On Ray Edwards, Falcons simply decided to go with other players

The abrupt decision of the Atlanta Falcons to release defensive end Ray Edwards has sparked speculation that something happened to prompt the decision.

Per a league source, it was simply a numbers game.

Edwards no longer was a starter.  The source says that the Falcons opted to go with other players — especially since younger players are more suited to playing special teams.

The Falcons will be on the hook for Edwards’ remaining base salary of $1.23 million if no one claims his contract on waivers.  Given the importance of rushing the passer, it wouldn’t be a complete shock if someone does.

Kroy Biermann has been a better pash rusher and player for the Falcons even before Edwards got signed.

Ray Edwards was the beneficiary of having Jared Allen being double teamed and the Williams brothers plugging the middle. Lesson learned for the Falcons.

Welcome back to minnesota, ray. We reset the Sack Tracker for you.

Does anyone know if he ever reached his goal of setting the single-season sack record?

He only has 3.5 sacks in his last 25 games, and he has zero sacks this season. Any second-string DE could produce those numbers at a far lower salary and with the ability to produce on special teams. He’s a shell of his former self and I doubt anyone claims him.

If someone is looking for a passer they won’t be looking for Ray Edwards.

Make fun of him all you want, but I’d rather have players who set lofty goals than those who are just along for the ride. Edwards would be our 3rd best DE if we signed him. I say we go for it.

@ a reduced salary, some team may want him

He may have to sit in order to get his coin and hope for an oppty next season.

Kind of a bummer to get cut from a 1 loss team

His “former self” was putting up second string levels in sacks for the Vikings – the guy got paid for one decent season’s worth of work when he had one of the best pass rushers in the game on the other side of him.

Stop pretending to be a Viking fan. Anyone who thinks Ray Edwards is better than Everson Griffen is just a troll trying to stir up trouble.

Don’t feel too bad for him, he didn’t do anything to make himself a keeper.

There’s a reason Minnesota let this guy walk, people. And there’s a reason their fans didn’t even care. Good player, but never great and only a fool would pay him that much money.

If he clears waivers, you pay him the league minimum. You think he’s not better than everson griffen or d’aundre reed?

Everson has more sacks on spot duty the Edwards did starting?!… I was ok when we let him walk ..everyone but the Falcons knew he was benefiting from Williams wall & J.Allen an would disappear on a line that wasn’t as strong … Plus he ran his MOUTH!.. To much!!
