On Sunday, Steelers safety Ryan Clark applied a textbook hit to Giants receiver Victor Cruz in the end zone. There was no contact with Cruz’s head or neck, and Clark didn’t hit Cruz anywhere with Clark’s helmet.
But Clark inexplicably was flagged — possibly under the goofy notion (as our sometime goofy pal Ross Tucker has recently pointed out) that the officials err on the side of protecting players.
Proving that Clark didn’t break the rules is the fact that, per the league office, Clark wasn’t fined.
It was the right decision, highlighting the fact that the officials made the wrong decision.
