Getty ImagesOne of the reasons cited for the recent downturn in the Giants passing game is the play of wide receiver Hakeem Nicks.
He had one monster game this season — 10 catches for 199 yards against the Buccaneers in Week Two — but has been held to 17 catches for 191 yards over his other five games. Nicks missed three games thanks to a knee injury earlier this season and some have connected the dots between that injuries and Nicks’ inability to find much separation from defenders in the last few weeks.
Nicks sat out Wednesday’s practice with swelling in the knee, raising the possibility that the Giants would sit him down this week and then use next week’s bye in order to get him ready to go for the final six games of the season. Nicks returned to practice on Thursday, though, and said that no one contemplated the more cautious approach.
“Yesterday was just taking a day off,” Nicks said, via Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger. “It was still a little swollen, a little puffy from the game like it always is after the game. This time it was just a little bit more puffy, so they wanted to sit me down for a day, and I got back out there today and everything was fine.”
We gave you some of Nicks’ stats up top, numbers that don’t interest Nicks in the least. He said Thursday that “stats is for girls,” which seems to have rubbed someone in the Giants organization the wrong way since a team spokesman felt it necessary to clarify that Nicks meant that stats were only important to players who were trying to impress girls.
However he might feel about the demon numbers, the Giants could use a day from Nicks that drives the ladies wild so they can head into the bye with a 7-3 record.
