A Saints backfield that has struggled this year anyway will be without its most dynamic player.
Saints coach Joe Vitt announced Friday that Darren Sproles needed surgery to repair a broken hand, and would not play Monday night against the Eagles.
According to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Vitt was “vague on the timetable for Sproles’ recovery.”
Sproles doesn’t carry it too much, but he has 39 catches for 323 yards and four touchdowns out of the backfield.
While there isn’t a one-for-one replacement for Sproles among the rest of the Saints backs, it should create more opportunities for Pierre Thomas to carry the ball, along with Mark Ingram and Chris Ivory. If they wanted to try to replicate his run-pass threat, they could turn to rookie Travaris Cadet, who has worked as a back and a receiver this year, but hasn’t recorded a stat in the regular season.
