Report: Vick, Reid had “heart-to-heart” meeting

Andy Reid, Michael Vick AP

After weeks of equivocation, Eagles coach Andy Reid said that Mike Vick will remain the starting quarterback indefinitely, and that it won’t be a week-to-week proposition.

The declaration, the veracity of which some are questioning, came after a “heart-to-heart” meeting between Reid and Vick, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports.

Per Cole, the meeting occurred “a few days after Vick publicly suggested he might be benched,” and it was “extremely productive.”  Cole reports that Reid decided he “might have lost his players psychologically” if Vick had been benched.

Cole offers quotes from an unnamed Eagles defensive player to prove the point that Reid would have lost the locker room if the switch had been made from Vick to rookie Nick Foles.

Still, given that Reid has contradicted multiple past public proclamations, it’s hard not to wonder whether the commitment to Vick is aimed at getting him to quit worrying about whether the next mistake will be his last mistake.  If he plays well and the Eagles win, Reid won’t have to go back on his word, again.  If Vick continues to struggle and the team continues to lose, whether Reid is criticized for not being honest will be the least of the coach’s problems.

Reid knows he needs to get to the postseason, at a minimum, to survive.  If the Vick-to-Nick change would have caused Reid to lose the locker room, the task would have been much harder, even if Nick Foles played like Joe Montana.

lol right. Vick is benched then traded/cut at the end of the season.

It’s good they had this meeting. It’s always nice to get together with a co-worker to say goodbye and exchange contact information when you know you will both be unemployed in the near future.

Reid: If you don’t play better im gonna have to bench you!

Vick: if I don’t play better you’re gonna get fired!

End of heart to heart conversation.

some news report everybody knew about this meeting on tuesday.

I’m not an Eagles fan or a Vick fan, but Vick is not to blame for that team’s ineptitudes. Sieve of a defense and receivers near the bottom of the league in yards after the catch. A “star” RB averaging 4.0 ypc (good for a scrub, but not a star), and a bad O-Line. Can’t blame vick for this. The guy’s tied for the most game winning drives in the NFL this year too.

You can blame him for fumbling too much earlier on, but that’s about it.

That’s funny. If the players are this bad when Andy has the locker room, how much worse would they be if he lost it? Everyone this year should be playing to showcase themselves for next year, regardless of who the coach is as next year they may be looking for work.

Also, a coach who starts people based on a locker room popularity contest is a coach who should be looking for a new job.

Reid To Vick: if you can’t win against the worst defense in football, than I have to bench ya kid.

absolutely last chance and moment for Reid and Vick cause the pressure meter is on code red 9 of 10…

“Cole offers quotes from an unnamed Eagles defensive player to prove the point that Reid would have lost the locker room if the switch had been made from Vick to rookie Nick Foles.”

Great….because the last thing anyone wants is to upset that gang of underachievers.

  9. gripless says: Nov 3, 2012 11:39 AM

Perhaps the conversation went like this, “So coach, what are we going to do after this season?”

“Cole reports that Reid decided he “might have lost his players psychologically” if Vick had been benched”.

    I’m not buying it…..

QB Nick Foles is the future for this team, if anything he could give them a spark.

Waah wahh wah…You get paid to do your job regardless of who the coaches decide to put on the field with you. This whole “lose the locker room” is a joke.

  12. tigrrrr says: Nov 3, 2012 11:48 AM

smoke and mirrors by reid..vick is gone soon…playing with vicks head for the moment is not rocket science, pure childs play.

  13. deadeye says: Nov 3, 2012 11:49 AM

The Eagles were fools for giving Vick a 100 million dollar contract. The dude was a world class scat back masquerading as QB.

Vick lacks pocket awareness, has no pre-snap ability to read a defense, relies on scrambling too much, and lacks the work ethic to excel at QB. On top of that he is physically too small which results in getting injured easily and turning it over too much.

History will remember him as the most dynamic, exciting, failure the NFL has ever seen at QB.

Eagles fans are a joke. When the team looks good after the draft, they are the Dream Team. When they lose a few games, it’s time to fire the entire coaching staff and trade your star qb. Watch what happens when they win their next 5 straight….they’ll all be talking about the road to the sb goes through the Linc. Dopes.

  15. electionconfidential says: Nov 3, 2012 11:52 AM

The Eagles owner has a Manning type question to answer. If my whole team is stinking up the place do I really need a $100 million QB?? The answer is no. He’ll let Reid finish the season the way Reid chooses to. That way there’s not a huge backlash against him. Then he’ll bring in a new coach and new QB in the off-season.

Things being what they are with the whole team he might want to consider a new GM too.

  16. snowpea84 says: Nov 3, 2012 12:14 PM

Oh good. That solves the problems on offense. After a decade in the league this will fix Vicks deficiencies. Thats all he needed, was a heart to heart.

  17. alexnexus says: Nov 3, 2012 12:15 PM

so… everything this web site has said in the past about this issue was pointless?

great reporting guys: vick stays put and andy didn’t contradicted himself… again.

    go eagles!

  18. ncs115 says: Nov 3, 2012 12:34 PM

We let up 6 scores on the first 6 drives against Atlanta and Andy is concerned about losing the psychi of the team? That bus left weeks ago. Vick already quit on this team and asked to be bench. Make it happen!

  19. usmutts says: Nov 3, 2012 12:44 PM

Michael Vick is the Allen Iverson of the NFL.

  20. realitypolice says: Nov 3, 2012 12:50 PM

    Cost Reid the locker room?

So it’s more important to Eagles players that their friend keeps his job despite playing terribly and being a turn over machine than the coaching staff trying to put the best possible team on the field.

    Got it.

Yeah, I was too kind with my 6-10 prediction. If this keeps up, they’ll be lucky to get to 6 wins.

  22. wizahdry says: Nov 3, 2012 1:03 PM

This is why Reid will be fired after the season, He has lost the locker room. You can’t let the locker room influence decision on what is best for the team to win.

Here in Tampa players are upset that Talib was traded. This is despite him letting the team down several times with numerous off the field issues and suspensions. Players think they are a family and don’t want to lose their “homey.” Reality is it’s a competitive job and if someone isn’t getting the job done a change must be made.

NFL tickets and home packages are expensive. Fans don’t want to pay that premium to see garbage. I’m sure the people of Philly have enough things happening to be depressed about and don’t need a QB adding to it.

This team just needs a complete overhaul after this season. New GM, new coach

  31. flyeredup says: Nov 3, 2012 1:46 PM

    Nick Foles < John Skelton

  32. bigbluefan1 says: Nov 3, 2012 2:03 PM

That could not turn out well
Vick does not have a heart and Andy well after all those years of chesse steaks doubt his is beating all that well.

  33. seanx40 says: Nov 3, 2012 2:35 PM

I hate Michael Vick with a passion. I do not think he should have been allowed back in the NFL. That said, this isn’t his fault. His O-Line sucks. His WR’s aren’t that great. While I greatly enjoy seeing him get knocked around, it isn’t good football. Or good management by the Eagles. At least this sideshow ends in 2 months.

  34. jp4120 says: Nov 3, 2012 3:49 PM

as a 40 year eagles fan and former season ticket holder…let me say I hate Reid and Vick with a passion and wish they both were gone tomorrow.
wish nothing but bad things for this team until both are gone. I am also fed up with our wuss of an owner…he must be afraid of his own shadow to sit there and take this nonsense without pulling a Jerry Jones or Steinbrenner and firing somebody on the spot…..

  35. sfm073 says: Nov 3, 2012 7:45 PM

This has become so obnoxious. The eagles are a mediocre team, Vick is a mediocre QB and Reid is a mediocre coach and yet they get coverage as if they are some type of legendary dynasty.

  36. eaglesfan29 says: Nov 3, 2012 8:19 PM

IF vick shouldn’t have been allowed back in the NFL, then what should they have done with the rapist the steelers have. I guess when you rape women or kill a human being i guess thats okay and we can forgive you, some you up here are stupid as hell. VICK do your thing and lets make this run eagles to the playoffs

  37. 1standinches says: Nov 4, 2012 1:00 AM

Vick.. Dont you know that the “Bird is the Word?!”

  38. ocgunslinger says: Nov 4, 2012 10:30 AM

Vick has obviously made some bad choices in life.

Setting that aside as far as a QB in the NFL he has limitations and yet possesses certain skills. Unfortunately his style and comprehension of play will never allow him to be a Manning (either of them), a Brady or a Brees. He is an injury prone but overall average QB who might take a team to the playoffs again but never to the SB.

I would take Tebow over Vick as a backup QB.
