Stanford Routt clears waivers

AP

The agent for cornerback Stanford Routt was shocked by the Chiefs’ decision to cut him.  The agent likely is perplexed, then, by the fact that no one claimed Routt’s contract on waivers.

That’s precisely what happened, per a source with knowledge of the situation.

As a result, Routt becomes a free agent, able to sign with any team.  He also will be entitled to collect the balance of his $1.8 million base salary from the Chiefs as termination pay — and to keep what he gets paid by another team.

Given the $5 million guaranteed he received this year from the Raiders and the $6 million he’ll get from the Chiefs, getting $11 million to be fired twice in one year isn’t a bad deal.

I am amazed at how amazed I am that such circumstances can exist in the world of sports.

What’s wrong with his play that he’d be offered this much money and then fail to earn it on the field?

    He’s a starter, right?

    [mind boggles]

  2. From what I saw out of him (small sample, I admit) he was getting burned worse than D-Hall! Not shocking that someone didn’t put a claim in for him. They’re trying to get him cheaper than that re-donk contract the Chefs (i know) signed him to.

  3. Just goes to show you that players are way over paid. That is one reason I dont watch much pro football anymore.Look at the money some of these players make and then look at production.
Need to go back to the days of $100,000 players in all sports. The real american hero’s dont make squat for what they do.

  4. Pioli will clear waivers as well…

The NE tree doesn’t produce very good offspring. Though the Belichick teat is clearly priceless.

  5. It’s funny how being a really bad cornerback can pay off!

This scrub might end up being paid by three different NFL teams this season.

And two of them are paying him to be somewhere else….

  6. Lions are hurting for CBs … if he still wants to play we may have an interest. I haven’t heard Mayhew’s views on him.

But he’s gonna have to take a major pay cut.

  7. so the guy was starting on a decent contract then gets cut as a complete surprise to everyone midseason…

and now he clears waivers too?

something is up…. some of you sports reporters figure out what he did or didn’t do….

  8. He’s shocked?

Did he not see Moore running by him a few times a week or so ago?

No he didn’t. It was obvious. We know he had to see tape to know where the hell the guy was he should have been covering.

  9. He made $10 million more than what the NFL donated to clean up the Sandy relief efforts and now he will be on the Obama plan.. Something ain’t right with that.

  10. @randomguy9999…

He cleared waivers cause nobody wants to pick up the contract he signed. Why would anyone claim him when they can get him on the cheap after clearing waivers?

  11. “The real american hero’s dont make squat for what they do.”

    We salute you Mr. Pretends-to-not-watch-much-pro-football-anymore-then-spends-all-day-reading-pro-football-talk-website.

    Real men of genius.

  12. “Most likely won’t happen but I’d love to see him in that New England backfield!!!

    Let’s see it BB”

I don’t want him. The Patriots just traded for a talented cornerback in Aqib Talib why bring in a guy who can’t cut it for the Chiefs?

I’m not sure why everybody think this guy is that good. He’s not a scapegoat everybody in Kansas City is losing their jobs this year releasing a corner who is at the top of the league in penalties committed and who constantly gets picked on won’t change that.

  13. You are worth what someone will pay you. If you’re not signing his checks, why would you care what he makes? His salary doesn’t lessen your net income.

  14. You guys realize he’s the 99th rated CB this year so far? Everyone thinks he can improve any secondary right now, he might actually make your team worse.

  15. Mauldog,

The real heroes dont make hundreds of millions of dollars for other people (the players respective team owner).

I agree it’s messed up, but until people go out in tens of thousands (and pay premium prices) to watch firemen save a house, or police make a bust, or go buy their licensed merchandise, etc., the real heroes wont be paid how they “should” vs someone who can run fast and catch a ball.

  16. “The agent for cornerback Stanford Routt was shocked by the Chiefs’ decision to cut him. ”

But he’s not shocked by the fact that he’s making a mint off of a lousy CB…go figure.

  17. Buffalo was looking at him in February, not sure why they didn’t pull the trigger? Maybe they didn’t like what they seen in Routt? He is probably a different type of player when he is faced with stiff competition. One of those practice scene wonders.

  18. Wow, that’s all I can say. 11 mill. And my kid wanted to be an electrician. He was 6’5 and 210 when he was a junior in high school and didn’t play sports because it took up to much time. Like I said, wow.

  19. The Raiders and Chiefs both thought he was good. The rest of the NFL thought he wasn’t.

That sums up why the Raiders and Chiefs will be watching the playoffs from their Lazy Boys again this year.

  20. wow, 11 millions for being fired twice in a year. I need to hang around this guy because when i get fired im in debt. Routt call my agent (my agent is your agent, because we about to get paid)

  21. Here’s the deal on Routt. He isn’t a very good player period. I took him 5 years in the league to become a starter. When he did he was playing opposite Nnamdi Asomugha and, because of that, generally covered the opposing team’s second receiver. He didn’t do that all that well, and played horribly when he became the #1 corner last year when Nnamdi left.

He’s never tackled well, and above everything else he is a me first guy. He’s more concerned with his individual stats than how the D is playing. More than anything I would bet money it’s his attitude as to why the Raiders and Chiefs cut him. That’s also the reason the Raiders don’t want him back when they are so banged up at corner. That alone should tell you a lot. Good luck to any team that’s picks up this joker.

You mean the Romney plan? Cat ain’t worked for 10 years and made $20 million last year while only paying a 14% tax rate. And that was overstated since he gave $4 million to the magic underwear wearers but only claimed $2 million. Effective tax rate was probably really 12% but he did it pre-emptively since he planned on running. 12% tax rate is less than most restaurant servers pay. He sure bamboozled a lot of racist rednecks to get 49% of the popular vote.

  23. Something seems very odd about this. I mean, the guy was starting, and now not a single NFL teams wants him a WEEK later?

Why do I sense a possible leaked failed drug test with a suspension about to drop?

    WRONG.

    We’re talking about Routt…
Stanford Routt did work, just not to your standard (which is your opinion). Why should he be taxed more for working in a position that’s a higher value in America (NFL Player – and higher value by your own country’s choice, judging by TV ratings) than a restaurant server?

It’s not his fault he made the most of his life, while some of you want to collect free handouts for the rest of yours.

  26. Geniusfan- at the risk of patronizing you, I’m fairly aware that we’ve signed Aqib TAlib, and (bring on nay-sayers) I believe he is instantly our best DB. That being said….. The patriots cannot have enough of ’em. I say kick the damn tires on Routt and if BB sees something, add him. He may not be looking for break-the-bank contract and maybe wants to play for a contender. We can use him, for sure.

Long story short, if your content with our DB depth….. You’re one optimistic dude.

  27. @denverdude7: Routt was released by the RAIDERS when the new regime took over after Al Davis passed. That was the first move Big Reg made.

Please refrain from lumping the RAIDERS in with the chiefs- apples and oranges.

Also, you and the other haters are going to have to come up with some new material regarding the RAIDERS- Al Davis is gone, a new GM and HC are in place- the only thing that remains from Al are the Silver and Black, the rest is brand new.

    Pay attention haters…

  28. I liken Mr. Routt to a TURD. It’s looks and tastes good when you initially eat the food, then it enters your stomach and begins to get broken down. Next it turns to crap and is dumped out to the world where everybody stands and looks at it with a disgusted face.

  29. Why Detroit txspartan95? Cause that is where guys who no longer should be receiving checks work?
