Roger Staubach likes Romo, thinks Jerry should delegate more

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo takes a lot of criticism, but not from his Hall of Fame predecessors.

Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman has gone so far as to say Romo “is a better quarterback than I was,” and today former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach said he’s high on Romo, too.

In an appearance on Mike and Mike in the Morning, Staubach noted problems on the Cowboys’ offensive line and said that Romo “is having to scramble for his life at times.” And Staubach said that Cowboys fans should embrace the fact that Romo is the man to lead their team.

“He’s a heck of a quarterback,” Staubach said of Romo. “This year and next year, for sure, he’ll be the guy. . . . I think he can do it. I think Tony Romo isn’t the problem.”

So what is the problem? Staubach was careful not to directly criticize Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, but he did suggest that perhaps Jones should let the football people make more of the football decisions.

“Jerry is trying real hard,” Staubach said. “He’s got to find a medium ground there and delegate more authority.”

Staubach said he’s optimistic that the 3-5 Cowboys can turn things around and make the playoffs, but he acknowledged that if they don’t, Jones is going to hear even more criticism for his personnel moves than he has already.

“It’s been a disappointing season so far, but it’s not over,” Staubach said. “I don’t think Dallas is out of it, but if they’re out of it this year he’ll continue to get more criticism as far as how he’s handling the team. But it’s his team, he owns the team and he’s passionate about it, and I can’t tell him what to do so I’m just a big Cowboy fan and hoping for the best.”

After the results over the first half of the season, most big Cowboy fans are hoping for a new general manager.
