tatooed1 you really aren't very savvy about QB's. Alex Smith couldn't carry Joe's jock. If you think they are similar I'm not even going to waste my time pointing out all of the things Joe did that Alex never will be able to do. He's much more like Jim Everett than anybody. And stats mean squat. Jeff Garcia has better stats than Joe and his last pass as a Niner was 10 yards off the mark. If Harbaugh really trusted him he would let him throw long more. Great QB's make plays on third downs to keep drives alive. Alex is a reliable average QB, nothing more.

Most of you people on here don't know how great QBs are. Joe Montana played the same exact way Alex Smith plays now. Obviously most of you guys are too young to even know that. Joe nearly always threw check down passes to Craig, Rathman, as well as Rice. What made Joe really good was that those guys he threw to were YAC receivers. ie... John Taylor, Freddie Solomon. Tom Brady was the same way also in his first 3 Super Bowl championships. He had a great defense, great kicker, Cory Dillon, and Brady always threw check down passes. Another example, Ben Rothlisberger. He will trow deep when he needs to but mist of the time it's check down passes. So before you adolescent fans knock on any QB in the NFL, get your facts in order you young bucks!!!

I would much rather have a QB like Alex Smith that has flashes of greatness and is mediocre all the time than someone like Mike Vick, who is great most of the time and has flashes of crap. Who cares if qb's throw for 400 yards a game if they have 3+ interceptions?

On a side note, did anyone notice how their reciever corps was doing by the end of last year? Gore was beat to hell, Crabtree was injured, Josh Morgan had a broken leg, Kyle Williams was suffering from multiple concussions...All we really had was our tight end Mr. Davis. This year our depth at the receiver and running back positions is great. So YES. The 49ers are a better team. On a side note, its not always the best team that wins. Heck. Look at the Giants.

Well that’s stupid considering he already has.

How quickly people forget this guy single handily willed the 9ers to victory over the Saints in the playoffs last year. Remember that, when the defense that’s been “carrying” Alex gave up a bajillion points and yards

We also remember how the next week he led them to a 1-13 showing on 3rd down in a game that mattered even more

A case can be made here because supposedly the 9ers have a 6-2 record with an arguably tougher schedule than last year. So maybe they are in fact better.

It continues to baffle me how people continue to bad mouth Alex Smith. There is only one statistic that matters in the NFL and that is won/ loss percentage. Since the start of last season AS is 20 and 6. If you think that he isn’t responsible for that than you are just plain STUPID.

If that is the case then Ryan and Schaub are the best QBs in the NFL.

typical miserable lions fan.

niners are a better team, no excuses the giants beat them good last time and i believe they had an off day against the vikings but i truly believe if our niners face the giants in the playoffs harbaugh wont get beat twice by the same team, all im saying is defense wins championships and OUR NINERS have the best D, stacked with talent, innovative coaching staff and a qb that may not be great but doesnt make mistakes and is very efficient and shown he can have monster games just ask saints fans lol

3 weeks before he set a franchise record for completion percentage, Alex and the Niner offense set a franchise record for yards in one single game.

He had a severe finger injury at the end of that record setting Bills game (on his throwing hand). He played through his injury against the Giants and Seahawks. He's not the kind of guy to use injuries as excuses so it doesn't surprise me that after 11 days off to heal - he came out with his best game as a Niner against the one-time division leading Cards.

We'll see what the stretch drive brings. The Monday night game against Chicago will be a good barometer of how the Niners will fare this year.

Wow. Gather round haters gather round! We gotta talk about Alex smith again. Lol Alex smith was just one completion away from breaking the highest completion percentage in a game. NFL record. He also broke the franchise record for highest qbr this month. Twice. He's far from a game manager. He's a quarterback. A quarterback that runs a very complex intricate good offense.

Yup, Alex is an average NFL QB. Does anyone know of any Pro-Bowlers that were available at the trade deadline? (Peyton didn't want to play here, what can they do??) Alex really doesn't bring anything special to the table, but also doesn't make a lot of stupid mistakes that cost us games. I'm happy to call him a game manager.

So I guess not having an elite QB is the Niner's "weakness". Unlike the other 20 or so teams in the league without a very good QB, the Niners have top talent at just about every other position on the field (WR is average too). So if the Alex has a below average game, we are very beatable. But if he has an above average day (for him) good luck with that "blueprint".

How are they better?

They still have the same terrible QB. Smith is exposed against the tougher Defenses, and the Vikings laid out the blue print on how to beat them.
