Darren Sproles out with a broken hand, which required surgery

A Saints backfield that has struggled this year anyway will be without its most dynamic player.

Saints coach Joe Vitt announced Friday that Darren Sproles needed surgery to repair a broken hand, and would not play Monday night against the Eagles.

According to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Vitt was “vague on the timetable for Sproles’ recovery.”

Sproles doesn’t carry it too much, but he has 39 catches for 323 yards and four touchdowns out of the backfield.

While there isn’t a one-for-one replacement for Sproles among the rest of the Saints backs, it should create more opportunities for Pierre Thomas to carry the ball, along with Mark Ingram and Chris Ivory. If they wanted to try to replicate his run-pass threat, they could turn to rookie Travaris Cadet, who has worked as a back and a receiver this year, but hasn’t recorded a stat in the regular season.

Wide receiver Courtney Roby has also been ruled out with a shoulder injury, putting that much more pressure on an offense that hasn’t been good enough to make up for the league’s worst defense.

Uh oh! Brees is going to need to revise his expectations for the offensive output potential of his offense and the defense, now more than ever, are going to need to be able to stop someone.

Sproles has to be one of the most underrated offensive weapons in the NFL and this is a huge loss. Especially for fantasy owners such as myself that have Drew Brees.

With that pathetic D, we will probably lose even if Vick has a miserable day!!

The season is a wash anyways thanks to Goodell, better to have him get injured and be out for games during a meaningless year rather than if they actually had a chance and were counting on him.

    Brees wants an explanation.

Wasn’t Chris Ivory crying the other day about wanting to be traded?

Well… Now he gets to fill Sproles role for a bit.

I think that we will see some of Travaris Cadet, he is like a bigger Sproles, make people miss in space. I really like Ivory but due to his fumbleitis in the preseason we may not see him yet.
