Getty ImagesThe greatest player in the history of the New York Jets is once again ripping the current makeup of the Jets.
This time, Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath told The Jets Blog Podcast that under owner Woody Johnson, the team’s primary concern has become selling personal seat licenses, rather than winning, and as a result Johnson just wants the Jets to make offseason moves that will generate publicity — like trading for Tim Tebow — as opposed to moves that will build the foundation of a strong team.
“I think the focus is changed, subtly,” Namath said, via ESPN.com. “It’s more toward grabbing headlines, and everything starts at the top. And you can go back to when the seat licenses were initiated, how we started conducting things. I don’t think winning has been put at the top of the board. Winning headlines has replaced that.”
Of course, the best way to sell tickets would be to win a Super Bowl. So Johnson surely wants to see his team win (even if it would only be a consolation prize for him after his top priority of getting Mitt Romney elected didn’t work out). But Namath believes that the Jets have picked players who get short-term attention, rather than players who will be part of a long-term goal of winning the Super Bowl.
“We seem to have regressed with talent, the last two years at least, the last three years,” he said. “I don’t know who’s picking the player . . . I’m disappointed in the talent we have, and I think you have to start looking at who’s doing the picking and why.”
Namath isn’t the only one who is looking at the person who’s doing the picking, Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum, and asking why he hasn’t built a better team. A big question for the future of the franchise is whether Johnson will find someone new to pick the players next year.
