Chiefs cut Stanford Routt

In bringing back an old friend, the Chiefs ended up parting ways with a relatively new arrival.

According to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs have waived cornerback Stanford Routt to create a roster spot for defensive tackle Shaun Smith.

Routt, who signed with the Chiefs after being cut by the Raiders in the offseason, started seven games and made two interceptions for the season.  He signed a three-year, $19.6 million deal with Kansas City, pocketing a $4 million signing bonus.  He’ll be entitled to receive the balance of his $1.8 million base salary as termination pay — unless someone claims him on waivers.  Either way, Routt will get the rest of his 2012 pay.

Factoring in $5 million he received from the Raiders in guaranteed money despite being cut, it’s been a pretty good year for Routt.

Apart from being cut twice.

  1. This is the first time Scott Pioli has ever admitted a mistake and cut a bad starter like this. He’s getting desperate.

  2. Wow….

As a Raider’s fan this really surprises me.
KC peeps… what is the “scoop” here?

Was it to save money… was there a blowup with
another coach or player? Has to be more to this
    story right?

Not saying he’s awesome… but to be flat out cut?

    Wow.

  3. Raiders are already paying most of his earned money this year and they are desperate for secondary help. I hate to say it, but put a claim in for him. It couldn’t get any worse.

  4. I’d love to have Routt back in Oakland. He’s very talented and was a lock down guy for UA two years ago.. I believe last year was Breshnahan causing Routt all the problems.

Well, the trade deadline has passed, and they needed a roster spot.

  6. Hope he hires a smart financial guy to invest that money wisely. Is there anywhere else to go if you’re not good enough to play for the lowly Chiefs?

  7. I don’t think Brandon Carr would have resigned with the Chiefs for any amount of money. But the fact that Routt was touted as the equal replacement for Carr by the organization was ridiculous at the time, and now it’s ridonkulous.

There aren’t any more superlatives for “suck” to describe this front office. Just put them out of their misery now, because I’m not giving the Chiefs anymore of my time until that happens.

  8. Lions could use him. Their D has been decent but now the hard part of the schedule is coming up. Rogers twice, Matty Ice, Luck and Cutler….Get him now!

  9. This Raider fan isn’t laughing, because it was the Raiders who took the huge cap hit when we cut him and Al Davis’ foolish lucrative contract for Routt contributed to us being in cap hell this year….which was a reason why we couldn’t retain Michael Bush.

  10. Had to cut him, his name was too closely associated with what happened to them each time they lined up on Sunday.

  11. I’m even gonna say Miami, Nolan Carrol and Jimmy Wilson were clearly exposed during the Colts game and another body to throw in to mix things up and give some rest to the others could really help.

  12. Stanford Routt cut.
    Shaun Smith signed.
Gary Gibbs takes over DC duties.

Why does the phrase “rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic” come to mind?

  13. Well it could be worse in KC but not by much. After all it’s not like the Chiefs have gone a DECADE without a winning season.

  14. I’m thinking his comments about how he’s happy getting paid by 2 AFC West teams didn’t help his cause.

This was another massive blunder by Pioli.

  15. would fit nicely in Rex Ryan’s defense as a short term Darelle Revis replacement. Tannenbaum is desperately trying to save his job as well.

  16. All of you folks clamoring for him just stop. He was drafted because of his 40 time. The guy can run really fast in a straight line, but he has zero instincts as a football player. Soft tackler, poor ball skills, can’t stay with WR’s who run any sort of route and led the league in defensive holding calls last year. He was picked on all day when Oakland played them last week. At the very best his only chance to be successful on the field is as a gunner on special teams. I know there are teams desperate for help in the secondary but believe me this guy is NOT the answer.

  17. The Lions should make a waiver claim–he can’t be any worse than Jacob Lacey…

colts fan here, and i feel your pain, i was surprised anybody even signed that guy, he is beyond tuuurrible

  18. And all this matters because….???

A better topic would be how many points Pittsburgh & Todd Haley’s offense is going to hang on the Chiefs next Monday night because you know Todd would love to be the catalyst that gets Pioli fired.

No way is Haley taking his foot off the gas.

  19. NY Giants are you watching?!?! Here is your chance at a quality cb!! We need him!! Go get him now!! With packers n saints coming up we cant afford webster n a bunch of high school corners! And please giants fans dont say webster good he cant stop a pathetic cowboys receiver if they had their hands tied!!

Why is this surprising? The Raiders did the EXACT SAME THING LAST YEAR! Except the Raiders paid him instead of Nhamdi! Nhamdi > Carr

  21. Tomlin will…..

  22. Hey fourth, if you want revenge, take a pay cut and come to denver. They still have the chiefs twice on the schedule but the broncos are looking for someone with their same culture.

  23. I am relieved to see Stanford Routt cut by the Chiefs. What a Terrible signing by Pioli. Certainly not good enough to replace Brandon Carr. Routt’s performance against Tampa Bay might be the worst day by a corner back in NFL history. Mike Williams made Routt his Beeotch.

Hopefully this is the sign of things to come and Clark Hunt will sprout a pair and clean house.
