Bengals rout sloppy Giants 31-13

Reuters

It looked like the Giants were going to grab a little momentum on their second possession of the second half when Ahmad Bradshaw ripped off a long run deep into Bengals territory, but the play would not end well for the Giants.

Adam Jones yanked the ball out of Bradshaw’s hands, Carlos Dunlap recovered and the Giants had the first of three straight turnovers that handed the game to the Bengals on a silver platter. Eli Manning would throw interceptions under pressure on each of the next two Giants drives, the Bengals cashed both in with Andy Dalton touchdown passes and the 31-13 rout was officially on.

Manning would add a third turnover in the fourth quarter when he was stripped of the ball on a Wallace Gilberry sack. He had time to do something else with the ball on that play, just as he did while throwing interceptions on balls that should have been thrown away. Those turnovers were the most glaring errors of the day for a Giants offense that turned in yet another poor performance after a week of questions about what was wrong with the team. It was more of the same this week as the running game did nothing when the score was close, receivers dropped passes and the offensive line didn’t protect Manning well. Throw in Manning’s poor decisions and it is not hard to understand the final score.

The Bengals defense shouldn’t be deprived of credit, though. Geno Atkins dominated the line of scrimmage, helping his teammates pick up four sacks of Manning and, as mentioned, setting up three of the four turnovers that made life easier for the Bengals. Dalton finished with four touchdowns, which pretty much accounted for every throw he had to make on a day when the defense (and special teams, thanks to a 64-yard punt return by Jones) made life very easy for the offense. The early touchdown throw to A.J. Green was important, though, as it forced the Giants offense to play from behind on a day when they needed no extra pressure.

Cincinnati has the Chiefs, Raiders and Chargers on the schedule in the next three weeks, so they could use this win as a springboard back into the playoff picture after their 3-5 start. The Giants have a bye week that they’ll use to try to stop the New York papers from being filled with stories about another second half nose dive for the defending Super Bowl champions.

  1. Giants got completely destroyed today in every facet of the game (although the defense was fine before the barrage of turnovers had them pinned to start drives).

Bye week couldn’t have come any sooner, although Giants fans KNOW Killdrive ain’t changing a thing.

However, the first two comments here are hilarious.

  2. lol where are the loudmouth Giant fans who were bashing me for saying the Giants are lucky?? Giants have gotten rolled for 4 straight weeks and only beat the Redskins and Cowboys thanks to 10 turnovers, bad calls in the Skins game, and Dez Bryant’s pinky.

Today they actually lost the turnover battle by 2 turnovers and they lost 31-13. Wonder what the game would have looked like if the Giants had turned it over 6 times like Dallas did vs. NY. Bet it wouldn’t have come down to a pinky in the end zone!!

anybody still wanna talk about how Eli is as good as Peyton?

  3. Giants fina open up the door for the Eagles and Cowboys.. tole y’all last year they way overrated..except they D-line

  4. Here’s a Giants fan that will not run when things go sour. Hey, we got beat by a team that played way better than us, period. Say what you will but this team is way better than what they showed today.

They lost it happens, however they are still the defending Superbowl champions. And I have personally have seen my team win 4 Superbowls……..so i can die in peace with a smile on my face.

BTW, if the Giants are so lucky and the teams they beat in the Superbowl are so much better than they are then why does the game have to come down to one or two lucky plays? My point is how come the Giants didn’t lose by 40 points it the other teams are that much better?………That’s what I thought!!!

  5. The Giants manage to win when it really counts, but they can really look awful at times. They would give me ulcers if I watched them all the time.

  6. The problem with the Giants is that the team, during the Eli Manning era, has lived and died with the defense, first and the running game, second. Eli did not have to carry the team with his arm during either Superbowl run and, until recently, the team has not relied on him trying to put up huge numbers though the air (which is good, given his tendency, last year notwithstanding, to toss picks frequently). After a career year, he is reverting to form and his receivers seem to be coming back down to earth, as well. Giants fans should be counting their lucky stars that they are in what looks to be a very weak division.

  7. Eagles fan here and sorry but I have to use a little logic. How were the Giants over rated last year, when..they won the superbowl by playing smash mouth football (good football) when it counted?

I’m just curious going by some of the comments.

  8. Gotta love fans of other teams who wait for the defending champs to stumble before they come out of the woodwork to gloat.

Congrats to the Bengals. They definitely came to play and deserved the win.

You dedicate your username to the Giants being lucky. You glue yourself to the TV scrutinizing every Giants game to find their luck. Then you scour this site for any post mentioning the word “Giants” and comment about their luck. It might be wise to spend all that time and energy elsewhere.

  10. Makes me so happy that trolls are happier when we lose then when their miserable teams win. It’s great rooting for a perennial conntender

  11. I understand that the giants were maybe in cruise control considering that horses*** division, and i understand they slipped up, but to get run off the field like that??

gcsuk, justintuckrule, bigblue , etc. been MIA the last 2 weeks…. where yall been???? that Giants dynasty is rollin!!!

Haven’t been MIA, I’ve been here. Don’t blame me if the PFT censors don’t put every post through.

Giants are going NOWHERE until they have the brains and the guts to bench David Diehl. Every pressure today came from his side. He was a very serviceable player for years, but not anymore.

OK, giantlucksacks, back under your rock.

  13. Everybody just calm the F@@k down, The Giants are still in first, they are the defending champs, and they play better in Dec and Jan so no need to panic, thanks.

  14. I’m not really stunned. NYG under TC have usually been a really streaky team. They just usually get on the good streaks when they need to. Honestly, their best team under him was probably the 08 squad…but they just seem to perform better when they are backed into a corner, not favorites like that year.

Haha, perennial contender?? The Giants have won playoff games in TWO different years since 2000. Only in their 2 fluke super bowl years. The only thing perennial is how overrated the Giants are every year and how every season the Giants usually stink up the joint for a month or more and people are calling for Coughlins job.

A perennial contender that choked in 2008/was a joke in 2009/laughable in 2010
    ELI- te!

  17. Hey, giantlucksacks, what team do you root for? From the obvious jealousy I’m sensing from you, I’m guessing an Eagles fan? If so, nice 5 game losing streak. Enjoy the rest of the season.

  18. No worries at all. We’ll be there like usual come week 17. Get blown out by cincy, blow out sf… It’s all circular. It’s like a Ferris wheel. It goes up and down and around. Sure beats rooting for a team like Philly that never, ever wins and is about to replace the skins as the perennial doormat, or the skins who are rebuilding, or Dallas who can never win more than 8. We’ll start playing well As soon as the band wagon lightens up a little more.

  19. Just happy we FINALLY beat a legitimate playoff team lol!! Giants will be fine. The rest of that division blows!! Bengals need to be more consistent. They had been terrible on 3rd down this year but did a good job on 3rd down today. I think 2 of Dalton’s TD throws were on 3rd down. I thought for sure Dalton would be on his back a few times today!! They didn’t give up any sacks though and were able to get to Eli 4 times.

  20. Giant fan forever here…Wouldn’t it have been nice to go into the bye weekend on a solid win for a change?!?!?

I love these guys to death, but I can’t watch a game anymore without a bottle of Pepto by my side……

  21. I actually did call this one in my picks blog. One of the few I got right today, so I’ll own it. Is it too soon to say Andy Dalton played like Sandy Dalton?

  22. Very happy my Bengals won. They looked great in all phases of the game. They have 3 winnable games coming up, but for some reason, they will probably only win one of them. If they play the rest of the year like they did yesterday, they will make the playoffs. If not, they finish 6-10 at best.

That being said, who are these people knocking the Giants?? They are still in first and still the defending champs. Overlook them at your own peril.
