Unfortunately it’s just part of the game. You don’t see professional boxers suing for the brain damage they suffer. They know the risks going in and they are paid well for their efforts.

Working in the medical field and being hit in the head a few times myself, I know the risk of concussions and I’m 50/50 on the situation, I do believe the player should take his own health into consideration, however if he wants to play he can simply hit any ER, get a CT scan, a radiologist will gladly tell you if your brain needs rest, or if your cleared to play.
Anybody who’s played sports at any level can tell you the desire to be out there with your teammates, and in the world of sports you don’t want people to ever assume your “soft” because you lose a mental edge over your opponent who will instantly try and dominate you, and if that guy senses any blow to your head may put you out, your getting contact all game long, and thats in any “full contact” sport.

I wonder if you would feel the said,e it was your son whose life permanently affected by head injury if you would feel he same way. furthermore out remind me a politicians who are for war because they know there sons and daughters will be sleeping safe In sound in their beds while your kids risk their lives.

Monty Williams is talking about Anthony Davis not being able to even fly with the team. Davis is from the Chicago area and paid for his friends and family to go to the game. It is one thing to not be able to play, but to not even let him travel with the team is a little much. That is what Monty is referring too….

The quotes don’t seem as bad when you read the real article and see Monty Williams quotes in their entirety.

In short, it seems like he understands there’s a protocol and he wants his players protected, but as a coach he obviously has the desire to want his guys to play. He even says he’s being a “baby about it.”

Sounds like a coach conflicted instead of a coach intentionally being a douche.

If people didn’t come back and try to sue the leagues or blame them for their injuries, this probably wouldn’t be such an issue. Yeah, these can be serious injuries but if a player would accept that and move on with his life after sports without coming back and holding someone else responsible that would be the “man” referred to in the story. Unfortunately that’s not the case so the league has to take actions to protect itself. It’s not the current players that look weak because of the meassures taken by the leauge, it’s the retired players that are in this day of legal action at the drop of a hat when there’s a possibility of financial gain, IMO. Those old-school players talk like they were bullet-proof yet it seems like every one of them is maimed for life if there’s $$$ involved. Hopefully Williams won’t be suing the NBA over his concusions whenever that ball gets rolling.

I think the choice should be up to the player. Educate him about the risks of playing with a concussion, show him what has happened to athletes who have suffered multiple concussions, but these athletes are grown men and the final say on whether they play or not should be their choice to make.

The problem I see with the Coach’s comment is this.., Next time a player is possibly thinking he maybe concussed, the player will try to ignore the problem for risk of thinking that Their own coach will believe them to be soft and girly… Hiding it from the coach and risking long term health issues…

It appears a lot of the commenters here have also taken a hit to the head. Only, it’s not really just a “hit to the head”, is it? Lets refer to it what it really is. Brain damage. That’s what a concussion is. It is nothing less. And, since your brain is kind of important, and can only heal itself, it takes a little bit of time. If that means a human being with brain damage has to miss a few games of basketball so that he doesn’t suffer long term brain damage, then so be it.

Great quote, Monty, and I definitely agree.

Men used to be men in this country. Now they’re increasingly soft and wimpy, and lack courage. Not because we are that way inherently, but because of “society” and “soccer moms” and the entire culture that has “doctors” recommending that teenagers play touch football until they’re 15. America has wittingly or unwittingly manufactured this wimpiness on a nationwide basis.

I agree. What did football players think that smashing together people at high speeds, all who weigh well over 200LBS. Of course your hiring your body/brain. I have always thought the leagues recent attack on concussions is nothing more than a PR stunt.

I don’t see anything wrong with the coaches statements. Williams knew the kid couldn’t go and nothing would change that, so he publicly took the stance that he will support his players wish to travel and play. He’s got nothing to loose by taking that position. Had he echoed the leagues position, maybe Davis develops a little animosity toward the coach?

I think you are being a little harsh and missing the point of Monty Williams comments. This is not the NFL which ignored the effects of head to head collisions. The NBA is telling a man who took a shot to the head you have to prove you are not hurt before you can play. Why not institute the same mandate for boxing. I don’t think you ignore the collision but we should also be monitoring the situation. Then based on the man and what he feels as an individuals.
