Jammal Brown practices, wants to play this year

The Redskins have two weeks to make a decision on whether to activate right tackle Jammal Brown.

But while he said he was encouraged by his first practice after hip surgery, he also sounds unsure if he’s going to be ready in time.

I feel a lot looser, could move a lot more,” Brown said, via Mike Jones of the Washington Post. “I’ll know better after a week or so, how it feels. But I feel good. It was a great day for me.”

Brown missed the entire 2009 season after surgery for a torn labrum in his left hip, and has been bothered by problems there ever since. His surgery was to repair a torn ligament, and he’s been on the physically unable to perform list ever since. Monday was his first practice, and they reported no setbacks or conditioning problems. Now it’s a matter of getting back into a football groove.

“As soon as possible … The Redskins are trying to be cautious, but I hope they’re not too cautious,” Brown said. “I want to get out there as soon as possible. Help my team.”

“It’s a little bit of discomfort because of the surgery feeling, that type of soreness. But in due time, that should go away. Breathing, I feel good. It’s more of the hip conditioning. It gets a little tiring some times, and I can’t get my kick step back as far, but that’s something I’ll work on. . . . I’m lucky to be in this situation with this injury that coaches didn’t stop believing in me.”

Brown’s an upgrade if he’s well, but he hasn’t proven to be able to stay that way, so the next two weeks will be significant for them and him long-term.

Doesn’t matter, at this point he’s hardly an improvement over Turnstile Polumbus and neither of them will be the starting RT next year.
