When the Chiefs selected defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey with the fifth overall pick of the 2008 draft, the hope was that he’d become a dominant force on their defensive line.
That never really came to fruition as Dorsey developed into a capable starter who never really changed games or lived up to that lofty draft status. It doesn’t look like he’ll be getting another opportunity to change that summary of his career in Kansas City. Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports that the Chiefs will place Dorsey on injured reserve Monday because of the calf injury he suffered against the Chargers in Week Nine.
It’s a move that doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The Chiefs signed Shaun Smith last week, an indication that they knew they’d need some healthy bodies on the line in the second half of the season. Dorsey had previously missed several games this year because of a knee injury.
That ends Dorsey’s season, obviously, and it likely ends his time with the Chiefs. Dorsey will be a free agent this offseason and it looks like the Chiefs are heading toward an offseason of tremendous change after a season of tremendous disappointment. If Dorsey’s career has a next chapter, it’s almost certainly going to come in a different uniform.
The Chiefs will promote defensive back Neiko Thorpe from the practice squad to take Dorsey’s place on the roster.
