Saints hand Falcons their first loss, ’72 Dolphins can celebrate

If the members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins really do celebrate each year when the last undefeated team loses, they can pop the champagne now.

The Falcons are undefeated no more after falling to the Saints 31-27 in New Orleans today, a game when Atlanta got off to a great start but New Orleans held tough to make a strong statement that they’re still NFC playoff contenders.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw an interception on his first pass of the game, but after that he was excellent, finishing 21-for-32 for 298 yards and three touchdowns, with no more interceptions after that first one. The Saints also got a big game from running back Chris Ivory, whose 56-yard touchdown was one of the best runs in the NFL all season.

Matt Ryan was great for the Falcons, completing 34 of 52 passes for 411 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception, but Atlanta got a dreadful game from running back Michael Turner, who had 15 yards on 13 carries. The Falcons’ offense also suffered an early blow when Julio Jones left the game with an ankle injury, but Jones ended up toughing it out and returning to the field to finish the game.

The Falcons may still be title contenders, but after winning several close games over the first half of the season, they’ve now finally lost one. And the Saints, who had such a disastrous start to the season, are back in the hunt.

  1. Congrats Saints fans.

Now you can remove that Piggly Wiggly sack off your heads for a day and enjoy a cold beer.

  2. Those last two stands were extremely impressive coming from that defense. I don’t care how many yards they give up, even in the SB year they gave up a ton of yards. They just need to hold when it matters.

  3. Time for Falcons to stop complaining about not getting respect.

In other words, YOU’RE OVERRATED WHEN A 2-win team beats you!!!

  4. Please I beg you stop bring up the Dolphins. Different era, less games, the Patriots did better. Enough already.

By the way, as a Fan I never had delusions of going undefeated nor did I want them to. (See New England)

  5. Sean Payton can beat Mike Smith even when he’s suspended. Now maybe Roddy White can shut his pie hole. Too bad Tony Gonzales has to play on such a classless team.

  6. Congrats “NO”. The Saints, aren’t good enough to be playoff contenders. The Falcons are good but have been overachieving. The only thing The Saints are accomplishing is lowering their draft position for next year. I love it.

  7. You have to hand it to the Saints, the Falcons didn’t deserve to win this game today. Even against their suspect defense, Michael Turner is simply garbage. NO got big plays when they needed them and the Falcons need to figure out how to win with a washed up running back. As an ATL fan, it hurts to say, but congrats to the Saints today.

I know that’s how things roll in Atlanta with your fans, but never at any time this season were saints fans bailing on their team.

  9. I’m a Saints fan, and these two teams play each other hard no matter what there records are (cliche, but true). The oddest thing is that, as much as the teams hate each other, I’ve ALWAYS, without question, had fun interacting with Falcons fans, both here and in Atlanta.

  10. There are very few things in football that I’m utterly sick and tired of. One of them is the ’72 Dolphins.

  11. Shouldn’t the Falcons have run the ball every time when it was 1st and goal from the 1 with 2 minutes to go in the game? Dumb play calling probably cost them the game.

  12. Maybe white will learn to shut is trap one of these days. Falcons are really not that good. Won a few lucky ones for sure. Bears will destroy them if Atlanta is lucky enough to sneak into the playoffs.

  13. Hate to pile on but tg these pretenders were beaten. Never played anyone. Matt Ryan cant win under any pressure.

  14. The Falcons played pretty well, but the defense isn’t what got ’em beat. It was the offense. The Falcons had an early pick, took a 15-yd celebration penalty, and ended up kicking a FG instead of having it first down at the Saints 12. Then, the Falcons had the ball late and kicked a FG after 1st and goal at the Saints 5. The killer at the end was not punching it in after 2nd and goal at the Saints 1.

If the Falcons can’t run the ball up the middle, then they have to get Quizz out on the edge. I was shocked not to see him get a ball out of the backfield on any of those goal-to-go situations. Koetter has to use him more.

  15. Nobody down here is celebrating the Falcons loss. It means nothing to us that there’s no undefeated team.

It will be fun watching the 49ers dismantle the Saints November 25.

    After that?

    TO Atlanta.

Then AT New York to take on the Giants…

    Good luck with that…

Even more sad – I wait every Sunday in hopes that someone beats the Saints (doesn’t matter who). Hey we are still flawed but…

  17. No……..The Saints “D’ cost them the game.
Now I can spit the feathers out of my mouth. My wife did not remove them before cooking the gumbo. Still tasted sweet.

  18. Wow, that’s a lot of trash talking from a 4-5 team. It was a good game and none of us were under the false impression that the Falcons would be 16-0. The Falcons are a solid team, not a perfect team. It’s obvious the running game and run D are problems, but still…. Would you rather be the Saints or the Falcons at this point?

Love all these guys calling the Falcons overrated and pretenders. What team do you root for that’s undefeated at this point? What’s this awesome team waiting in the wings that’s gonna blow everyone away? The Giants? The 49’ers?

There’s a few very good teams out there, and the Falcons are one of them, but there’s no world-beating team that is head and shoulders above the rest, so get over yourselves.

Honestly at this point even though the saints may be out of the race I can’t have any confidence that the falcons will do anything more than another early postseason exit.

  20. @grendelg Saints fans are talking trash in response to Roddy White’s “I hate NOLA” garbage. And guess what…I’d still rather be a Saints fan any day. At least we’ve won a playoff game.

dismantle? you mean like they did the rams? their own division is exposing them as frauds as big as the fraudcons.

    good luck with THAT!

  22. Why is it that everyone is saying the Falcons didn’t play anyone because they had losing records but now that the saints beat them (with a losing record) the saints have shown that they are a playoff contender?

One of the other posts had it right…all the NFC South games are tough because they all know each other so well.

Every week people try to counter unwanted Saints chatter by reminding us of our record. I remember the 0-4 chatter…then the 2-5 chatter… now the 4-5 chatter. When you say a 4-5 team after starting 0-4, im thinking 4-1 since that horrible start soooo…please keep reminding me why my glass is half full not half empty.

  24. GRENDLG. I would rather be the saints even at 4-5. Y u ask. Because we have Brees. And Sean Payton. And class. And everything else it takes to be a Saint. And the falcons have no Super Bowl wins. An overrated team. A loss to the Saints this week.

  25. I know this isn’t supposed to be anything more than a recap, but the writing in this story is awful. Repetitive and simplistic. Reads like a 6th grader wrote it.
