Wade Phillips: Brandon Marshall is the only receiver Bears throw to

AP

Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips says the scouting report on the Bears’ passing game heading into Sunday night’s game is simple: They throw the ball to wide receiver Brandon Marshall. A lot.

Phillips said the Bears have “only thrown it to one guy basically,” and that the Texans have to make stopping that one guy the focal point of their coverage.

“Marshall’s a great receiver,” Phillips said, via ESPNChicago.com, “but they haven’t thrown it to the other guys very much except the running back. They do a great job of that. He’s a tremendous receiver.”

Phillips is basically correct: Marshall has 59 catches for 797 yards and seven touchdowns this season. No one else on the Bears has more than 20 catches, 200 yards or two touchdowns.

Phillips also offered a wry observation about how the Texans can stop him: “We double cover him every play,” Phillips said. “That’s our plan. We’re going to double cover him every play.”

That’s probably the best way to stop the Bears.

  1. Either he’s trying to psych the Bears into throwing more to their lesser receivers, or he’s as dumb as he sometimes looked when he coached the Jerrys.

  2. What exactly have the Texans ever won? They haven’t even ever won any game that mattered let alone done anything memorable. At least the Jaguars have been to the AFC championship.

  3. There could be 4 guys covering Marshall and I’m pretty sure Cutler would still try to chuck up some bombs to him

  4. Have other teams not tried double covering him? Seems pretty obvious Marshall’s been the only guy catching any balls for them all year.

  5. That’s the way to do it Wade. Coverage underneath and a safety over the top. Just like the Pack did this year to Marshall- 2 catches for 24 yards and a beat down of the bears.

  6. The Texans sure do yap a lot for a team that has won 1 playoff game in 11 years. Wade Phillips, who we all know is a joke of a head coach, just lit the fire under the rest of the Bears offense. Bears are going to hit them in the mouth early and often.

  7. It’s a shame that Ashlon Jeffery isnt playing because he was coming along nice and Bears can certainly use him.
He seems like a natural WR unlike Hester but The Bears will have Bennett and maybe the TE’s might play a role. Let Texans focus on BM then Forte and Bush will kill them, they are weak up the middle since Cushing been gone!!!!!

  8. I can not wait until sunday night. If peanut plays, put him on Johnson and Jennings on Walter for the first drive and feel out how well the Bears front seven handle that massive running attack. I am a huge Bears fan, but I am not sure if the offensive line is up for the task.

  9. 1 things for sure the next 2 games (hou and sf )will reveal if the bears are a legitimate super bowl threat or if they are just good at beating up teams without winning records having lost to the only team with a winning record they faced.

  10. Don’t forget Earl Bennett there Wade. He hasn’t been as productive because he’s been banged up. But he has as reliable hands as anybody and he’s Cutler’s go to guy on 3rd down.

  11. Tice has adjusted to the “bracket” coverage since the Packers game. He’s countered it by putting Marshall underneath, in the slot, and down the middle of the field. It’s worked out quite nicely since the debacle in Lambeau.

  12. As a Texans fan who has been burned by Cutler in fantasy football, I CAN’T WAIT until Wade Phillips brings the pressure and JJ WATT CRUSHES Cutler…

I predict Cutler will be crying, whining, and throwing the ball into the ground and yelling at his O-line.

    Texans 17
    Bears 13

    ==================================
Remember that time back in the 1999 season when the Jaguars lost the AFC Championship game?

    That was awesome.

  14. So the Texans are going to put double coverage on Marshall?
    Wow.
I bet no other team has thought of that even though he is one of the best WRs in the league.

    Wade Phillips… innovator!

  15. ***correction indy wasn’t a winning team at that time, right??? we will see what the bears are made of. good luck bears but you still lose in the playoffs when cutler quits.

  16. The bears have beaten one winning team this season – the 5-3 Indianapolis Colts in game one of Andrew Lucks NFL career. That’s it.

They’ve played one good defense – the Green Bay Packers and Cutler got his ass handed to him.

I think Houston gets to Cutler and the bears defense which gives up a very unremarkable 4.3 yds per carry gets lit up by the Houston run game and Shaub play actions for a couple f deep throws.

  17. Wade you are NOT in Texas this week.. and you are NOT playing a week AFC team. This is Chicago and nothing you say will change the way they play. MARSHALL gets double covered every week so thats not new

  18. I heard this morning that the texans players and coaches were calling this the most important game in the franchises history….. I guess that tells you everything you need to know when one team thinks its their Super Bowl and can hardly contain themselves on press day and just start spewing the gameplan to an open mic.. The other team is all like steady as she goes, lets take this business trip and take care of things.

By the way Wade, everyone has been doubling Marshall and he’s still getting all the love from Cutler he wants!! Well, I guess not everyone had him doubled. The cowboys remembered that zero coverage package you installed and left Marshall 45% of the middle of the field to jog down the seam for six!!!! See ya Monday Wade!!

  19. I love coaches that give out information pertaining to their strategy for an upcoming game to the media. Wade Phillips is a goofy guy and loves to show it. This is textbook Rex Ryan!

  20. Laugh all you want about Wade Phillips, but he knows defense.

I expect they’ll force Marshall underneath and whack him every chance they get with their LB’s.

  21. As a Bear fan Philips is absolutely right. If Cutler can’t get the ball to other receivers the offense will struggle. JJ Watts is a beast going against an offensive line that may show up or may not. I’ll be watching but possibly covering my eyes on some plays.

  22. Thanks Wade.. cause Lovie has put every thing you said on the board and the Bears have been looking at it all week. HESTER.. Forte.. and Bennet is gotta be pissed and Jeffrey can still play in this game

  23. The Bears, much like the Texans have benefited so far from a fairly weak schedule. Both have lost to the same team, both have only beaten 2 winning teams, and both have great defenses. Neither team has seen a defense like they are about to see though. I’ll tip my cap to the Bears D as the better of the two but Bear’s fans need to realize that the Texan’s O is the better of the two. The Bears D relies on takeaways more than any other defense in the league and they are going against an offense that is very good at taking care of the football.

As much as Bears fans worry about Tillman not playing, the Texans worry about Owen Daniels not playing. Daniels is a speedster TE that isn’t coverable by a LB. He presents mismatches every week for Matt Schaub and he is the #1 target on the team. he currently has a hip issue but as he’s a Naperville native I can’t see him missing this one.

The weather is going to be a factor, forecast is cold and wet which surely favors the Bears. Should be a very good, close game and I expect it will be decided late in the 4th by a kicker.

  24. Bears fan here.

Did Wade just give you his defensive game plan in a nutshell? Or is this smoke and mirrors?

I think the Bears are going to lose this game unless they step up the involvement of their backfield. Houston will score on Chicago, they have to be able to reduce Houston’s possessions and answer on Offense when they do score. This is a great D, great Special Teams, but the offense is a straight liability they way they are playing right now. This team reminds me of the 06 Bears except this one has a boat load more potential on offense. Their O is going to have to execute at some point.

  25. Wade been over there playing them weak teams in the AFC now he thinks Chicago will fall for that weak game plan. Sunday night in Chicago the Bears will beat them worse than greenbay did
