Luck, Colts improve to 6-3 with win over Jaguars

In just nine games, the Indianapolis Colts have tripled their win total from a season ago.

Andrew Luck and the Colts won their fourth straight game and improved to 6-3 on the season with a 27-10 win over the hapless Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.

Luck went 18 of 26 for 227 yards with an interception and rushed for two touchdowns for the Colts.

Luck got plenty of help from the Colts defense as well. A unit that had forced only two turnovers all season forced three turnovers from the Jaguars. Cornerback Darius Butler intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown, and recovered a fumble for the Colts.

The Jacksonville offense continued their struggles without the availability of running back Maurice Jones-Drew. Backup Rashad Jennings managed just 27 yards on 11 carries.

Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert left the game early in the fourth quarter after being sacked by Colts’ safety Antoine Bethea. Gabbert landed hard on his left shoulder as he scrambled to his left and was attended to by the Jaguars’ training staff. Gabbert has a torn labrum in his left shoulder that has been an ongoing issue the last several weeks.

Gabbert was 18 of 31 for 209 yards and an interception at the time of the injury.

Chad Henne replaced Gabbert under center and actually breathed some life into the Jaguars’ offense. Henne led the Jaguars to their only touchdown of the night on a 4-yard touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts. He had the Jaguars on the move again before the drive stalled out and a tipped pass was intercepted by Butler.

Henne finished 10 of 16 for 121 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

After an Adam Vinatieri 31-yard field goal gave the Colts an early 3-0 lead, Luck led the Colts on an eight-play, 51-yard scoring drive that Luck finished off himself with a 5-yard touchdown run. Linebacker Moise Fokou forced a fumble from Jaguars’ receiver Laurent Robinson on the ensuing Jacksonville possession that was recovered by Butler.

Seven plays later, Luck scored again on a 1-yard run to give the Colts a 17-0 lead.

It still wasn’t the cleanest performance by the Colts either. Indianapolis turned the ball over two times as well and Luck had a second interception negated on a personal foul from Terrance Knighton.

The Colts head to New England to take on the Patriots next week while the Jaguars travel to take on the division-leading Houston Texans.

  1. I do not mean to be disrespectful, but Blaine Gabbert was a fool to think he was ready to leave Missouri a year early for the NFL. Chase Daniel was, is, and always will be 10 times the QB that Gabbert was, is, and will be.

  2. Great start for the season. I honestly think Luck will win more SBs over his career than Manning, but mainly bc they are surrounding him with a great head coach, GM, and already a much improved and aggressive defense. Who knows what will happen this year, but Luck’s arrow is pointing straight up and looks like a good bet that he will have a great career. Plus he seems like a good kid…

  3. As a Colts fan I think we can all agree, we’ve been incredibly spoiled. If one bad season was what it took to have 3 decades of elite quarterback play, then I’ll take it. I understand it was Jacksonville but Luck has the look of somebody who is already a top 10 quarterback.

  4. Best NFL Rookies Currently
    1 Luck (by a landslide)
    2 Doug Martin
    3 Luke Kuechly
    4 Matt Kalil
    5 Trent Richardson

  5. Easy to win win your schedule is in the top 3 of the easiest in the league and when you play in the worst division in the NFL.

I want to see how Mr.Luck survives in the NFC South.

  6. I think they need to rename EverBank Field “Old Indian Burial Ground”. Jaguars are jinxed. Between baffling brain cramps and baffling refereeing decisions, they seem to be playing with anchors tied to their necks at home.

  7. The Colts are 6-3 in a rebuilding year

    Cowboys are 3-5 with a window closing…

Great job Jerry, good thing you aren’t gonna quit any time soon.

  8. oh my garsh andrew luck single-handedly took down the berst team in the enfl! he is so best! he do it all by himself too! especially since reggie wayne is worstest receive in nfl! yersh andrew luck is so best and rg3 isn’t, even arg gee threehs defense is better than lucks! what a sham!

  9. Manning-less Colts continue to win!
Meanwhile the hometown debacle and woes continue in J ville. Is this the last season of pro football in Jacksonville?
Team has zero talent, and its fans have given up already! Sad to see the lack of support.

  10. Jacksonville might be the worst NFL team I’ve ever seen play. They are hopeless. I’m not hating on Luck cause he’s great, but the Colts sure do have a light schedule. I think they’re probably a bit overrated at this point. They did lose to the Jags and got rolled by the Jets.

  11. What ever happened to that “wonderful” Justin Blackmon. As a Vikes fan I was initially dismayed with our very unsexy pick of an OL when we needed receivers so bad, but after his DUI and all the nothing he’s accomplished this year I feel much better about that beast Matt Kalil.

  12. What this season really says about the colts is that they tanked last year like nobody’s business. We all knew they were going to “suck for luck” at the beginning of the season. I don’t look at this season as some great story of the lil engine that could….i see it as a team that threw games for their own benefit. They really should be fined not patted on the back.

    Luck is better than RG3-6.

    _____________________________

They’re both great QBs, and they’re both going to have points where one looks better and one looks worse. 2 weeks ago after RG3 led the go ahead drive at NYG, everyone had RG3 as the better QB so far. Now the Skins have played 2 terrible games and Luck is on top. It will fluctuate along their careers, but Luck isn’t better just because the Colts have a better record.

Don’t forget that Luck is leading the league in attempts averaging over 40/game, the Colts have one of the easiest schedules in the league, are playing an emotionally charged season; meanwhile RG3 is playing without his #1WR, #1TE, a terrible defense, and a bogus $18M cap penalty.

    Also,

    Passer rating RG3 leads 93 to 79.

    Comp % RG3 leads 65 to 56.

    TD/INT – RG3 8/3, Luck 10/9.

    Rushing RG3 529/6TDs, Luck 159/5 TDs

Better record does not equal better QB. Cutler better than Brady, Rodgers, Brees?

Yea and they blew 4 mil on that lame duck Kerry Collins just throw everyone off their scent too! Tool

The stats do not even begin to tell the story.

RGIII throws the highest percentage of passes within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage in the NFL. He is playing great in the system Shanahan has put him in, but the training wheels are still on.

Luck’s average depth of his pass attempts is highest in the entire league. Despite a rather porous line, he has taken relatively few sacks and has been keeping his eyes downfield and taking hits after getting the ball out just in time.

  16. easy there skins23. Dont get all stat guy on us. Luck is better. period. RG3 runs a pedestrian and simple style of offense where they run 1000 times per game. As for Luck, they gave him the keys and told him to go drive.

I agree that the training wheel are still on. I wish they would let them off a bit since RG3 actually has a very accurate deep ball and was known for this in college, but the injury to Garcon has really hindered their downfield game.

The ‘line of scrimmage’ stat keeps coming up, but RG3 is still ahead of Luck in yards/attempt on the season, meaning his passes on average have been just as effective.

I like Luck and wish him well but its foolish to say Luck is better based on record.

  18. skins fans are whining and making excuses, buyers remorse ? easy schedule? lol, and unlike skins, we win at home and on the road too, want some cheese with that whine skins23?

  19. You people don’t understand that RG3 and luck are in two different systems, two different styles of play, different teams. Do you really think luck would thrive in that redskins offense? Would RG3 have better success in the redskins offense? Both guys had great games and bad games, luck average an int per game but that doesn’t make him no less better than RG3. RG3 on the other hand takes too many sacks and literally has to run for his life but he’s also no less better than luck. Face it, these two are gonna be your next manning and Brady but its not gonna happen over night, their teams still have loose holes to fill

Wow, great comment. Brilliant, really. Yet so very typical of posters here.

I am hardly whining. I love RG3 and would not trade him for anyone in the league, including Luck. I like Luck as well. I think they’ll both be great QBs and both have chances to win Super Bowls.

Yes, when you play the Titans and Jags twice, Browns, Chiefs, Bills, Jets, your schedule is easy. The Skins actually have just as many road wins as the Colts do. I realize that the Skins are not good right now.

AGAIN, all I am saying is that just because the Colts have a better record does not necessarily make Luck a better QB. They’re both 9 games into their career.

Sorry that I actually made a post that consisted of stats and reasoning instead of just “Rg who” or “Luck>RG3 by far” which exemplify a lot of posts on this site. And that since you don’t like my argument, the stats are invalid, apparently.

I’d love to hear your reasoning as to why “Luck is better, period”. Again, I like Luck. I don’t see how he’s better, “period”. A couple weeks ago, there were Colts fans on this site saying Indy had made the wrong pick.

And “pedestrian and simple offense” is simply incorrect and ignorant. They’re running the zone read the majority of the offense (too often for my liking, in fact) in which RG3 is making any of several decisions POST-snap. Kyle Shanahan has installed a great hybrid option offense that up until 2 weeks ago has been working very well, but they have been struggling of late without Garcon and Davis. Their intermediate and between the hash routes have been killing defenses, but they have not run as many deep patters as they should be.

  22. You can talk about stats all day, they don’t mean anything to anyone except RGWho?

    Bottom line:

    Colts 6 – 3
    Skins 3 – 6

  23. Hey skins23….isnt there a rally going on downtown DC to save the redskins franchise n shanahans job?

  24. skins23 says:

“Better record does not equal better QB. Cutler better than Brady, Rodgers, Brees?”

Brady, Rodgers, and Brees are elite, SB-winning QBs any team would love to have on their roster…That said, I believe Jay Cutler is the right QB to lead the Bears to that level, he has the talent…Bad o-line play, no legit WRs before this year, and his own poor decision-making have held him back thus far.

You say record doesn’t matter, but Jay is 26-9 in his last 35 starts, and was 7-3 last year before breaking his thumb…We all saw what happened to that winning record once Caleb Hanie got hold of it…/-:

Anyway…Back to the topic at hand…I also think both Luck and RG3 will be great (likely elite) QBs in the NFL.

  25. Skins23, You’re not fooling anyone. You must be Skip Bayless because only Skip Bayless would be moronic enough to take RG3-6 over Luck.

  26. @skins23

A bit of advise, you will never win this running arguement. As a Colts fan I am 100% convinced we got the right guy. That is not saying you got the wrong guy. See how easy that was? Everyone wins.
