APThe Bills defense was supposed to be this good all year.
They just waited until November to show it.
The Bills finally locked someone down, holding the Dolphins to 184 net yards in a 19-14 win.
“That’s how it’s supposed to be week in and week out,” defensive end Mario Williams said, bia Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News. “As long as we go out and play fundamental football, gap sound football, that’ll be the result.
“It was gap football. Playing our assignments and being where we’re supposed to be.”
Of that paltry total of Dolphins yards, only 60 came on the ground, against a Bills rush defense that was worst in the league entering the game. But the Bills also did it with pass defense, making Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill look very much like a rookie, picking him off twice in the last two minutes.
“It feels good to put four quarters together,” Bills safety George Wilson said. “We talked about it at halftime. Anybody can do it for 30 minutes. We had to go out and take this victory.”
The biggest key was taking away Reggie Bush, who had 203 yards on them last December, but only 20 Thursday, including a whopping 0 yards on his first seven carries.
“We knew he was the key to their offense,” Wilson said. “If we allowed him to have success on first down running the ball, then that was gonna give them more opportunities in their play-action game and in their boots and nakeds, getting Tannehill on the perimeter. He’s very accurate throwing on the move. By nullifying their run game, we made them one-dimensional for the most part.”
And when that one dimension wasn’t working either, it allowed a defense that has been pummeled all year to finally have a good night.
