The Falcons could be closer to getting one of their best defensive players back on the field, and keeping one of their best offensive guys there.

Both linebacker Sean Weatherspoon and wide receiver Julio Jones were held out of practice Thursday, but coach Mike Smith told the team’s official website he thinks they’re making progress, and should be game-time decisions.

These guys are so close and moving in the right direction that we’ll make a determination as late as we possibly can,” Smith said. “We can do it as late as we possibly can. They’re working hard to get back and we’re hoping that they’ll continue to progress [Friday], Saturday and Sunday morning.”

Smith said he doesn’t hold fast to the idea that players who don’t practice can’t play. Weatherspoon has missed the last two games, while Jones left last week’s loss to the Saints but returned to finish the game.
