Payton, Brees dynamic complicates coach’s status

Hall Of Fame Football

Suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, left, and Saints quarterback Drew Brees get reacquainted prior to Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremonies at Fawcett Stadium Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 in Canton, Ohio. Payton was given special permission from the NFL to attend the event. The report that Saints coach Sean Payton could/will be a free agent after the 2012 season raises plenty of interesting angles.

Here’s another one.

Quarterback Drew Brees will definitely need an explanation.

Brees signed a long-term deal with the Saints, surely under the impression that Payton will be back. If he’s not, that will be a problem.

And even if Commissioner Roger Goodell doesn’t merit blame for an outcome that would result in Payton leaving, plenty of fans will blame Goodell -- especially if Brees vents his frustration by pointing to the entire bounty fiasco as the first domino that resulted in Payton leaving town.

So, yes, things are going to getting very interesting as the end of the season approaches.
