Alex Smith practicing again today, looking likely to play

49ers Harbaugh Football AP

Alex Smith is practicing in a black “non-contact” jersey today, which doesn’t make his return for Monday’s game a certainty, but does give a strong hint the 49ers will activate him.

Smith has been limited all week, but his involvement in practice suggests he’s made positive steps, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

“Again, it’s in the doctor’s hands and they’ll evaluate him as the week goes,” coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday. “There seems to be some progress.”

Harbaugh said backup Colin Kaepernick was getting “a little bit more work than normal” in case he has to play.

The Bears have already ruled quarterback Jay Cutler out, meaning Jason Campbell will start against the 49ers.

He won’t be able to wear the black jersey come Monday night.

Campbell’s a real quarterback, not just a clipboard holder. Whoever plays for SF this is going to be a good game.
