppee, Nerf’s boys beat the crummy Chiefs last night. Now SD is sure to keep him around for the rest of the season and probably beyond. This has become a running gag in the NFL as every year we have to endure Nerf cranking out half-baked efforts from his Chargers teams. How can SD’s brass not get it when it’s so obvious?

Lived in SD my whole life. Will never root for a San Diego team.. EVER! hope we lose the chargers to LA, the Padres are a farm team, and I pray we never get a basketball team because they’ll choke too but I digress. The stupid Chargers will wind up in the post season as a wild card (or worse the AFC Championship) and nothing will come of Norv’s pink slip dilemma. Not the die hard fans of the game, but the fair-weather fans that dont follow the team will spend the next year deficating from the mouth about how they almost went back to the Superbowl.. All in all, this is a total non story about a non-threating football team. Beg Gruden to come outta retirement so you can witness what a SB coach can do to a team with some potential.
