Redskins coach Mike Shanahan caused an uproar a couple of weeks ago when he said that the team would be shifting into evaluation mode for the rest of the season.

That’s not where quarterback Robert Griffin III’s head is at, however. Griffin said Wednesday that the postseason remains the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for this season.

“I think the playoffs are a realistic goal for us,” Griffin said, via Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan.

A win this weekend would leave them two games back of the Giants with one game left between the teams and the Redskins have five games left against NFC East teams overall, so it is definitely a realistic scenario. That doesn’t mean it’s likely, not with the way the Redskins defense has been performing this season, but it wouldn’t be the craziest thing to ever happen in the NFL.

Griffin returns from the bye week with his ribs feeling totally fine and with a new role on the team. The Redskins voted for some new captains after the bye and Griffin will serve in the role for the rest of the season. It’s the first time Shanahan can remember having a rookie voted the captain of a team he’s coached, which speaks to how much regard his teammates have for him.

His first message as captain is that the playoffs remain on the radar screen. We’ll find out if everyone rallies to his cause against Philly this weekend because any playoff hopes will be just about extinguished with a loss.
