Lions claim cornerback Pat Lee, cut Alphonso Smith

Pat Lee AP

As the Lions continue to play musical chairs in the secondary, they’ve made yet another move at cornerback.

Pat Lee, who started seven games at cornerback for the Raiders this year but was surprisingly cut on Saturday, has been claimed off waivers by the Lions. To make room on the roster for Lee, Detroit has waived cornerback Alphonso Smith.

The Lions have been plagued by injuries in the secondary this season, so being able to acquire a cornerback who was a starter for most of this season has to be welcome news in Detroit. The move presumably means the Lions are no longer in the hunt for former Chiefs cornerback Stanford Routt, who is a free agent after he cleared waivers last week.

Detroit is also expected to get cornerback Drayton Florence back soon after he has spent the last eight weeks on injured reserve with the return designation.

It is quite telling that they swooped on Lee with Routt still sitting around.

Big Reg should not have cut Lee with the problems the RAIDERS had against Flacco on Sunday as evidence.

don’t ask me why the raiders cut lee. Should have cut giordano, and moved huff back to safety, hey but what do I know. (except watching Giordano and Huff making Flacco look like a hall of fame qb yesterday)

Looking for two year old Packers intel. Smart move Lions!

Rout is a #1…maybe #2 corner. Lions only go after nickel corners and put them in starter roles. They’re cheap like that. Chris Houston, Alphonso Smith, Jacob Lacey…all nickel corners before they came to Detroit.

Alphonso did make a nice play to advance a punt that the Vikes muffed last week. He’s the least coached player but showed more offensive head’s up than our typical returners. It wasn’t worth a lot but it was a nice break from the norm, hopefully that inspires somebody else to get creative to turn our return units into offensive opportunists.

I’m sure its just a coincidence they picked up the former Packer Lee six days before they play Green Bay. Lions staff are desperately trying to save their season.

Why the Raiders would cut Pat Lee and keep OL Willie Smith, or DB Matt Giardano is beyond me. Giardano reminds my of a Tecmo Bowl DB. He’s quickly approaching the Stu Schweigert record for number of times he appears on the opposing team’s high light reel. He can infrequently manage to be close enough to make a play, he just NEVER makes one. I just can’t watch it anymore…

    smh

Apparently you guys weren’t watching Pat Lee in the Bucs game. It was not a pretty sight.

That said, the Raiders defense isn’t that good in the first place so having Lee would not have helped much.

did i just see some idiot claim routt is a #1 or #2 cb? oh is that why two teams cut him after giving him a substantial amount of gauranteed money and still is available yet nobody is knocking down his door …. Matt Millen is that you?

Detroit will be alright at corner when Drayton Florence comes back, he’s a good cover corner that is very good in run support. Wish Buffalo would have cut Aaron Williams instead of Flo.

At least Alf leaves all of his places of employment on good terms. They always waive goodbye.

I wish the Lions would draft a worth while cornerback instead of all of these late round bums, and waiver claim scrubs…. Smh… This whole defense is in trouble, under productive d line… Decent at best linebackers, and with Delmas out and Houston possibly hurt, our secondary is Division 2 at best…

Looked to me on Sunday that the Lions LBs and safeties were the weak links, not the CBs.
