Panthers hire Accorsi as consultant for GM search

ernie-accorsi-tom-coughlin AP

After firing their former sports reporter general manager, the Panthers hired another one to help look for his replacement.

The Panthers announced that former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi (who worked at the old Charlotte News among other newspaper stops) would consult owner Jerry Richardson in looking for a replacement for Marty Hurney.

Accorsi will begin immediately, and will help prepare a list for Richardson so a new GM can be hired after the season.

The two have a long relationship, as the Giants and the Steelers are the two franchises Richardson has tried to model his after since he joined the NFL.

    It’s a start, I guess..

    Accorsi was the one who pilfered Eli Manning from the Chargers for the 3 draft picks right? He’s also drafted well too from what I can remember.

    Anywho, if he can help find the man to help us in the personnel department, then welcome aboard!

    Foghorn Leghorn makes a solid hire with Acorsi.

    Didn’t he play some wiseguy on the Sopranos, too ?

    Warning Wil Robinson, warning!!!

    The Browns (former) owner used Accorsi as a consultant to hire the immortal Eric Mangini!

    Accorsi built the foundation the current Giants have. The have a phenomenal scouting department be he still oversaw the show that.

    he knew enough to not let Umenyiora go to SD for Eli. He also hired Couphlin.

    Anyone who thinks this is a bad move… Read Accorsi’s book, specifically, how he knew Eli was the guy.

    This man is not only a football genius for on the field talent, he is one of the few people on planet earth that could take on any part of a football organization and make it great.

    As a Giants fan, you better be happy about this move Panthers fans. He recommended Reese as his successor… which worked out pretty well. He helped put together a Super Bowl caliber team that Reese cemented with an outstanding 2007 Draft.

    Accorsi knows what he’s doing. Your last GM was the pits.

    I assure you that is a reflection on the Browns, not on Accorsi. Is he perfect?, no.

    Ever wonder how the Falcons turned a 180 so quickly back to respectability, and playoff appearances, after the Vick/Mora debacle?

    Yup. Him.

    Yeah, listen to this guy ^

    They fired a sportswriter turned GM and are now getting the advice from someone who’s done the same thing.

    Nope. I’m still wondering why Accorsi recommended Mangini to the Browns.

    Yup. Him.

    Why don’t they just, uh, hire Ernie Accorsi?

    Hopefully his next stop us in Dallas! Nevermind that’s Jerry’s job! SMH

    You can bet on it that Accorsi will recommend to Panthers owner Jerry Richardson to hire Giants current Director of College Scouting Marc Ross as General Manager.

    Maybe he was pissed at Al for telling art to move the original Browns out of Cleveland

  18. bigbluebruiser says: Nov 9, 2012 4:06 PM

    @ezmoover

    It was Accorsi who recommended Thomas Dimitroff to Falcons owner Arthur Blank when he hired him as a consultant in 2008.

    Just don’t let him draft linebackers.

    This is a HUGE step in the right direction for the Panthers. Ernie Acorsi is the guy who laid the foundation for the current success of the NY Giants. Acorsi is one of the best football minds around & is a great talent evaluator. Acorsi also hand-picked Jerry Reese as his successor with the Giants, so he has a good track record with picking general managers. The only thing that would be better for the Panthers would be for Acorsi to recommend himself the Richardson to become the Panthers’ next GM. If you are trying to model your franchise after the Giants, there isn’t a better person to head the process of selecting the next GM of the Panthers than the man who started the Giants’ soon-to-be-recognized dynasty.

    ezmoover:

    Eric Mangini is an extremely underrated coach. Aside from the Vernon Gholston debacle, Mangini was a great talent evaluator. You know those Jets fans who can’t seem to let go of the fact that they made back-to-back AFC Championship Game APPEARANCES? The same fans that brag about those APPEARANCES despite the fact that they don’t even have merely a division title to show for them? Well, those teams made it as far as they did with Mangini’s players, not Rex Ryan’s players. In the 2 years since then, Rex Ryan & Mike Tannenbaum completely butchered a roster that was rife with talent & depth, and replaced it with a top-heavy, depthless team that can’t get out of its own way. The only reason Mangini didn’t succeed as a head coach was because of the jokes of franchises he was employed by. The only franchise that challenges the Jets as the most incompetent franchise in the NFL is the Cleveland Browns. Had Mangini been given more time with the Jets, maybe 2 more years, the Jets probably would’ve done more than only appearing in AFC Championship Games, they probably would’ve won one or two, and very well might have another Vince Lombardi Trophy to add to their tarnished, lonely, single trophy sitting in the case in Florham Park. Just listen to Mangini on ESPN; he is probably the only analyst on that channel that knows what he is he talking about.

    Don’t forget about the Chiefs (with a former Patriot exec as GM, oooooooohhhhhh!), Bills, Cowboys, Redskins, and Jaguars.

    @kappy32,
    As a Pats fan, I’m not the biggest EM fan but I think he’s the only one of Bill’s guys who is actual HC material. Cleveland shouldn’t have fired him IMO.
