Chris Canty not flagged, but fined for hit on Tony Romo

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Romo is hit by New York Giants defensive tackle Canty in the first half of their NFL football game in Arlington Reuters

Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty got away without a penalty for a hit on Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean it was legal in the eyes of the league office.

The NFL has confirmed that Canty was fined $15,750 for roughing the passer because he struck Romo with the crown of his helmet after Romo threw a pass in Sunday’s game.

The fact that Canty wasn’t flagged on the play indicates that the referee missed a penalty that should have been 15 yards and an automatic first down for the Cowboys, in a game the Giants would end up winning 29-24.

Canty had a big game against Romo, sacking him once and hitting him after he passed three times. But one of those hits should have been flagged.

I saw the game, and yes by definition it was a penalty. It was ticky tack though. He barely touched him and he wasn’t trying to drill him with his helmet.. but yes, it should have been a flag.

So if there’s so many fines doled out on plays that didn’t even draw flags, why aren’t the refs and officials being investigated for not making calls on plays that could potentially hurt someone? Why aren’t they being held accountable? Fines are nothing for these millionaires. If the league fines the hitter why wouldn’t they look into the ref/s who clearly missed the call? Maybe they should be fined too. Isn’t someone who lets these hits go unflagged as guilty as the guy who made the hit? You know the replacement refs would be getting drilled for missing such critical calls. I’m not saying that a flag during the game when the play occurs would prevent the hit/possible injury so much as I’m saying that the refs are missing these calls and nothing is being done to hold them accountable (that I’ve heard of anyway).

we should take up a collection for Chris, that was an entertaining hit. I went back on dvr and recorded the slow-mo version to my smart phone. I’ve been showing people it for days.

Yet the Giants continue to whine and cry about how the refs, game clock staff, and league are out to get them, and how other teams are the ones who get away with uncalled penalties.

  7. taintedlombardis says: Nov 3, 2012 8:55 AM

Hmmmm…that’s two NFC East match ups as of late (which also just happens to be against the two teams which Mara deemed “violated the spirit of the cap”) where the refs screwed the pooch…in favor of the Giants in tight games…

  8. drewfl says: Nov 3, 2012 9:02 AM

weak.. Tony Romo deserves it for all those stupid interceptions he throws

  9. daninms says: Nov 3, 2012 9:16 AM

When has a personal foul call for a hit ever been called on Romo to begin with ?!

  10. pixelito says: Nov 3, 2012 9:19 AM

If rigging the game-clock wasn’t enough to help the Cowboys win, don’t whine about penalties nobody saw.

Ripster, the refs are evaluated, we just don’t get to hear about it. Maybe we should.

I’m a huge cowboys fan, in fact I’ve only missed two games over the last 10 years and those have been the last two weeks due to my Moto hobby. I have been supporting Romo like crazy but this year he is sucking it up! I am hoping that if he throws 2 to 3 picks in Sundays game that he gets benched in favor of Orton just to show him that he is not that good. He needs a wake up call. This defense can win playoff games. This offense can get you a top ten pick in the draft. And Jason Garret needs to go. His robotic, emotionless, Princeton predictable offense needs to go. He understands what needs to happen out there, but when it’s time to make the big play call, call the timeout or have the team spike a ball.. He freezes.

Yet u couldn’t take a hit like that & get up, but yet Romo’s a loser. U post on a site & Romo’s a loser. He’s playin QB in the NFL & he’s a loser. Sounds like to me U are a LOSER. I mean I don’t know he makes millions & u post comments on a football site. Maybe u should be fined for being a loser.

just like the missed P.I. call near the end of the game? The flag that was picked up?? Who does that??

  18. amaf21 says: Nov 3, 2012 11:24 AM

clean hit. poor job by the refs!

Barely hit his helmet. If the nfl is going to fine what is a 98% textbook hit, canty should have taken romo’s head off. Goodell has ruined the game. By the way…tainteombardis.. You’re one bitter dude. Cowboys still scored on that drive so the missed call didn’t affect anything.

He’s almost 7 feet tall. Clean hit.

Cowboys turn the corner this week against the Falcons. They are not as bad as they’ve been playing. As for you Giant fans, you sound like us Cowboy fans in the 90’s. enjoy it while it lasts. It always cycles.

Most people that comment here, no nothing about the game. Romo, at the beginning of this, his eighth season is 3rd in NFL history for passer rating. He is if not a championship quarterback, he is a very, very, good quarterback. If Mr. Jones were to provide the Romo with better supporting staff at some, not all positions, then you would see him win championships. Take Terry Bradshaw, who according to statistics, was mediocre at best, yet won four out of four championship games. The Steelers of the 70’s provided Bradshaw with an impenetrable offensive line, and great receivers. How many seconds did Bradshaw typically have to throw the ball? Possibly 7-8? He was a downfield passer who more times than not took a 7 step drop. There was not a “west coast” offense in Pittsburgh. The point is, in the games he won, Bradshaw almost never got his uniform dirty. Romo is constantly under the gun. He makes plays with his feet, and he also gets into trouble with his feet. His OL needs to be more aggressive and fire out on pass plays. I was never a fan of the drop back, set-up style of pass blocking. When I played, I wanted to knock a guy on his ass, then sit on him. In any block, there is a sweet spot, just like on a baseball bat, where you have maximum force and very little reverberation. They need to find that area on there primary opponent. Concussions happen when the “sweet” spot is missed. Everyone has an achilles heel. Find it, Cowboys OL!

Are all these pathetic giants fans serious right now? You guys won the game and you still can’t be humble enough to admit when a dirty play happened and you got away with it? This is why nobody likes Giants fans. Egomaniacs that live their through the success of their football team because their own personal accomplishments are non existent.

I’m taking bets for when coughlin has a heart attack on the sidelines! He is the biggest baby of all the couches.
They pulled out the W bc of Dez’s couple of fingers–lucky, and he is bitching about the fact he thinks Dallas got extra time? Plz! Take your lucky W and start preparing for your next game!!

Hey gagee, romo is real great in the stats book, i agree, just like dan marino. They were good at filling the stands up with folks which lined the owners pockets but couldnt win the big ones when they counted
