Vikings finish off the Lions

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Ponder scrambles around Detroit Lions linebacker Durant during the second half of their NFL football game in Minneapolis Reuters

We can pretty much forget about Detroit making a return to the playoffs, as the Vikings outplayed the Lions for four quarters on Sunday and put together an impressive 34-24 win.

The Lions got off to one of their usual slow starts, and this time they weren’t able to turn things up in the fourth quarter. Calvin Johnson stepped up, with 12 catches for 207 yards and a touchdown, but the rest of the team didn’t show up. The Lions are now 4-5 and in last place in the NFC North, and considering that they have the toughest schedule in the league over the final seven games of the season, it’s just about impossible to imagine the Lions even getting to 8-8 this season.

The Vikings, however, are 6-4 and still very much in the playoff picture. Minnesota’s schedule gets tougher, too, but the Vikings at least have a chance to prove they belong in the hunt. With two games to go against the Bears and two games to go against the Packers, the Vikings are in control of their playoff destiny.

Adrian Peterson was outstanding for the Vikings, showing that he’s as good as ever — maybe better than ever — while playing on a surgically reconstructed knee. Peterson became the first player in the NFL to top 1,000 rushing yards this season, and his 61-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter pretty much put the game away.

The Vikings also got a big game from Christian Ponder, who had two touchdown tosses and no turnovers, and from receiver Jarius Wright, who stepped up with a big game in place of the injured Percy Harvin. The Vikings have a wealth of talent, and are clearly a team moving in the right direction. Now the question is whether that movement can get them to the playoffs — where the Lions were last season, but won’t be this season.

This game made me sick to my stomach. Especially the way defenses are allowed to take liberties with CJ.

The Vikings are dirty as hell.

  2. 7ransponder says: Nov 11, 2012 4:08 PM

Let’s hope the past 3 or 4 weeks were just a slump for Ponder and that this becomes the norm. There’s no reason why they don’t keep Wright active from here on out, replace Jenkins with him, Jenkins is terrible.

And AP? Well, what more is there to say, the guy is the TRUE beast.

AP the best runningback in the league!

  4. bovice23 says: Nov 11, 2012 4:13 PM

Are we 100% sure that Adrian Peterson was born on this planet and is in fact a human being?

  5. thekiy says: Nov 11, 2012 4:14 PM

I can’t understand the Lions playcalling. Late, they go deep and rack up yards and points, but they refuse to do it in the first half.

    It’s maddening…

Hope you enjoyed that one fluke year, Lions fans. Remember that one year the Browns went 10-6 with Derek Anderson? Well you had yours last year. Back to the bottom of the league for you.

Call me crazy but I think AD is BETTER than he was before injury,,,what a freak of nature!!

    @juanhugejazz

There was one penalty called for helmet to helmet and it was after Calvin Johnson came down upon Jasper Brinkley’s helmet. It was incidental and isolated. The rest of the game the Vikings played disciplined, physical defense. You’re just butthurt. And in last place.

  12. hyzers says: Nov 11, 2012 4:21 PM

Madden curse strikes again! Megatron held to 200 yards and a TD. Meanwhile a Vikings LB gets another personal foul for taking a shot to the head of CJ. Lions won’t get anywhere with practice squad DBs playing. This season is pretty much over and now they can play spoiler to other teams. Suh had a sack and forced a few bad throws which was nice to see.

  13. detroitsfinest981 says: Nov 11, 2012 4:21 PM

Lifelong Lions fan here. Vikings just beat us plain and simple. Adrian Peterson is a monster and had a field day against our terrible defense. I’ve been defending our defense for weeks but i can’t do it anymore. Wide 9 defense has got to go. Mayhew has got to address the secondary this draft. No more luxury picks we have to address this. I feel bad for Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson for playing their hearts out just for disappointment. We are a much better team then our record suggests and anyone saying other wise is ignorant.

    Lion Pride

  14. bmosh99 says: Nov 11, 2012 4:23 PM

I don’t understand what PFT talk has against the lions. They’re always lion bashing. “other than CJ nobody else showed up” How about Matt Stafford throwing for over 300. How about the Vikings DB’s clearly aiming for Calvin Johnson’s head on several occasions. Of course if it was the lions they’d be talking about how dirty they are but PFT always looks the other way when someone is dirty against the lions and doesn’t even mention it.

Unfortunately, it’s time to fire Coach Cunningham. This bend-but-don’t-break crap is a loser.

  16. taintedsaints2009 says: Nov 11, 2012 4:33 PM

In a time when running backs numbers are low, and their stats are struggling, I ask that all the top running backs give up some of their yardage to help those running backs more in need of improved stats. Somebody like Adrian Peterson doesn’t need all those yards, heck, he doesn’t even want all those yards. He wants to give those yards to those less fortunate. It’s just not fair for one running back to have so much while so many running backs have so few.

Yesterday everything you read was the Vikings were done. Ponder was setting back a talented team a decade. Today they’re right there in the hunt.

And the only thing that happened between those two was the Vikings played like they already had at times this year.

Its tough to read about the NFL these days.

Huge defensive let down from last week for Detroit. AP had his way running the ball today. Lions aren’t officially out of the playoff hunt. They need to almost win out now. The door is closing fast.

  21. purpwalk says: Nov 11, 2012 5:05 PM

ponder needed today, good bounce back game for him. enough can’t be said for AP’s year so far, might be running into the HOF after this season if he continues like this

  22. vikefan says: Nov 11, 2012 5:09 PM

with all do respect stafford, CJ, young had very good games. im not sure i agree with the kicking off philosophy of pooch kickoffs and letting us start the drives on 30 or 40 yd line but will take it. CJ is just like AD, flat out deserves more wins on a better team

  23. jessethegreat says: Nov 11, 2012 5:12 PM

Oh, so that’s what happens when you continue to feed AD the ball? Hopefully for Vikings fans everywhere, Mustgrave learns something from this demonstration of All Day’s abilities? This is coming from a diehard lifelong Packers fan that flat out respects All Day’s abilities and way he plays the game.

  31. samanthasteeleruinedmyqb says: Nov 11, 2012 6:29 PM

What do you think of Ponder now? And what do you think of the Vikings’ run defense now?

It’s a rebuilding team with a young QB, so they’re going to be up and down. People saying they would never win another game just assume that if you don’t play well you’ll keep playing like that but if you do play well you’re doing it with smoke and mirrors.

  43. pappavike says: Nov 12, 2012 2:02 AM

Man, Are there any adults on here? The Lions have a pretty solid team but have been hit by the injury bug! The Vikes have played well when no one expected them to! Ponder will have his ups and downs. Remember this is only Ponders second year!! And as far as the rest of the season? It’s not always about where you play’em But when you play’em!

  44. jimmylions says: Nov 12, 2012 5:16 AM

If the only player who showed up was Calvin, then he wouldn’t have had 12 catches for over 200 yards because that would mean the guy throwing him all those passes hadn’t shown up.

Stafford threw for over 300 yards and is on his way to another 5000 yard season. PFT tends to forget that fact because the PFT hates the Lions. I’m surprised none of the writers are blaming Suh for Jay Cutler’s and Alex Smith’s concussions!

When I was listening to the game today, it sounded like the defense was hurting without Cliff Avril (concussion today … a detail omitted above).

Even without Avril, the defense could have and should have played better. There’s no excuses about Special Teams this week. I expected AP to get over 100, but the defense let Ponder slap them around. That’s just depressing.

    ————————————

Not at all. I wasn’t talking about Houston. Green Bay came to play and took it to a good team, much as the Vikings did to the 49ers. No, what I was talking about the Packer fans pounding their chests as the cupcake wins piled up, proclaiming them the best again and assuring a SB win. Then, having the audacity to come on to a Vikings thread with “it was just the Lions” crap. But i suppose you ignore all the Packer trolls. They were probably in the stands for your wedding…..

And Queens, huh? Yeah, that’s original. Never heard a Pecker fan say that before. Does everyone in Green Gay read from the same script? Is there an owner’s newsletter with a trash talk section written by Bubba Cheesehead? Or is it just an overall lack of originality inherent in trolls?

    ————————————–

The Vikings are 5-1 when they don’t allow an opposing 100 yard rusher, and 2-0 when an opposing QB throws for 300+. Considering that no one other than Benson has gained more than 65 yards in any game for the Packers, and they only have a prayer of winning if Rodgers throws 50 times, I’d say I like the Vikings chances of at least two more wins than you think.

And if AP and Harvin have any concerns in that regard, I’m sure they can talk to James Lofton about when it’s time to get out.
