Chan Gailey notes rookie quarterbacks are playing well

Being a reporter requires a finely tuned ear, so as to detect subtle clues about a team’s intentions.

Take for instance last week, when Bills general manager Buddy Nix said he wanted to draft a quarterback this coming offseason.

And then today, Bill coach Chan Gailey, in discussing rookie quarterbacks, said “you draft them to play them now.”

Could be wrong, but it’s almost like the Bills are thinking about changing gears.

“You don’t draft them to let them sit,” Gailey said, via Tim Graham of the Buffalo News. “There’s a few people that are doing that, but for the most part you’re drafting those guys to play.

“They’re thrown in there, and they’re responding extremely well right now.”

The Bills, when picking third in 2011, would have certainly taken Cam Newton had he fallen past Carolina and Denver. Last April, picking 10th, the top three quarterbacks were already off the board before they had a chance.

Granted, Gailey was talking about the fact his team plays four rookie starters in the next six weeks (Ryan Tannehill twice, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson), but it’s hardly a coincidence the Bills are seeing all these kids playing well, and taking notes.
