Justin Tuck: Steelers get away with murder

Justin Tuck AP

For the second time in three weeks, a member of the Giants is saying an upcoming opponent gets away with murder.

Before the Giants played the 49ers, New York offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said San Francisco defensive end Justin Smith gets away with murder. And now Giants defensive end Justin Tuck is saying the same thing about Sunday’s opponents, the Steelers.

I hope we get some holding calls because they have gotten away with murder,” Tuck told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols. “They’ve done a very good job protecting Ben — they don’t hold on every play. But we’ve seen a whole lot of it.”

It’s probably safe to say Steelers coach Mike Tomlin won’t respond quite as harshly as 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh did to the previous “getting away with murder” accusation. But the Steelers’ offensive linemen may have something to say to Tuck on Sunday.

If their o-line is cheating, they’re not doing a very good job of it.

They do as good a job of protecting Ben and opening holes for the RBs as the Giants do of sounding like grown men who are past preschool

  2. worldwidebleater says: Nov 2, 2012 7:48 AM

Imagine that. Another Giant whining in the media. I’m sure John Mara will tell Goodell how to handle this.

  3. steelerfan9598 says: Nov 2, 2012 7:49 AM

I have a great deal of respect for the NY Giants organization but, geez, stop whining. You wanna see holding? Watch James Harrison try to get around the edge.

  4. berniemadoffsides says: Nov 2, 2012 7:49 AM

Diehard NYG fan, but Tuck shouldn’t be talking at all – he’s had one heck of a lackluster season thus far.

  5. 4t9er says: Nov 2, 2012 7:50 AM

It’s obvious they are trying to influence officiating. The Giants are really good team and I don’t understand why they need those underhanded methods to win.

  6. steelersownyou says: Nov 2, 2012 7:51 AM

Hahaha crybabies! Boo hoo big bad steelers are too tough mommy.. If you guys dont stop playing so physical im gonna take my ball and go home! Pathetic!

  7. duncanthecat says: Nov 2, 2012 7:51 AM

Watch the Redskins game if you want to see how
the refs looked the other way on numerous infractions.

Incredible that they were only called for two penalties.

  8. napoleonblownapart6887 says: Nov 2, 2012 7:52 AM

This bit is getting a little old. Don’t get me wrong it’s great gamesmanship – referees read the media as much as others. But it is getting a little tired.

Seems like before any big game (or not so big game) teams are saying that “we saw x-player or x-unit on tape getting away with x-transgression”. Lets just line up an play football.

  9. pdmjr says: Nov 2, 2012 7:52 AM

Tuck just wants an excuse when they lose to the Steelers on Sunday night

“Talk is cheap. Play the game.”

    __________________________
Dude… NOBODY gets dominated by the Steelers O Line. The ONLY reason they look remotely decent is because of Haley’s dink and dunk scheme. Ben doesn’t hold onto the ball for more than 2 seconds on any play this year, meaning nobody gets time to get into the backfield. It’s only a matter of time until teams realize the best way to beat this scheme is to jam at the line, protection will break down and so will Ben.

But like I said yesterday on the week 9 picks- the Steelers haven’t played a fron 7 like the G-Men yet. I’ll be back Monday with “I told you so.”

  33. headonaswivel says: Nov 2, 2012 8:33 AM

Justin, this is not news to anyone… we’re talking about the Steelers after all.

  34. FinFan68 says: Nov 2, 2012 8:34 AM

As crazy as Harbaugh often is, he was right in his assessment. This is another obvious attempt to influence the officials prior to the game. That seems to be becoming a trend this year as that is twice for NYG and the NYJ did it prior to the Pats game. Maybe it’s a NY thing to go to the media rather than talk to the refs before the game like the rest of the teams no doubt do.

  35. neilpountney says: Nov 2, 2012 8:35 AM

I am sick and tired of hearing this from fans now I have to put up with hearing it from the players. In keeping with this web site lets have some legal proof of your point or please just shut up and play the game!!!

  36. 49erstim says: Nov 2, 2012 8:37 AM

This team is so talented….why do they play this passive-aggressive game in the media basically begging the refs for calls?

  37. rahavort says: Nov 2, 2012 8:45 AM

Wow another Giant running their mouth? Shut up Justin, and stick to worrying about your football team and also your Subway commercials

  38. sudz28 says: Nov 2, 2012 8:46 AM

Game of the week – a battle of NFL nobility. This Steelers fan has respect for the Giants organization. (See article on Yahoo! Sports)

  40. greglloydrules says: Nov 2, 2012 8:59 AM

JPP will get some licks. Tuck won’t get close to Ben. I have a feeling that he’ll get so frustrated he gets ejected.

  41. cereal blogger says: Nov 2, 2012 8:59 AM

The Steelers have been preaching cheating to their players since the 70’s, everyone knows it….get over it Tuck

  42. stlsteelerfan says: Nov 2, 2012 9:01 AM

If the Steelers o-line is cheating, they don’t do a very good job of it.

  43. pop562 says: Nov 2, 2012 9:04 AM

There goes the Giants, trying to get to their opponents head and create controversy. I’m not surprised, they did a lot of talking and they win a Super Bowl…I guess the more you talk and make accusation the higher the probability you get calls your way.

  44. jsebastiao says: Nov 2, 2012 9:06 AM

  45. regisphilbin says: Nov 2, 2012 9:07 AM

You should have watched the Jags play the Packers. Its almost like the refs felt like they needed to help the Packers. We’re use to it by now, after 10 years of Payton Manning.

  47. giantsfanlewis says: Nov 2, 2012 9:14 AM

I’ve been a giants fan all my life. Born during the second super bowl run, had my immune system reset during the 3rd and had my daughter during the 4th and even I want the giants to shut up and just play. It’s getting annoying how much they talk. I used o love that they didn’t talk to much but now they act like the pats or packers and its sad because we are not usually like that. I just hope eventually they just shut up and play.

P.s. saints fans, tell your team to do the same, maybe they could win a game and we wouldn’t have to hear about bounty gate. Win win

  48. costaki21 says: Nov 2, 2012 9:15 AM

Sounds like Justin is hungry , he’s not himself when he’s hungry. He should try that footlong he advertises

  49. gochargersgo says: Nov 2, 2012 9:16 AM

Giants and their fans constantly tell everyone how theyre team doesn’t talk smack, how theyre the model franchise, everyone disrespects them and pays them no respect, etc.

Reality: They do all the talking. They disrespect everyone else. Say what you want about the patriots, colts, whoever. They won with class. No youtube videos of a bunch of grown men acting like toddlers stamping around singing how they have rings. No talking about how great they were.

  50. oldirtyman says: Nov 2, 2012 9:19 AM

Don’t worry Tuck we only commit holds on good players

  51. dirtydrew says: Nov 2, 2012 9:22 AM

I’m tired of the Giants players and coaches trying to influence the officials before a big game.

  52. steelerfanjo says: Nov 2, 2012 9:23 AM

That would eb the Ravens first of all. Giants – you guys lineup offsides on the DL and the refs look t he other way, so shut up.

  53. napoleonblownapart6887 says: Nov 2, 2012 9:23 AM

To be honest, this bit is getting a little tired – and its not just the Giants. It seems most of the league tries to use the press to get some gamesmanship and attention. While the Giants happen to be guilty of it lately, they’re not alone. My Steelers have done it in the past as well – as have the Ravens, Jets, Pats, Cards, and 9ers (to name a few instances that I remember).

Line up and play the game. The refs will sort out the rest.

  54. eddardofthehousestark says: Nov 2, 2012 9:23 AM

The Giants sure love to call out their opponents for penalties. Have they seen what they get away with? In the game against Dallas Dez Bryant was sexually assaulted on a deep ball and it didn’t get called. Chris Snee holds 75% of the time and gets away with it. Osi Umenyiora isn’t good anymore so all he can do is hold. The Giants truly get away with murder, but Goodell is a Giants fan (Google it: Roger Goodell literally grew up a Giants fan), so they get away with whatever they want.

  55. yeeeeeep says: Nov 2, 2012 9:32 AM

  56. skinsfaninnebraska says: Nov 2, 2012 9:33 AM

Tuck is right. I’ve watched a few Steelers games this year, and their O line holds more than any other I’ve seen in quite a while but flags are rarely thrown.

  57. kev86 says: Nov 2, 2012 9:45 AM

Eli is going to carve up the Steelers weak defense.

  58. daryllh says: Nov 2, 2012 9:45 AM

Some players and teams need motivation and drama like this to get ready for a big game. As a Steelers fan, I think it will probably work.

  61. patriotsfanfromindia says: Nov 2, 2012 9:59 AM

Yeah right! SB 42. That freakin’ helmet catch, Mr. Eli Manning was given all of 6 seconds (go check the replay & time it) after two patriot defenders had reached him and he still needed a bloody miracle with the pass. And Tuck talks about bias. SMH

Goodell (a NY Jet employee) couldn’t stand the Patriots winning when he had fined them for something everybody did, much less win with perfection.

The NY teams have absolutely been molly coddled by this commissioner. It’s not just the cowboys, redskins even non-conference teams like steelers et al. have been complaining.

  65. keeppounding says: Nov 2, 2012 10:19 AM

  66. vincentbojackson says: Nov 2, 2012 10:19 AM

The difference is, Tuck’s the only one crying about it publicly every week.

You can’t cry about refs anymore after they handed you a win against the Packers. You can however enjoy watching the Hawks’ undefeated season play out on the HD TV in Pete Carroll’s head.

  80. 1phd says: Nov 2, 2012 11:55 AM

After watching half a season it’s obvious that every team is getting away with murder. Every week, game in and game out, I see blatant holds and pass interference penalties NOT being called. What’s up with the refs, are they afraid to make calls since they came back?

  81. Deb says: Nov 2, 2012 12:09 PM

Apparently the Giants don’t think they can win a game on the merits of their play, so they try to jack up the officials ahead of time in hopes they’ll throw a few extra flags in their favor. Well, that’s one way to tip the scales, Tuck.

  82. radrntn says: Nov 2, 2012 12:11 PM

there is no doubt about that the steelers o-line not only holds , but actually pulls d-lineman to the ground, and never get called. They have been getting away with it for a good 4 -5 years right now.
Prior the most obvious guy on every play was Kemoeatu. Refs have to much impacts on the game..

  83. delsol1872 says: Nov 2, 2012 12:24 PM

There’s a reson why Ben has so much time to throw, sometimes the o-line brings guys to the ground and it’s never called. They hook, hold and pull guys down with the best of them, just everyone else gets called for it and they don’t….they’re gonna miss the playoffs anyway, hope the Giants roll em

  84. ampatsisahypocrite says: Nov 2, 2012 12:25 PM

When did the Giants become such a bunch of whiny batches? Between Tuck and Gilbride they could start a girl-scout troop. Maybe they should go watch tape of “Clutch-and-Grab” Snee dancing with his opponent, and then complain to the league about HIM too.

    Whine on girls!

  85. justintuckrule says: Nov 2, 2012 12:47 PM

Gettin pretty tired of the Giants whining every week about respect, game clock, refs, opponents, etc.

They got away with murder vs. the Redskins when the refs took 11 points off the board on horrible calls.

Ask the 49ers if they got away with murder last year when the Bradshaw “non-fumble” kept the Giants from losing the NFC champ.

You know what really is murder? Having your team owner be the head of a competition committee that docks a division rival $18M cause they didn’t engage in collusion and DIDN’T break any rules (as the NFL openly admitted).

Would love to see how the Giants looked $18M short this year and couldn’t pay these salaries:

    Eli $1.75M
    Tuck $3.2M
    Osi $2.5M
    JPP $1M
    Cruz $500K
    Bradshaw $3M
    Bennett $2.5M
    Prince $750K
    Blackburn $1M
    Nicks $750K
    Kiwi $1M

That’s how it goes when you’re the league’s pet.

Somebody said it above, and it’s true. We’ve been watching James Harrison get mugged for years — the holding is a joke. Yet you never once heard Harrison whine in public about it. Take a lesson in manhood, Tuck.

I’m a 49er fan, but I do like the giants. I wished they’d shut up every now and again

Every fan of every other team always agrees that the Steelers get more calls an non-calls that it is unbelievable. They literally had a Superbowl handed to them.

I still think the GIANTS win, and unfortunately I cannot watch this game, due to business travel tomorrow, but I am sure it will not be called fair and down the middle.
